The bar with ample whiskey
Michael H.

There are too many fake barbecue joints in the world. This one however, is not. The ribs are excellent the wings fantastic the brisket tasty and a pulled pork delicious. Add to that an amazing bar with whiskey everywhere. They have a great beer selection and can mix up any cocktail you desire. The staff is friendly. The ambience is exactly what you want in a barbecue restaurant the patio outside adds to the experience stop by and enjoy.

Strictly reviewing their whiskey selection and happy hour deal... half off whiskey pours!! Hard to beat that. Service was great and the bartenders knew their stuff for recommendations.

a menu on a table

On a Friday night me and my friends decided to go grab some drink and food. One of our friend suggested we go to 17 ave and try different drinks at different places. We went to 3-4 places and they all were jam packed and long waiting time. We went to Comery Block, and they had waiting of 15-20 mins. So we decided to wait for our turn here. We got seated in 15 mins, that was good. The ambiance is good, hip place, however loud music. They have good variety of scotch whisky, so we decided drink scotch. Drinks came in 10 mins. We started checking their menu and wanted to try their barbecue meats. They have half of the meats after 10 PM, we saw time and it was 10:30 pm, jackpot!! I ordered brisket with jalapeno corn muffin ( that came with butter honey ), my friends got pulled pork with jalapeno corn muffin , brisket with potato salad and brisket with fries. They have 3 different types of in house made BBQ sauces on table. I tried all 3 and they all were different from each other and good. Meats were not hot or warm, and not cold either, however still juicy and delicious. Everything was good and flavorful, except one my friend did not like the potato salad. He said it was too cold. Not sure about him, however I like potato salad cold. In mind I was already scripting my Yelp review and it was all between 4-5 stars and how I am going to be a regular here. We all were enjoying and had 3 drinks by then and were planning to have more, and maybe order more food, however on last bite of my brisket, I got a hair in my bite. And it was not a jackpot any more. Yes, the meats were half price after 10, however not acceptable at any cost with a hair in it. I was shocked and lost my appetite, and so did my friends. We called our waitress and showed her the hair, she apologized and took my plate away to talk to manager. She came back and said that she will take off my half price brisket off the bill. That was like $8.5. One of my friend said to her getting hair in food is like a big deal and mostly restaurants also offer like a gift card as compensation or make a more genuine effort to fix their mistake. She did not say anything and went away and brought our bill with $8.50 off. We paid our bill and left without saying a word. We even tipped her. We are not the ones who like to create scene, however if someone else would have argued and created a scene, they would have offered a gift card or done more discount for something that had ruined our night and appetite. The experience took a nose dive and fell from a potential 4/5 star to 1 star. I strongly believe that strength and character of a restaurant lies in their Customer Experience and how well they handle a difficult situation. Definitely they are not well equipped with that skill. Will I go back there, not sure. At this time if you ask me, NO. Maybe in future. Will I recommend this place, not sure.

Brisket + collard greens + cornbread Pulled pork + fries

Having been to Texas, the threshold for barbecue is pretty high. Comery Block was a solid place for BBQ in Calgary, and it was pretty good service. Service was prompt and we were seated and received our food quickly. The brisket was alright - again, the standard is pretty high but I will give them full stars given that it was already 5 pm at that time so I assume the freshness and moisture in the brisket was slowly dissipating. The pulled pork was nicely flavoured. I'm giving it 5 stars because the sauces really helped with the dryness. The collard greens were also a knock out- buttery and full of meaty flavour. Overall, pretty good bbq!

I heard lots of good things about Comery (mostly from Yelp). I looked at their menu and I saw that they have half off meat by the pound after 10pm. Well, I wasn't hungry at dinner time and decided to wait till 10 pm. Came at 9:50 pm and got a table right away. It was a Thursday night and so it wasn't that busy. They specializes in Tennessee BBQ. I got a quarter lb brisket and a quarter lb rib. The meat came in a tray and took about 10 mins to arrive. It was sure quick. The portion looked small but it is 0.5lb of meat. The brisket was thickly cut. quarter lb rib was basically one bone. The brisket meat was super tender and flavorful. The ribs was marinated in their house bbq. OMG that was good. I added extra sauce on my meat. I tried the Tennessee Brown (which is a smokey honey bbq sauce) and the Memphis Gold (which is mustard with lots of mix ins). The Tennessee Brown was my favorite sauce. It went very well with the meat. I told B about the place and he went on telling S. I guess we will have to all come here together. Service was superb. Everything was great. I am definitely coming back for more BBQ. Best part is that I live within walking distance and so do all my friends.

