I am very happy with the results of Collin Huey for a driving instructor for my teen. He was punctual and had written material to give my daughter to read and study. His teaching style sticks and you learn fast with how he explains things. After each lesson he debriefs with the student and Tells them what they need to work on. Then he will go over it with me, the parent and give me tips on where to go and what additional exercises I should practice with my teen. My teen passed with flying colors today after a 15 minute driving test. Even the DMV tester said my child has a good test score. read more

Getting your license is expensive and time-consuming. And if you had to read that sentence again...Yes, I finally got around to obtaining my license at the ripe age of 25, the day before Halloween. :) After spending $1260 and 21 hours behind the wheel, I am FINALLY a licensed driver. Pan S. Lee, my driving instructor and the owner of the business, took me all over Daly City, a few times we ventured in the streets of San Francisco during rush hour and once out over towards Pacifica. He taught me how to break softly, how to look both ways (and again!) before making my turns, how to make right and left turns (including left turns with oncoming traffic..eek!), how to backup in a straight line, how to master the three-point turn, how to make a u-turn, how to park uphill and downhill, (briefly) how to parallel park, and all other things driving...but I think I've covered it all there. It was awesome getting to know Pan S. Lee, a person I wouldn't normally talk to based on age and industry. We talked about all things random. He liked to refer to people as either watermelons or pumpkins. He enjoyed getting fast food before my driving lesson so I would hear him eating beside me, his number somethings from Arby's or some other fast food chain. When I finished my drivers license test, I was able to do a drive thru to McDonald's for his lunch. Awesome. BIG Recommendation: Pay in cash because of the big minus below. BIG MINUS: - I wrote all but one of my driving lessons in check form. Pan had decided to cash them in all at once the day of my last driving lesson and they went through the following day. It could be that I am interpreting this all wrong BUT he had mentioned that he had turned them in two weeks ago but they miraculously were put through in one day. I guess that WOULD be fine, except I get paid once a month and the checks all went through on the 31st. And some of these checks were written back in August. read more

I believe that A-Safe Way Driving School is under new ownership and management so I would suggest ignoring old reviews. My instructor was Collin Huey, who I believe is the new owner of the business, and he was excellent. Collin was very thorough. He didn't just teach me how to pass the test, he taught me how to actually drive. I booked to do the test in San Mateo as it is a much less busy DMV than the ones in San Francisco or Daly City. As I live in the city, this meant I got a lot of driving practice on the freeway. Collin was great at teaching me defensive driving techniques so that I felt confident I knew what I was doing. I was given a lot of extra materials - videos, leaflets, books - to help me study between lessons. This was useful - especially the video - though honestly the main thing is lots of practice! The other thing I really appreciated with Collin was that he didn't try to nickel and dime me on the time. I always got the full time I paid for and sometimes more (though obviously this is not something you can expect). I felt that he was on my side and could trust him to tell me when I was ready. I took the test in early January and passed with flying colours. The next weekend I rented a car in San Diego and drove it all weekend without any drama, even in a torrential rainstorm! read more

