Importing them myself from The Netherlands would have cost me a lot. A.R.T. Foods has got decent prices and their product is 'van Dobbe' - which in Holland are regarded as the best on the market! The bitterballen are 54 in a box and the kroketten are 24. This company is usually not delivering to Scotland, but for a negotiated delivery price (up to 10 boxes) they were willing to deliver. Payment was done via Bank Transfer and a couple of days later I received the good. Well packaged in freezer polystyrene. I dealt with the founders and owners of the business directly. I recommend them to anyone thinking of getting those particular Dutch treats. They have a limited product offering, but they wouldn't need much besides the 'bitter garnituur'

Seeing as they are two of my passions in life (and things I have the strongest opinions on) I had to take a look. This place is located in Shrewsbury's market hall, an otherwise standard small-town market place with the usual butchers / veg stalls and dated canvas roofs. I must've circled the whole place a couple of times before I found it as it's hidden in a corner but what a bright, colourful corner it is. Soft comfortable bench seating, pink walls & little bunnies everywhere you look, not to mention the fresh cinnamon from their Belgian waffles wafting about. It makes me wish I was 6 years old again so I can sit mesmerised by this magical place. Although if I was 6 years old I don't think I'd appreciate the frankly impressive beer & cider selection here as well. They don't stock a lot but it all seems well-chosen with the rare as hell Westvleteren 12 taking pride of place! Oh yes. For that alone I've given this place 5 stars (solving a head-scratching birthday present problem!), but thankfully the crepes played their part too. As always I went for the traditional Nutella.. the young Sophie was proud in telling me her mix was made fresh that morning, and from first bite the texture was warm & soft with just the right amount of Nutella. Lovely stuff. And by the smiling kids streaming in it and greeting Sophie like she's their French auntie, it seems I'm not the only one whose fallen for her charms. I have no idea when I'll be back round these parts, but I'll be damned if I'm missing this place when i return.

There is excellent choice, friendly knowledge service and for those over the age of 18 a fantastic hand picked selection of UK craft beers, Belgian beers (including Westvleteren12!) and artisan ciders and perrys. Truly something for everyone, I have enjoyed many Saturday afternoons eating waffles, drinking great beer and enjoying the atmosphere! Looking forward to the coming expansion to the shop just up the road!

There is a car park situated close by, although on market days you may spend quite some time driving around hoping for a space. Ludlow has a reputation as a foodie town, and is part of the Slow Food movement that started in Italy. You would therefore expect its deli to be good, and this one doesn't disappoint. There are two large chilled counters. These have a good range of things in bowls, such as feta stuffed peppers and many varieties of olives. There are good cheeses including Mrs Kirkham's Lancashire, great Caerphilly and the local Shropshire blue, plus some less well known cheeses from Herefordshire and other parts of the Marches. There is a good range of Patchwork pates, both meat and vegetarian, and some other chilled savouries and meats. The shelves stock condiments, jams and seasonings, plus rice, pasta, sauces and other staples. There is a small freezer cabinet stocking ice cream, and some frozen offerings from Patchwork. The staff are friendly and helpful, and happy to offer up tasters, so you can buy with confidence.

Do bear in mind that the owner works the entire summer season on his own and due to it being extremely busy he understandably gets annoyed when asking customer after customer if it is a single cone they want, or if they just mention two flavours and then expect him to know that they wanted a double cone rather than two singles. It must REALLY grate, especially if he's throwing away his profits because people are too lazy to say what they actually want.
