Anchorage II

I don't know who would be more qualified to write a review at the Anchorage II than myself. We…read morehave been coming down to the Anchorage for 30 years. We missed a few years in there but our first stay was in 1983. Its now 2013 and we just returned from there again. Let me start with location. Its pretty much in the middle of Myrtle and North Myrtle in the "Ocean Forest" area of Myrtle Beach. You are hidden away from all the chaos Myrtle Beach. Very little traffic and close to everything. The beach is just a walk across the street. The Anchorage has a private beach access with 2 large gazebos. The atmosphere is VERY family oriented. Like i said before, my family has been coming down since i was 6 years old. I now bring my two children down every year. The layout of the condos is in the shape of a U and the pool is in the center. One thing that i find as a major bonus is that there is a lot of grassy areas to play Frisbee or whatever. Parking is never a problem and there are 2 elevators as well as wheelchair accessible ramps. There is about 50-60 units so there isn't a ton of people and some of those units are private and never rented out. The landscaping is beautiful and kept up very well. There is free wireless internet available everywhere, including the pool. The interior of the condos are excellent. Each one is privately owned and has its own decorating style. we have stayed in several different units over the years. The first two floors are 2 bedroom units with 2 full baths. The third floor has 3 bedroom / 2 Bath condos (with a 4th floor loft bedroom with its own balcony). The 3rd bedroom is like a loft. It has half walls so you can look down into the dining area (not very private). Each unit has the standard kitchen, dining area, washer/dryer, dishwasher, and living area with TV (I think most have updated LCD TV mounted on the wall). I believe most of the units have a sofa which folds out into an extra bed. The condo we stayed at had 4 LCD TVs in the family room and bedrooms. One thing to remember, you need to bring dish washing soap, toilet paper, laundry detergent, etc. Its just like moving into an apartment for a week. There's isn't a restaurant or bar located on the premises, BUT in the Forest Dunes resort (a 60 second walk away) next door has a little place to relax (they even have trivia on Thursday evenings which my family found quite fun). We have walked over there for lunch in the past and the food was pretty decent, plus they have a full bar. Lastly, the price for this condos is excellent compared to what other places charge. we have strayed from the anchorage a few times in the past and nothing in the area compares to this place. Oh, one more thing. Again this depends on the owners of the condo, but most condos have an outside locker where the owners put their own beach chairs and floatation devices (body boards, noodles, skim boards, etc) for guests to use at the beach or pool. Some units we've stayed in had their own huge beach umbrellas to use. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this place. I'll answer them the best I can.

I'm not going to say which condo we stayed in cause I don't want ya'll to rent the heck out of it…read more It was really updated and had a nice view off the deck. The one and only complaint is that there were other guests that allowed their children to run up and down the outside corridors well past midnight yelling. If I come back it won't be during Passover, we were told by some of the condo owners the behavior is typical during the holiday.

First off, for the price of this joint, pool towels should be provided other than having to scan your room key to get them out of a bin (only one bin at one end, annoying) and claiming a "chip" is inside each towel or you will be charged. Okaay, like anyone is gonna steal those? Doubt it and A 'chip'?? Alrighty, still trying to figure that one out. Some security guy rolled up one night asking us to turn music down in the hot tub at 9:45 pm, when we actually had NO music at All because someone had complained about loud music (btw, hot tubs and pools close at 11 pm), He then apologized twice, and said he didn't hear any music either. Did we check into a beach resort or a retirement community here??

I recently stayed at Island Vista Resort in Myrtle Beach for a family reunion, and what should have…read morebeen a wonderful experience with loved ones turned into one of the most disappointing hotel stays I have encountered. As a Hilton vacation owner who frequently travels, I understand hospitality standards and recognize that every property operates differently. However, professionalism, honesty, respect, and compassion should never be optional. Customer service was disappointing from the beginning. My interactions with Jan and Misty left me feeling unwelcome and dismissed. I fully understand that check-in is at 4:00 p.m. and that early check-in is based on availability. My issue was never simply being unable to check in early; it was the attitude, lack of flexibility, and manner in which our concerns were handled. We were told that because our reservation was coordinated through Kathy for our family group, certain changes could not be made. While I understand group reservations may have specific procedures, that should not prevent hotel employees from providing helpful explanations, exploring available options, or treating guests respectfully. A group reservation does not eliminate the hotel's responsibility to the individual guests staying on its property. What I found especially inappropriate was Jan's comment asking us not to leave a bad review because it could affect their ability to allow future guests to check in early. Ironically, we were not even accommodated with an early check-in. Guests should never feel discouraged from providing honest feedback. Even more disturbing, we later learned that our interaction had reportedly been described as us creating an issue. That characterization was inaccurate from my perspective. There is a difference between a customer respectfully expressing dissatisfaction and a customer causing a disturbance. Accountability should never be replaced with a narrative that places blame on the guest. However, the most disappointing part of our stay occurred on the morning of October 10, when a fire-related incident required guests to evacuate the building. Our family, along with other guests, stood outside in the rain for more than an hour. Among us was a 92-year-old family member who became lightheaded and dehydrated. While I absolutely understand and support emergency evacuation procedures, I was deeply disappointed by what I perceived as a lack of concern, compassion, and assistance for elderly and vulnerable guests. An emergency may be beyond management's control, but the response to that emergency is where true hospitality and leadership are demonstrated. Checking on elderly guests, communicating clearly, identifying those who need additional assistance, and showing basic human compassion should be priorities. I expected more, particularly at a resort hosting so many older guests that weekend. The property itself is decent, but its age is noticeable. At approximately 20 years old, Island Vista would benefit from renovations, more consistent housekeeping, and greater attention to the overall guest experience. I also questioned the repeated statements that rooms were unavailable when numerous rooms appeared unoccupied. I recognize that an empty room is not necessarily ready for occupancy, but transparent communication would have gone a long way. What troubles me most is that none of my concerns required luxury accommodations or extraordinary treatment. I was simply expecting basic customer service, truthful communication, reasonable professionalism, and compassion for a 92-year-old guest during an unexpected emergency. A resort's reputation is not built solely on its oceanfront location, amenities, or years in business. It is built on how people are treated, particularly when something goes wrong. Employees are the face of the business, and leadership is responsible for establishing and maintaining those standards. I wanted to support this property and enjoy our family reunion. Instead, I left feeling disappointed, disrespected, and concerned about the treatment of elderly guests. My recommendation to Island Vista management and ownership is simple: invest in your property, retrain employees where necessary, improve housekeeping, establish stronger emergency guest-assistance procedures, and remember that hospitality begins with people. I would not return or recommend this resort based on my experience. A guest may forget an outdated room, but they will remember how they were treated--especially when compassion mattered most.
