The service is friendly, fast, and attentive. The ambiance was surprisingly quiet given the number of people and its well kept and clean inside. The food was very good! I had the Vallarta Burrito after almost ordering the fajitas, and I don't think I could have been wrong either way. The chips and salsa they start you with are generous, but the salsa is a little sweet for my taste buds. I prefer heat to my salsa but this was as mild as it gets. Gets a heads up for others. I stopped by here a couple of Sundays ago with my wife for lunch. We were driving through Meadville at around lunchtime whenever I decided that we should stop at Compadres. You see, I went to school at Allegheny and had some fond memories of the food. While it isn't located in the same location, the food is certainly the same and I would say that the location in the old ponderosa is even more convenient. Whenever we arrived at the restaurant we were immediately greeted by a hostess and taken to a booth. The decor here still sort of reminds of the ponderosa that used to be here as it feels like old west but it wasn't so out of place in a Mexican restaurant. After we were seated we were given complimentary chips and salsa. Neither the chips nor salsa are anything special but they are that special word, free. For lunch on this day I found one of the dishes that I remember ordering from my college days, the burritos aztecas, and decided to order it again. The menu describes it as three burritos (one ground beef, one cheese, one chicken) topped with 3 of their homemade sauces. Whenever it comes to the table it ends up looking like a Mexican flag because the sauces are a green salsa, a red salsa and a white cheese sauce. Like I remembered all of the burritos tasted good and were enhanced by the sauces. Sauce wise I liked the green one the best and protein wise I liked the chicken the best. It came with a giant plate filled with sides of refried beans, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream and rice. Without this plate I don't think it would have been enough food but with it there was definitely enough. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I enjoyed my walk down memory lane by coming here and thought that the food was still pretty good too. read more

I am picky about Mex food ( I am Texan) especially when its $45 for lunch. I asked for street tacos .....not good-$17.99 for sweet red onion ( mex food uses white onion for heat) white corn tortillas almost crunchy ( should be soft thicker yellow corn ) , asked for extra lime got 2 slices ( and did not see - very nice but not available -waitress again til ticket time) very bland almost weird red coated chicken.....beans were super bland , rice? more so .....the sliced avocado ( one for $4.69) was perfect .....salsa is too sweet , chips not salted, other person got a taco salad (sans beans) which was pretty small and not fully filled ...( $14.99) they also charged $3.69 for sweet tea which was never refilled.....I had planned to get a to go order for family but opted out after this experience .....overpriced and bland .....and went through me way to quickly! Staff is very nice. Food is okay. They like to slather everything in "signature queso" sauce. I prefer real cheese. The grilled nachos are very tasty. I wish they had fresh pico de Gallo, real Mexican cheeses, and they spent a bit more time preparing the dishes. Lackluster is an understatement. We stopped here on a whim to give it a shot and were pretty disappointed. When we sat down we were given one menu. When I asked for another, I was told this is "restaurant policy". Weird, but no big deal. Our order was incredibly simple- I ordered a deluxe burrito dinner and my wife ordered one chicken taco and one ground beef taco. Our waiter did not write anything down. Easy, right? Not as such; though the order came quickly, 1/3rd of it was wrong (she ended up getting two ground beef tacos). I asked for a Tecate beer and when I was told they didn't carry it, I asked for Mexican alternatives. The waiter told me two other kinds that I hadn't heard of and I asked him to bring either one of those so I could try something new. He ended up bringing a Corona which was somehow $5 for a bottle. Hardly something new and not either of the choices he presented to me. This guy was clearly on autopilot. Zero passion for his work (and it was not busy- only one other family eating in the establishment). Unfortunately, I would not recommend Compadres for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. For starters, the food came out so fast that it is obviously all frozen, however everything tasted pretty good. I ordered a chicken chimichanga, and it was pretty tasty. They give you free chips and salsa with your meal, and they have happy hour from 7-9. I'd come back here again if I was really craving Mexican food, but this probably won't be a go to place for me. Giving one star for fast service. The only people that are less happy than you will be to be at this restaurant are the staff. Food (and 'courses') comes so fast you couldn't enjoy it, as if that were possible. Salsa has consistency and taste of watered down marinara. Food was frozen type mush. Beans were congealed prison-type cafeteria slop. Restaurant was dirty, laminated menus sticky, booth bench seat cushions cracked wide open. Went on a Saturday night - we were the only ones there at 8:50pm and it closed at 10pm. I am up writing this at 2am - awake because of multiple bouts of explosive diarrhea and heartburn. Prices are way too high, service sucks ass. They force their own tip onto the bill. I am a former sever and usually tip 25% but when sever is this bad they don't deserve anything mor than 15 and they force 20-25 on a two person bill. They only tell you about menu allergies after food is out, and then don't remove it from the bill, and and the food got out cold. I'm from the west coast and know good Mexican food. Mt wife and I have been to Compadres three times, because I'm a firm believer in the three strikes and your out line. Well they had their third strike last Tuesday. We stopped in to share Nacho's and were served the poorest excuse for Nacho's I have ever seen. I'm beginning to wonder if anyone from Compadres has ever seen a Mexican. I know they don't know how to cook like one. Save your money and go to ANY other Mexican place and give they a try. I've been here probably a half dozen times over the past few years since they moved to this location, which was previously a Ponderosa. I had visited the old location even more times than this one. This is typical Gringo-style Mexican fare served very quickly, and is just a half-step above fast food. It's certainly not very authentic, nor is it gourmet in any way. Today for dinner with friends, we all took advantage of the "Taco Tuesday" special, which is three tacos for three dollars. I had hard tacos with beef, and my friends had soft tacos with beans (They are vegetarians). I also had a Chile Relleno with my tacos. The tacos were fine, served with beef, lettuce and cheese, in a hard corn shell. My Chile Relleno was a little bit different, as it tasted like it was covered in nacho cheese, which is fine, but I never remembered having it that way before. Overall, this is a good place for a decent, inexpensive, and quick meal. It is what it is . . . mediocre, which by the way is the same word in both Spanish and English. read more

Zero stars!! Stuck in town for work. Had to eat somewhere. The food was actually good. My coworker and I had a different dishes. I had the pollo ranchero. Yummy. Problem was that the next day we both got very sick. Very nauseous and explosive diarrhea. He was worse than me due to eating his leftovers later in the evening. We talked to some of the locals we are working with up here in Meadville and learned that they have had similar gastric distress after eating there. Best enchiladas. We had the enchilada supreme which has steak, chicken and shrimp. It is a very large portion with rice and beans included or they will accommodate special requests for any changes.
