I had to take the DMV drive test but I don't own a car. I also don't need driving lessons having 15…read moreyears of driving experience on a manual shift stick. Going through rental companies is a pain in the ass because you need to obtain a written statement from the car rental saying they allow to be used in a driving test. So I started looking at some driving schools; I called one in the mission with high ratings and the person was extremely rude saying they don't provide a car for the test for those that are not their students. Another school in the mission with high rating requires you to take a driving lesson at least 10 days before to assess your level and the total cost would have come out at more than $450. With some luck I stumbled on Academic driving school and one call and 10 minutes later I had the car booked for my driving test which was in less than a week! The instructor showed up to my address on time, handed the driver seat to me and proceeded to give a 1 hour driving lesson in preparation to the DMV test, with tips on what to do to make sure I pass. Test, needless to say, went super smooth. Then I was dropped off back at my place. If you need a car for the DMV test look no further, it is $289 no hassle experience.

Very friendly and emphasizes on things needed to pass the test. Boosted my confidence driving I was very anxious and nervous and I think this is good for students who aren't comfortable driving.

Juan was a great instructor with many years of experience. He helped me go from never driving at…read moreall to passing the exam on my first try. His feedback is direct and if anything needs to be explained in detail, we would pull over and he would draw a diagram to help me understand. He picks you up and drops you off at your home which was also helpful. We started in a parking lot and worked our way up to more complicated environments as I got more confident. He also has a specialized car with breaks on his side which also made me feel at ease while behind the wheel. Highly recommended!

I would not recommend this driving instructor. My experience included:…read more* Frequently 20-30 minutes late to lessons (and occasionally excessively early without notice) * Never provided two full hours of driving -- he counted his travel time to my location as part of my paid lesson * Canceled lessons or failed to show up as agreed * Used paid lesson time to run personal errands (AT&T, T-Mobile for phone issues) * Drove to the Mission District during my lesson to collect money from someone who owed him * Had me pick up another student during my lesson or placed me in the car while another student was driving * Made comments I found misogynistic and racially insensitive * Repeatedly called me a "slow learner" and labeled me dyslexic instead of offering constructive instruction The most alarming part happened around the date of my driving test. We had clearly confirmed a Saturday lesson at the DMV to prepare. He did not show up. When I contacted him, he insisted it was scheduled for Sunday, despite text messages confirming Saturday. On Sunday, he arrived late. Then on the actual day of my driving test (the following Monday), he was again about 30 minutes late. I had to call him -- he was asleep. Being forced to track down my instructor on the morning of the driving test is not what anyone expects from a professional service. Instead of helping reduce stress, his behavior added to it. By the end of this experience, I did not feel supported, respected, or professionally instructed.
