While I was in Padova, I was keen to visit the university as it is an institution that played an…read moreimmense role in the evolution of modern medicine (it was where modern medicine actually flourished!). So, there are tours of the university (in English, Spanish or Italian) for only 10euro (though you can get a discount if you're a student), and the tours are only on certain days, at certain times (usually in the morning around 930am, 1130am, or evening 330pm, 430pm. Best to clarify by checking their website for more info!) We went in the evening after our lunch! If you're fascinated by history (there's so much you could learn from visiting this university!) and medicine (which I am because it's gruesome and creepy like crazy) then this is really something you'd be into! This one of the oldest universities in the Western world (2nd after University of Bologna in Italy), was opened as a law and theology school which then grew into an institution for medicine, astronomy, philosophy in the 15th century. It housed intellects such as Galileo, who was in fact, a renown educator of world leaders at the time! People came from across the globe to attend his classes! Also, this university was the birthplace of human anatomy! But we'll get to that later. On the tour itself, you'd be taken around the most important spaces such as the main hall where law classes were conducted (and which also has beautiful al fresco on the ceiling and plaques of past students), the medical classroom and also the medical theatre. Now to me, the medical theatre is one of the best parts of the tour! Why? Because dissections of human bodies were illegal at the time. People would make theories about medicine without actually cutting up and studying human bodies from the inside! So, the doctors at the time would steal bodies from graveyards to cut them up and research about human anatomy ... in the middle of the night ... with many students watching ... in silence ... and in darkness with only candles lighting up the theatre. It's absolutely amazing and creepy as hell knowing these facts! You get to see the theatre from where the doctors use to stand and cut up bodies! Which was even more amazing! Hence, the birthplace of human anatomy! :-) Anyway, I'd definitely recommend visiting the university! It's filled with so much history! And it's also very beautiful.