I passed my driving test yesterday at the Fell St. DMV with only 2 errors. I have a mixed review for this driving school. The positives: Colin is really personable. He is super funny and quite a character actually. He had me driving on the street my first lesson and by my second or third lesson, I was in the freeway. I appreciate the "jump right in" attitude that he had. It kind of forces you to work against your reservations/fears about driving. Colin can be pretty stern and while some may see that as a negative...just wait until you go to an actual DMV (I.e. The Oakland/Claremont DMV examiner...RUDE!)! His sternness also helped me to remember not to make the same mistakes over and over, though it was technically negative reinforcement. Overall, I had gotten a lot of basic experience in a short amount of time. Negatives: I think Colin is the only instructor, so he is spread pretty thinly between clients. This caused scheduling problems for me. I needed consistent lessons but could not always be accommodated. There was also one instance where we had a scheduled appointment but Colin did not show because he did not write me down and scheduled someone else. Also, I was having a lesson and he fell asleep. The route was pretty smooth and by that point in the lesson I already knew to stop, yield, adhere to speed limits etc. Plus I'm a pretty trustworthy driver but I think trusting that a student was just going to drive without any problems, is a serious issue and a liability. I felt that the quality went down after I had had more lessons. He discouraged me from taking my test at the Fell St. DMV. I was really nervous about it and stressed! I tried so hard and was so upset about finding an appointment somewhere else! I got an appointment at Oakland/Claremont and failed it there. The key thing to remember when scheduling your test is, consider where you'll be driving the most and to practice in that area. That is ultimately what will determine your success! And to trust in your skill. Know that any DMV will have potentially rude staff and examiners but that is not determined by location necessarily. Fell St. DMV is really not that bad except for the wait. The examiners were just fine and all of the people working there were just fine. I've not had a bad experience at Fell St. DMV. Lastly, sometimes I felt that Colin made some statements/remarks that were racist in regards to the Latino and Black communities. I won't go into them but as someone who is not Black or Latina, I will say that I felt they were a little offensive and should not have been said. Bottom line: This was not the right fit for me. I did end up using a different driving school that I was happier with overall. They were more available to me and consistent and that was what I needed. I was a very anxious driver with not only a deadline to get my license but also some trauma. I don't think that nervous or anxious drivers would benefit from this school. It would be more costly but look into another one. Colin would be great though for someone with experience driving who just needs to brush up or a new driver who isn't anxious and is ok learning without consistency. read more

Colin is ridiculous. We made an appointment with him last Tuesday for a driving lesson at 8am on Saturday. He texted us back confirming the time, date, and place to meet. On Saturday we drive to meet him and he's not there at 7:57am. So we call him, and it turns out this guy is IN BED. We have to find out that out lesson is not happening by CALLING HIM 3 MINUTES before we're scheduled to meet. Waste of my time and embarrassing for this business. My instructor was Colin Huey and I thought he was great! He was incredibly patient, knew exactly what he was doing and I thought he did a good job pushing me to be more assertive on the road. He is pricier than all the other driving instructors in the city but I think he's worth every penny. When i talked to my friends about their driving instructors they didn't seem nearly as professional and they didn't seem to learn as much as I did. I felt myself getting better behind the wheel behind the day. Colin is a driving instructor that doesn't just enjoy his job, but he really cares about the student he teaches. He was always very focused on the road and he went over time with me when he could. The best part of all is that I had 10 days to pass my license test before I headed back to school. She took three lessons within 1 month and took the test exactly 30 days after her first lesson. I could not have taught her myself. I get too mad and she starts crying. Without Colin showing her the basics and working with her, I don't know she would have learned. Great job. Would do it again. It worked out to the best of my dreams. Lily is a nice lady and a very sharp instructor; don't bother lying to her, she knows you didn't check your mirror that time. If you can go 2 hours without her chastising you, you'll have no trouble with the DMV. The only negative is that the car was a Toyota Corolla (auto), which handled like a marshmellow, but other instructors may have other vehicles. read more

