The Capital Area Humane Society is, in my experience, the best place in Columbus to adopt a pet. The building and its property are very clean and well-maintained. There are plenty of volunteers busy cleaning and feeding, talking to guests, and even helping to narrow down a pet for you.
I adopted my first cat, Mia, from there about three years ago. We still have her (of course!) and I have never had any problems with her. The adoption process was smooth, and they made sure that she was going to a good home. $70 for an adult cat (and they were being generous, she was not quite a year old yet) is a great fee when you consider that they are spayed/neutered, given vaccinations and de-wormers, and micro-chipped. In fact, I adopted her in November, which was their "two for one" deal. My brother and I split the $70 and each got a cat (so only $35 each!).
Well, after having lost my dog recently, I was interested in adopting another cat that would be as affectionate as my dog was. I went there on Saturday and saw tons of great cats; one was especially handsome and loving, but someone was already filling out an adoption form for him. Unfortunately, there weren't any others there that really pulled me, so we left and went to Petsmart. None there, either.
Sunday, my brother and I went to another local animal rescue, and the cats there were not nearly as healthy as the ones at the humane society. Granted, that rescue saves feral cats, so it's understandable that they're a bit more beat-up and sicker than we're used to seeing. I left, went home to change my clothes and wash my hands, arms and neck with anti-bacterial soap (didn't want to infect the kitties at the next shelter!), and then for some reason, decided to go back to the Capital Area Humane Society even though I hadn't found anything there the day before. It ended up being one of the best decisions I've made.
I took a few cats into their "Get Acquainted" rooms, and there were some great cats there that I petted, but still none pulled me. But then, there in the cage, sat the cat I was intrigued by yesterday. I was shocked. I thought for sure that couple had adopted him! They must have changed their mind. It took me a while to really decide (I was going to head to one more rescue just to make sure I saw all the cats I could before deciding). Originally I was only going to put him on hold. Thankfully, my brother convinced me to fill out a form.
Not long after, Bugatti (now named Skye) was mine! He is an amazing cat. Actually, he is the "purr"-fect cat for me!
Moral of the story: the CAHS is definitely the place to go if you're looking to adopt a cat or dog. They rate at five stars on cleanliness, helpfulness, and care. I have adopted two cats from there now, and I wouldn't hesitate to do so again in the future. read more
