I just met with Rachel Long today to discuss plans for my new logo and paper trail branding for my business, Nancy Rothstein Photography. (shameless plug...wait for it....www.nancyrothstein.com) I was referred to Rachel by fabulous Bay Area and beyond photographers Gene Higa and Ann Hamilton. Based on the awesome logos and other design work she did for them, I was very excited at the prospect of hiring her to do some work for me. Rachel doesn't have a website, and frankly, she doesn't need one. The quality of the samples of her work that I have seen in addition to the samples she sent me was excellent. Not only is she a fantastic designer, she successfully orchestrates her designs using a wide variety of styles to suit many different needs. I am eagerly awaiting the first round of comps for my new logo...I'll keep you posted. In the mean time, I give her five stars for all the work I have seen so far, and, did I mention she is totally cool with a down-to-earth personality and a great sense of humor? She's not that graphic designer who's going to nickel-and-dime you to death every time you make an edit! If you want design work to help you stand out in the crowd, give Rachel a call. You won't be disappointed!

THIS PAPER IS NOW CALLED THE SANTA CRUZ WEEKLY…read more I love this 'little' paper. It's a sweet lil' publication for anyone living in or visiting Santa Cruz County. It's at almost any coffee shop... It's a good place to find insightful writing about news, culture and events in and around Santa Cruz County. I was curious about what happened to the Metro... so I investigated. This is from the website: "Formerly known as Metro Santa Cruz, the new Santa Cruz Weekly takes a fresh look at the community with an attractive new format launched May 6, 2009. Santa Cruz Weekly's home page at http://SantaCruzWeekly... is part of a Bay Area-wide network of news and events information sites that publishes smart, original content by leading local writers and critics not found elsewhere." It's cool because there are a bunch of other Metro Newspapers and Boulevards sites, like the San Francisco Entertainment Calendar, San Francisco Visitor Information, San Jose/Silicon Valley Clubs, Music & Events, San Jose Local Business Directory & Events Information, Los Gatos News, Los Gatos Dining & Hotels, Scotts Valley, California Carmel, California Hotels, Restaurants & Visitor Information, Boulevards City Guides... ... so they're really hooked in to what's going on the the SF bay Area and Monterrey bay area! My issue with this rag is it delivers thousands of unwanted copies without permission. This…read moreegregious act pollutes our environment in so many ways. First, paper in landfills does not degrade well. 2nd would be all the resources wasted printing something that is not read or used. 3rd would be the use of their "delivery" numbers to infulence advertisers to purchase ads. And lastly is the frustration of having to throw 2 copies away every time they are delivered. I do not read this paper ever. It goes straight to the bin, hopefully to be recycled, but probably not due to ink and paper used. Bulk mailing is such an issue that my local post office took out all their recycling bins, as they would overflow everyday. Bulk mailing was never intended to provide "free" subscribers to a paper to bulk up their distribution numbers. It is a deplorabel waste of resources, time and energy.

I do not recommend the Press Banner - this was my experience with them regarding a name change…read morepublication. I contacted the Banner to have my name change published and gave them all required credit card and documental information. Two weeks later, I discoverd that my credit card had not been charged and that the Banner had never run my time sensitive publication. I contacted the Banner and was informed that my name change would publish in time for my court date which was now 4 weeks away. I was also ensured that a hard copy of the newspaper with the add publication would be mailed to my home address for my reference. The hard copy was never mailed my way, the Banner never sent Proof of Publication to the court house by my court date, a copy of the Proof of Publication was never emailed to me before my court date, my phone calls were never returned. I had no way of knowing if my name had actually been published. I traveled to Scotts Valley to locate a copy of the paper and discovered, at that point, that they had indeed published my name change. I followed up with the Banner after my court date had passed to discuss my experience with having a name change published with their paper. I was told they were a small paper, but could refund me partially and resend a copy of the Proof of Publication email my way. The woman in charge of running the name change publication, ensured that it had been sent my way on time and acknowledged that she had listened to my messages, specifically remembering me as the woman "freaking out". I never did receive that refund or the Proof of Publication email. Skip this experience, take your business to another paper. To add, I just received an $80 bill from the Press Banner in the mail. They were paid in full last month before the publication went out. I had to send a copy of my credit card statement and emails proving I paid in full to their accounting department. I couldn't be more dissatisfied with their lack of attention throughout this entire process.

I had pixelated images in my ad after being assured that it was only the PDF proof that looked pixelated and it wouldn't be in my final ad. They misspelled the name of my business twice ( 2 different ways!) and my phone number had only 6 digits. I am the one who found the errors! The fact that it made it through their graphic department is astounding. When trying to resolve the issue they resorted to making remarks that were unfounded, and inflammatory. I will never deal with them again. Fellow business owners I say put your advertising dollars elsewhere!

I only visit Santa Cruz twice a year, max, but I've actually listened to KZSC 88.1 more on my…read moredrives down the 101 near the towns of Gonzales and Soledad than I have when driving around Monterey Bay. Normally at that point of the drive, it's early afternoon on Saturday or Sunday, so I often hear the same DJs or at least the same shows that have been hosted by different DJs--college students, I assume. The music can be good, bad, or totally random, especially how the songs are juxtaposed. That's the beauty of true college radio, and I don't begrudge them their poor taste or lack of knowledge of seminal bands from the '80s and '90s--and yes, I know that they were born in the 2000s, but I was born in the late '70s and I still knew from a young age who Elvis, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and many of the Motown artists were. What does bother me about this station--and something ugly about true college radio--is how much dead air there is. It's not just too much time between songs or occasionally hearing hot-mic incidents; it's a more regular thing, and I've heard the same DJs apologize for the same issue over and over. Again, I get it that these are (mostly) college kids who are learning a skill, but they should be better, which leads me to believe there's very little to no engineering help for the DJs. There's also too much advertising, but I can't single KZSC out for that, and some of the hyper-local ads are funny. I'm glad it's my audio companion for at least part of my regular trips to SoCal, but it could be better. And they need more shows devoted to music.