The instructor who taught my son to drive was Collin Huey. He was very professional and arrive on time. He not only allowed, but encouraged me, to ride along while he was teaching my son. So, while he was teaching me son how to drive, he was also teaching me how to teach me son. I am not a patient person but Collin was very patient and thorough with my son. He went over the rules of the road and how to maneuver the car. I forgot how much there was to learn while learning how to drive but Collin covered it. Collin does tends to talk a lot but he does this to get to know the student so he can adapt his teaching methods to the student. Teaching/learning is a 2-way street. There needs to be communication between the teacher and student. If the student is uncomfortable with Collin talking, the student should say so. I also noticed that Collin was pointing out things I thought was irrelevant such as the jogger or the kids horsing around on the sidewalk and I brought this to his attention. He explained that he is pointing it out because they could be potential hazards and my son needed to be aware of them, like in case the jogger decided to cut in between cars to cross the street. So I got the point as to why he was doing it. Collin also answered the phone while he was teaching my son how to drive. This only happened a couple of times. I told Collin after the lesson that I thought it was rude for him to answer the phone as I paid for this time and it should belong to my son. Collin told me he was a small business owner and needed to talk any potential students. He was polite about it and apologized. He had my son continue doing maneuvers while he was talking. At no time did I feel he was putting my son or me in danger as he was observing everything that was going on while he was talking. He then told me that's why my son lesson was 2 1/2 hours rather than the 2 hours I paid for because he always gives extra time if he has to talk on the phone. Overall, it was a pleasant experience that I recommended him to my wife's cousin for his two sons. I am also having Collin continue teaching my son beyond the 6 hours of mandatory time for minors in California as I said before, I am not a patient person. I got my license 7 years ago at the ripe (or is it rotten?) age of 16. Within a year I shattered my windshield on a mailbox trying to make a stealth getaway after egging someone's house, struck many walls, blew the clutch, and crashed my car twice with the last crash completely totalling the car. Needless to say, I stayed away from cars for a long time, until 2008 when I got the itch to drive again. I still had a valid license, but had developed a fear of driving and had forgotten basic skills. So, I made an early morning appointment with A-Safe Way back in July to help myself get back on the road. I was so nervous the day of the appointment, and became even more nervous when I saw who my instructor was- an old lady who looked about 60, which means she was probably about 10 years older. I mean if that ain't the triple threat of doom, I don't know what is. (Also--I wasn't expecting a BMW or anything too nice to drive, but I don't know what the hell was up with the old crusty ass corolla she arrived in.) We spent 20 minutes in my driveway. She used a steno pad to 'illustrate' driving situations and a few of her favorite crash stories. I use the term 'illustrate' loosely 'cause what she was producing on the paper looked like a jumble of confetti, Morse Code, and random ass scribbles that made no sense as she frenetically chattered. On the road, she chattered a lot too, but not to me. Her phone rang loudly several times during the drive and she answered every time while tossing out unclear directions to me inbetween. I thought that was rude and unprofessional, and put a strain on what was already a stressful situation. By the end of the allotted time, I was pretty aggravated and disappointed that I had received such a poor instructor who was more interested in removing crud from her fingernails and flinging it into my airspace than guiding me. The topper is when she turned to me and asked with a hint of condescension if I had enough money to schedule another appointment. Please! Skip the epic fail of riding around in a marshmallow on wheels with an unintelligible grandma, and spend your money elsewhere (I went to Ann's). read more

Collin Huey is a great driving instructor. I took several lessons after letting my license lapse in Europe several years ago. The first thing he did was immediately to get me behind the wheel. He gave me a score of written material as well, told me videos to look at on YouTube for driving tips, was always punctual with our appointments and, during the driving lessons, he was always very generous with his time, expertise and advice. He trained me in everything I needed in order to pass my driver's examination. He is absolutely A+, a top-flight driving instructor, a very friendly, genial and patient teacher and person. He has quite an interest in his students learning to drive correctly and is sincere and honest. So I passed my test in flying colors and I chalk it up to Collin. Would give zero stars if possible. The instructor (Lily) showed up 20 minutes late, When she finally got to my apartment her car smelled terrible. I was gagging the whole time. Pork potstickers reek. She then ran through some safety tips, whilst scribbling all over my permit. Does she not have a notepad???? I explained to the instructor that i had NEVER been behind the wheel before. Yet she insisted on bringing me on to 19th Ave. Scary stuff for a first time driver!!!!! She constantly raised her voice at me and was sharp, even rude. Did she not hear me telling her I had never driven before? I was a nervous wreck getting out of the car. It took me more than 8 months to get back into the driving seat. Anns driving school rocks!!! Colin is a quality instructor who makes sure you're not cutting corners when it comes to rules of the road. He puts you through the basic modus operandi of being a driver and instills it into your mind. What I've learned from my instruction is starting to become habit which is how it should be. My first lesson taught me the basics, from there I was mostly driving on parental supervision and learning day by day but after two driving test attempts (He picks your up 2 hours before your test, goes around the testing area and the pitfalls/traps with you before checking in) with Colin and some fast learning I got my license 2 months before my permit was set to expire and now I no longer have to commute on BART, CalTrain and SamTrans to get to class in San Mateo. I've always been an anxious person so when it came time to learn how to drive in the city I opted to forgo the stress of city driving and take Muni. Alas, years passed and I turned 24-years-old last August and decided it was time to conquer my fear. I went online and found the cheapest driving school and took lessons weekly for a couple months- however I ended up failing the driving test. It was a traumatic experience for me because I felt like a failure. However, I decided to give it one more shot. This time I called A-Safe Way driving school. I grew up and went to Catholic high school in the city of San Francisco and had heard many tales of the previous owner Mr. Lee and his crazy antics. When I called to infer about the school Mr. Collin Huey answered and explained he was the new owner. The prices were much steeper, and I told Mr. Huey that, but he reassured me it was worth the extra time and supplemental material he could give me. Collin was correct, on our first lesson he arrived with informational articles and DVD's for me to take home to supplement our one-on-one driving sessions. Collin was professional, yet warm, and really got to know me well during our time together. This past Thursday April 8th, 2010 was my second attempt at the behind the wheel test. Due to the fact that the Catholic high schools were on spring break he had scheduled drivers education classes in advance. However, Collin got a substitute teacher just so he could take me to my test. I passed my exam with flying colors, which in the big scheme of things is not a big deal. To me though it was a huge milestone, I had spent years of fearing driving and questioning my ability to drive. Without the one-on-one support, supplemental material, and fantastic defensive driving techniques Collin has provided me I would not be a licensed driver today. I am eternally gratefully and would 100% recommend A-Safe Way Driving School! read more

