We stopped at this bridge spanning the Salmon River after visiting Day Pond State Park and did not realize there was a trail that connected the two. Though the river is named after the Atlantic salmon that once migrated up the river to spawn, none have been since 1806. read more

I fully "support" covered bridges! I love them and whenever I'm traveling, hubby and I seek them out! The rich history behind these practical and rustic structures begs one to pause and marvel at the construction and the sensibleness of their design. The roof protected the lumber from wear and tear. And the barn-like features made horses more comfortable to travel through. They were also known as "kissing" bridges because young sweethearts would hide in them and sneak a smooch! This bridge was gorgeous and I appreciated that you could walk through it and it's surrounding grounds. Located in Colchester and over the Salmon River, there's a plaque describing the details of this charming destination. There's a little bench to sit, watch the river, surround yourself with nature and perhaps contemplate the meaning of life! We also visited the Johnsonville covered bridge in Haddam over the Moodus River, which was a small covered bridge with no access for adventure seekers, so we had to take photos from the road. It's a little off the beaten path. The other bridge was explored was called the Harold Woronick covered bridge in Wallingford and it was a challenge to find, but we did it. It's off a small private road, so we were quick to pop in, take a gander and be on our way! We loved visiting these bridges and I think you will too! The original Comstock Covered Bridge could be the oldest covered bridge in CT, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It's a fine structure with the woodwork all open on the inside. The Historical Society has all the info: https://chathamhistoricalct.org/comstock/ It is located on the Salmon River, a wee bit north of the border with Colchester, making its location in the Town of East Hampton. Certainly worth the 5-15 minute stop off Rt 16 to stretch you legs. You may even get a classic photo of an angler. read more

Bridges salmon and Richard R The Comstock Covered Bridge is one of only three covered bridges in the state of CT. It was originally built in the 1840's and the main span is a common Howe Truss construction. It served as the primary way across the Salmon River until a concrete bridge was built in the 1930s. Not a whole lot of the original bridge is left. A truck crashed through the bridge around 1930 and the bridge had to be rebuilt. And in the 1970s the venerable bridge was extensively restored and cleaned up. Looks new and real pretty now. The main span of the bridge is about eighty feet and it's about twelve feet wide. No vehiclular traffic goes over the bridge anymore but it's fun to walk across it. The Salmon River below the bridge frequently has zillions of fishermen when the water level is high enough and a large parking lot is conveniently placed close by. Not one of the largest or most impressive covered bridges but it's still pretty cool. It's free, nice and a great picece of Connecticut history if you happen to be in the area.
