Before chucking out your old PC or peripherals and taking them to the Council recycling centre, think whether someone less fortunate than you might be able to benefit from them.
That's where Computer Aid International comes in. They are a registered charity and NGO that decommission, refurbish and then donate computers and peripherals for re-use in schools and community organisations in the developing world. Decommissioning comes with a guarantee on liability.
They collect from businesses, institutions, government and individuals. Recognising that it can be difficult for individuals to donate computers, they try to make it as easy as they can. You can take kit to their depot yourself for free (ring ahead), or post it via a special deal with Parcel2Go (part of DHL) for under £10 per parcel from anywhere in the UK.
Their clear and helpful website explains what they do, what equipment they accept and how to donate. You can call their helpful staff if anything is not clear. I've used them twice and they've been very good. read more