I did refresh my driving knowledge and got accurate answers from Colin about traffic questions. He was also very generous(giving out fruit, snacks, etc) . My instructor was Collin Huey and he was a good instructor for behind-the-wheel training, he also helped me take my dmv test. I feel like he over prepared me for my driving test, which was a really good thing because I passed my test on the first try. The test seemed over simplified compared to the driving lessons I had, which involved parallel parking, driving in reverse, three point turn, and driving on the fwy. He offered plenty of resources to pass my test, like dvd's, worksheets, and other visuals. Before taking these lessons I was a terrified driver and now I love driving thanks to him. read more

I attended Collin Huey's Traffic School class on Monday. There were four of us in attendance. The class starts at 9am and ends at 4:30pm - there's two brief breaks as well as 30 mins for lunch. Collin is professional and very knowledgable but runs a friendly and casual class. There's plenty of video's and lots of give and take. The day goes by very quickly. I went here a while ago because a lot of my friends had, and now I am completely stumped as to why this place is popular at all. The office is very disorganized and so is the overall operation. The online course seemed to have been written in a hurry; it was riddled with repetition, misspellings, etc. My behind-the-wheel teacher, Collin Huey, was scatter-brained and unprofessional. In addition to double-booking lessons, he gave instructions that were extremely hard to follow for different reasons. He told me to make turns or change lanes with very little notice; he would periodically pick-up phone calls on his bluetooth while instructing me, which was confusing because I couldn't tell if he was talking to me or not; all directions were given suddenly yet unclearly, to the point that I performed badly just because I was always stressed or startled. For example, he would tell me to "change lanes now" right before an intersection, and when I did he said, "Not in the middle of an intersection! Automatic fail!" One time, we came across a driver who was holding up an entire lane, and he cursed at him a couple of times. Also, he constantly told me to honk the horn to let other drivers know I was there - which is pointless and only annoys other drivers. Looking back, it was all actually kind of funny - the only things I learned about were road rage and how to be an annoying, spastic driver. Overall, the experience was stressful and unpleasant from start to finish. Luckily, I finally got my license (I learned everything while practicing with my parents). To avoid driving lessons that will throw you off and stress you out, I would suggest not coming here. I wouldn't recommend these lessons to anyone even if they were free. read more

My son's instructor was Collin Huey. He is really into the teaching and learning of the whole driving experience. Collin's kept us informed of our son's progress and went over the items that we need to work with him on. My son went with another driving school last year and didn't have a good time or work well with the instructor. I guess the only minus side would be that Colin's is really over friendly at times and that may rub the younger crowd the wrong way. We had Collin with our son for two session for more driving time before taking his driving test. He passed!! read more

Colin Huey is my daughter's driving instructor, and I have to say that Colin is able to get my daughter to what she needed to do to become a confident person behind a wheel , Colin was able to have my daughter driving with confidence in the first lesson. With his patience and excellent guidance my daughter really enjoys driving now and does not have a fear about getting behind the wheel anymore. Shoot she even parallel parks the car with NO problems. As a parent, the change and joy that I can see in my daughter about her driving skill is priceless. I recommend Colin to any Parent and/or student that is learning how to drive. read more
