I had a very poor experience at the commodore perry apartments. I generally am not very picky about my apartments. I have had to move around a lot for work and school; never had any issues with my prior rentals. Commodore perry apartments is by far the worst experience of the bunch. I was unable to view the apartment ahead of time due to the time constraints of starting my new job. I wanted to secure a place before work started, that was my biggest mistake.
1. In emails, I was initially assigned an apt on the 15h floor. However I was changed to the 6th floor without notice and did not find out until my move in date. I had no views except for the neighboring buildings.
2. Smells: There were horrible smells percolating the lower floor hallways. There was a stench of body odor and different food aromas from people cooking that stayed stagnant in the hallways. This has alot to do with the poor air circulation in the old building. I don't think this is an easily rectifiable issue.
3. Mail/packages: I received a lot of packages that were left at the office. The staff initially told me that they would leave the packages outside the office door every time I e-mailed them. They never did except for 1 time, even with repeated e-mails. I had to track down the night time guard to let me in to retrieve them.
4. Noise: The fire alarm would repeatedly go off and there was no way to turn it off except to wait for the fire department. Also during the summer, there would be fireworks daily from the stadium that would be very loud. Also there was alot of yelling that I could hear from the street. I had no issues with my actual neighbors, they were very courteous.
5. Neighborhood: I initially wanted to move downtown because i would to live in a large building and frequent the locals bars and restaurants. However, besides the immediate stadium area on a weekend, downtown is really dead in Toledo. There was always sketchy people around the area on weekday evenings that you definitely wouldn't feel safe walking alone in the area. There would always be people outside the building smoking and drinking right outside the front door. There was no way to get inside without having to wade through a cloud of cigarette smoke each time.
7. Cleanliness: I kept vacuuming my carpet but there would repeatedly be a white powder found in my vacuum every time. The power must be from the carpet which was quite crusty. I have mild seasonal allergies and would sneeze non stop in my apartment even with medications. My girlfriend does not have allergies, but she would constantly have red eyes from irritation in my apartment. There are also multiple stains in the hallway carpets. The whole place looks like it needs a new coat of paint. The parking garage would always have garbage lying around everywhere including old beer bottles, pizza boxes, and plastic bags.
8. Outdated building: The building was very outdated. The last renovation probably hasn't been for at least 2 decades. When the weather started turning colder, I was unable to maintain a tolerable temperature due to all the air leaks from the old windows.
In my time there, I saw many people move in and out repeatedly. I could only assume this place has a high turnover rate. I ultimately only stayed there for 6 months and had to terminate my lease early due to the many issues I had with my apartment. I gladly paid my month and a half's rent termination fee(ended up being $973) which I paid to be able to move out. The termination fee was suppose to cover cleaning costs, advertising fees etc. However upon my final invoice, I get charged extra fees for painting, carpet cleaning, and for 2 blinds. The blinds did not come with my apartment, but somehow I am charged an extra fee. Not only do I lose my deposit, but I have to pay them extra. For anyone that still wants to live downtown and have that luxurious vibe, there are much better options. I have since moved to quail hollow apartments in holland and am much happier. read more
