I fully "support" covered bridges! I love them and whenever I'm traveling, hubby and I seek them out! The rich history behind these practical and rustic structures begs one to pause and marvel at the construction and the sensibleness of their design. The roof protected the lumber from wear and tear. And the barn-like features made horses more comfortable to travel through. They were also known as "kissing" bridges because young sweethearts would hide in them and sneak a smooch!
This bridge was gorgeous and I appreciated that you could walk through it and it's surrounding grounds. Located in Colchester and over the Salmon River, there's a plaque describing the details of this charming destination. There's a little bench to sit, watch the river, surround yourself with nature and perhaps contemplate the meaning of life!
We also visited the Johnsonville covered bridge in Haddam over the Moodus River, which was a small covered bridge with no access for adventure seekers, so we had to take photos from the road. It's a little off the beaten path. The other bridge was explored was called the Harold Woronick covered bridge in Wallingford and it was a challenge to find, but we did it. It's off a small private road, so we were quick to pop in, take a gander and be on our way!
We loved visiting these bridges and I think you will too! Now I'm in the mood to watch "The Bridges of Madison County"! read more