Ready to get your Tennessee BBQ on? Came with 3 other people around 7:30pm and the place was packed! Fortunately we were seated immediately. The restaurant is a bit small, but had a cool industrial vibe. They serve so many different types of whiskey! Even Japanese whisky! We ordered a bunch of different meats and sides to share. This is definitely a shareable type of place because the sides are on the bigger side. You can order meats by the half pound or go for trays of ribs and chicken tenders. On Wednesday's wings are half off! Lastly, each table has three huge bbq sauce (mustard, hot, brown/sweet). All were very delicious and perfect for the meats. Especially the mustard! Brisket and Pulled Pork - super moist and juicy, even without bbq sauce! Mac and cheese - very, very creamy! Bacon and corn bread on top is a nice touch. Corn - FYI it's wrapped in bacon, small, but super yummy. Broccoli salad - refreshing part of the meal, but there is a lot of mayo Hot wings - great in size and served with ranch! Think it comes with 10 wings, but we got 11. Cornbread - hard and cold with bits of jalapeño pepper in it. Decent with the honey butter, but this was my least favorite part of the meal. Overall the bill was $80 for an amazing meal! All four of us were completely stuffed at the end. Highly recommend this restaurant for any bbq fix!

Whiskey and drafts

I'm going to start off with my reasoning for a 4-star vs 5-star as the reason is simple, sandwiched bread. I ordered a brisket sandwich and the bread was too thick, dry and weak which fell apart quickly. The restaurant itself is very cozy with dark colors, wood, leather and light features. You can't help but notice a wall of bourbons, whiskey and draft beer taps on the far wall when you walk in. All of which look to be top shelf and local drafts. The bartender during the late lunch shift was helpful with all my selections from a draft beer, food and side selections. I've had a lot of bbq in my travel but have never had bacon wrapped corn on the cob which is pictures...and I highly suggest. Very soft, smokey and cut into thirds. The other side I picked were the green beans which were crispy and served with mixed nuts on top. Continuing my brisket sandwich review which was tender and never needed to be sliced or awkwardly pulled apart mid bite. Already coming with a chipotle aeoilie sauce, not much bbq sauce was needed for the meat itself but for the bread (waa waaaaa). Next visit I would opt to order some meat by the pound and pair it with a side. The person next to me had some mac'n'cheese which looked bomb! Lots of seating indoors and outdoors on the patio. Which the patio has heaters which on the cooler 50 degree summer day, they had turned on

Pulled Chicken Sandwich

Another excellent BBQ spot located along 17th Avenue! The pulled chicken sandwich burger that I had was amazing. The buns were nicely toasted and the chicken had a tad charred taste. Sadly, it didn't come with any sides for the price point (though the burger was pretty filling). The only downside is that this place could be a little loud so it's almost impossible to have a proper conversation. Overall an amazing place with great service! IG: @annthefoodie

Nice place. Always accommodating! Excellent atmosphere! The food is good, the staff are super friendly & they have the best food happy hour after 10pm! Half off on some of the meats! Not best place for choice of nachos if you want a traditional kind with jalapeños & aren't sweet!

Great mains. Huge sandwiches. Pretty good house wines. Fine Service and ambiance. $6 sides are overpriced!

Mediocre food. The ribs were okay, the brisket was actually a better deal. The music is a too loud.

BBQ Express

When my parents were visiting, we did some shopping at the TOPS Supermarket that's just off 16th…read moreavenue on center street NW. After browsing on my own, I found my dad but my mom was no-where to be seen. Shortly after, we discovered that she walked down the street to BBQ Express - I didn't even know this place existed and apparently my mom, who hardly ever comes to Calgary knew it existed - she must have had those BBQ duck senses.. Anyways, they are right next to a Vietnamese place and there's a parking lot available. It is exactly what their name is "Bbq express" - they offer BBQ Pork, BBQ Duck, Soya Chicken, Sausage, BBQ ribs, and even Roasted pig's head if you order in advance. When you enter, it smells amazing - delicious Chinese BBQ aroma. You can see all the meats through a glass shield where they are hanging. They only do takeout and only take cash. My mom had ordered half BBQ duck and a pound and a half of BBQ pork. You can select which hanging meat you want to be cut from. The duck is chopped into small pieces and I'm not sure if they cut the BBQ pork but we did ask for it to be cut as well, they also pour some sauce on the BBQ pork. Both orders filled a decent size styrofoam container and you are given a bag of soya sauce, duck sauce and some packets of plum sauce. When we got home, we put on a pot of rice and cooked up some vegetables to go with our protein. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM fresh rice with BBQ duck and pork is one of my favorite combos!! I especially love duck with plum sauce, DROOOLLLLL. The BBQ duck was really good...tender and fatty with a slight crisp on the skin, the BBQ pork was good too, a little tougher but still really tasty, the fatty parts are the best. BBQ Express is a really great place - if you want some reasonably priced delicious Chinese BBQ meats, this is the place to hit up! What a gem of a place if you need to pick up something to bring to a pot luck or if you want to pick up something for lunch/dinner that is quick and tasty. They offer a lunch box special until 3pm(?) which is any two meats with rice, duck is an additional cost because it's so darn good. They are open every day from 10am - 7PM except they are closed on Tuesdays. I can't stop thinking about the BBQ meats here, must go ASAP!!!!

Inflation - 1 lb of Roast pork cost $16.90. It was under $12 few months ago. Quality is good, but…read moreIll have to goto bigger stores for better prices.
