Compass is made up of four distinct Wisconsin granite stones and tubes of mirror-polished stainless steel. It is 12 feet high by 10 feet wide and 3 feet deep, standing in the center of the pathway that is apparently known as the East Ogden Stairs. It consists of four blocks of Wisconsin granite, one at each of the four points of north, east, south, and west. They are joined by highly polished stainless steel tubes to form the shape of a circle or "compass".
The artist is Jon Barlow Hudson and he signed the sculpture in 2005 when it was installed. He was born in Montana in 1945.
Hudson also created Sentinels that is downhill from here in the circle of the ramp descending from the bridge.
