This is an excellent store that does the job that the Department of Defense requires. It is alway spotlessly clean and provides most products that can be reasonably expected. There are a few ugly remarks on this site. Some elitist commenters seem to expect high-end services such as Wegmans provides. Some have even take swipes at the rural locality, the locals and other bigoted remarks. Be nice folks. read more

Not a bad commissary! I truly expected it to be much smaller since it's such a small base but it's really decent sized! Warning! Do not go on Saturdays unless you need to! It's filled with AIT and BOLC Soldiers who are just flooding the isles and buying random stuff. I've been frequenting the Ft Lee Commissary for the last 3 months. The best times to go are during the week in the morning or after the lunch rush. Avoid Fri/Sat/Sun because the AIT students can go on weekends making it more crowded. Everyone there takes good COVID precautions with sanitizing wipes and hand sanitizer available at the door. Everyone wears a mask, and there is a one-way flow of traffic in and out of the store. Things I didn't know that may help anyone new to shopping at commissaries. You need to have your CAC or dependent ID to checkout. It's scanned before the groceries kind of like a store shopping card. The baggers work for tips only. They aren't paid by the store, so if you go through a regular checkout line you need to have a cash tip. There is a self-checkout line available, but the line is usually backed up into the milk & eggs aisle. I docked a star for the freshness of the produce. It consistently went bad faster than my produce bought at an off-post grocery store. Just know if you get produce there, you better use it up quick! Overall, you can't beat the prices or convenience. read more

This one is pretty large and had everything I needed including some Asian and Mexican stuff that I could not find at the local grocery store. The double baggers had me wonder if I'm supposed to tip both of them but it worked out in the end because only one assisted me to the car. I liked this commissary because it is clean, spacious, tons of parking, and great selection of everything you'll need. The prices are great especially in milk, meat, and produce. read more

The stock is excellent and cleam place. Deli cut back on choices and wish they return back to pre covid. Only issue, open more registers is needed to open. Self check out registers are small and once food is scanned, you must put in bagging area or register stops. Enlarge the area. Baggers work for tips. Again, place is clean and food stock is good. If you have been in one Army Commissary, you have been in them all. I actually went here expecting it to be different, boy was I wrong. I thought I was at Fort Eustis in Newport News. Anyway the store was well stocked, clean and had a friendly staff. The produce section was lacking compared to Langley commissary where I normally shop but it was good. If I actually lived in the area I would not be totally satisfied with this commissary but it satisfied my needs for the time. Meat department appeared small, delhi section is GREAT! Groceries is good as well. Ill visit again when Im in the area however may not make any additional special trips to it unless I really need something. read more

This commissary is serially mediocre. The parking lot is so busy -- at all times of the day -- one would imagine that this business must be one of most excellent standards. If one did that, one would obviously not be factoring the isolation factor where there is nearly no other option in the geographical vicinity or the exclusive capitalistic hegemony yielded by AAFES. Once inside this expansive commissary, one would notice that (a) it is in serious need of remodel; (b) the options for certified organic products is seriously limited; and, (c) the dependents on Fort Lee are almost exactly what one would think a dependent in rural Central Virginia must look like*. *Reference Deliverance (1972). Want certified organic fruit and vegetables? Go elsewhere. Certified organic meat? Elsewhere. Certified organic bread? Elsewhere! A clean store? (Leave Virginia.) I am being very benevolent with my review and rating. There is not much here to purchase if you have higher standards than the typical Southern food-shopper; the queues are preposterously long; and, there is an obvious polarity here with purchasing the highest quality of food items. AAFES should be ashamed that this is the best they can manage. (And don't blame me.) read more

Well if you need grocery from a store the commissary is a grocery store. I will say it is not cheaper then other places it just had some items cheaper and other items more expensive. Parking is down right awful with way to many spots reserved for those of rank. Handicapped I understand but not for rank It's a damn grocery store. If you needed a quick run in I would suggest a tag team approach. 1 person get dropped off and start shopping while the 2nd parks and then goes to check the line holding a place. If person 2 gets blocked in the line the cart can always swing in from the side when it is there partners turn to check out. Other options in the area: -Food Lion -Walmart -Martins (I recommend) Nothing special about this establishment to note. read more

I was quite impressed with the selection at the commissary and how cheap the prices were. I will definitely return here to buy the snacks and food I need. Deli is a must try! Don't leave without a wrap and some fresh seafood salad. Yum! read more

Good prices, clean. Checkout feels a little crowded with the baggers around etc. I love the fruit and veggies they carry, as well as their good chicken breast and rotisserie chicken. Some non-food stuff I needed they did not carry. read more

I don't understand the hatred for the commissary. This one is large, clean, and has fantastic produce and seafood sections. The baggers get a bit of an attitude sometimes, but I attribute that to work environment. The prices are much cheaper than Food Lion and Kroger, and even Wal-Mart. This Commissary is great. They have a free, yes free, order online and pick up service which saves a lot of time. If an item is not in stock they call to confirm substitutions. There is a deli, bakery, and seafood department. People complain about the prices not being cheaper but that is because the Commissary does not sale generic brands. The brand name items are sold at cost the government subsidizes the difference, so if you want cheaper generic brands the Commissary is not for you. read more

Typical commissary. Standard foods with a few overseas (Korean, German, etc.) offerings. Usually packed with small children running all over the place. The checkout lines are slow and even the self-checkout can take a while with all the people who can't figure out how to use the thing. It has good prices on the staples, is clean, and conveniently located, so it gets three stars. read more

The commisary is great when they have caselot sales and big special events. Unfortunatly pay day is a madhouse and I will never risk going on one of"those days" again. Its a clean store with good looking produce section the rest of the store seemed a little disorganized to me.... read more

I am retired Air Force and I shop all the commissaries in southeast Virginia ... best is Fort Eustis ... positive attitude by everyone ... fresh produce ... good meat selection ... worst is Fort Lee. Fort Lee ... smaller selections ... wilted/dated produce ... old fish ... long lines ... checkout clerks with an attitude. A major complaint with all the commissaries are their lack of fresh/unprocessed pork ... all you get is that pork that has been soaked in a brine solution that adds 10% to the weight ... you pay $3.00 a pound for salt water ... bummer read more

The Fort Lee Commissary has been going down hill for some time. It used to be a well stocked reasonably priced store. Recently stocks of goods that I normally buy are either absent or minimal at best. They seem to have gone away from store brand products at the expense of high priced well advertised brands. I used to think of the Commissary as a low priced and well stocked alternative to off post stores. No longer! I now do most of my shopping at Aldi or Walmart stores. read more

You sound like your typical millennial, unwilling to adapt and fit in, you seek to bring chaos and disorder until it molds to your personal desires. Does the parking annoy me? Sure. But instead of complaining about rank, why not complain about the amount of retirees that shop there? After all shouldn't active duty have priority? I'm just a low ranker, but I see the utility in rewarding those that succeed and hope one day I can attain. I believe the reason they are given front parking is due to the hectic and busy job requirements and responsibilities that are demanded of them. Sounds like a good reason. The commissary is a commissary. It provides food at cost or near cost. Of course something's are cheaper, that is just how it is. This is a good commissary contrary to some of the reviews. Always well stocked and prices are much lower than walmart, food dog, and kroger. Parking is tight due to the shared parking lot with the exchange. read more
