Ovos moles is the specialty of Aveiro - so special it has a PGI status, similar to the designation for cheeses, olive oils and wines! It's a confectionery made with orange-colored egg yolks and sugar, in a thin wafer shell (the story has it that the sweet was invented by a nun who hid it in the dough used to make the host for Holy Communion). The sweets are usually shaped like a shell, a wine barrel, or a sardine, in keeping with Aveiro's seafaring history.
While you can see this sweet on every corner, Confectionery Peixinho is the oldest of local confectionery, making this delicacy since 1856. It's on a side street near the bridge, and has lots of goodies besides ovos moles. read more
