I decided to go back to nursing school and knew that I would have to take an exam that had a math category. I had been so fearful to take the exam but decided to get the help I needed in math by signing up at mathnasium. I am so happy I did! I not only learned multiple strategies for solving math problems but also had various tutors who made the math fun and actually... easy! Math became understandable which was not always the case for me. I have taken away many life skills I will use from here on out. There are no words to describe how grateful I am for their patience and persistence during my time with them. I would not have passed the math category in the test if it had not been for mathnasium. The national average in the math category for this particular test was at a 68%. I passed the national average and scored a 79%. Based on good reviews of the Mathnasium system, impressions from talking with Beatrice and visiting the new location, we got started before the summer started. Getting started was very easy. After a test to see where my son needed help we were given a plan and got started. My child has been attending sessions this summer and will continue throughout this next school year. He is motivated and continues to go to math sessions with enthusiasm. Mathnasium offers incentives for the kids to progress and I have added some of my own at home. My son likes the incentives and he is gaining confidence in his math skills. This will not only help him in math this next year but I believe that confidence will spill over to other areas as well. As a parent I want to help my child but I'm not always able to be as effective as I would like. Beatrice and her staff have provided a great relief for both me and my son by helping him learn what he needs to learn and reinforcing what he already knows. The location has worked out well for us as well. There is always parking and if I need to run a few errands during my child's session, there are a few businesses that I frequent in Sequoia Station which has been super convenient.

As a 2006 alumn of Carlmont, I feel it is only appropriate to give my two cents about the place…read more Overall opinion: one of the best public high schools around. Mrs. Jenoff, the principal who I believed just retired, is responsible for bringing a lot of great things to Carlmont and giving students the opportunity to attend great universities. That's what I found so interesting about the place: you have students getting accepted to MIT, Harvard, and Stanford but also students dropping out and failing classes. Having said that, I think Carlmont is great for high achieving students who need advanced classes and teachers to challenge them, and great for under achieving students who need a less-than-average pace and teachers to slow it down for them. However, I believe that the average students in the regular classes were often forgotten. I know it can be difficult to teach to a wide range of learning abilities, which often happens in the regular-paced classes, but I think a better job could be done in this area. Besides academics, there are many sports teams to participate in, which was my main school-sponsored extracurricular activity. I know there is also a choir, band, theatre, and a very good dance program available. Not so sure how well "student run" organizations go. Regarding student body, Carlmont is extremely diverse. I remember hearing at least 4 different languages in the school hallways on any given day, yet social groups remained rather segregated. Students bused in from the surrounding areas did not often interact with students from Belmont or San Carlos nor the other way around. All in all, I think every type of student can find friends that are like them, classes that fit their needs, and activities they enjoy at Carlmont. It may not be a good fit for a student who needs a lot of attention, as the student body is large (around 500 per class I believe) so a student can easily feel unnoticed. Fights sometimes happened, but rarely. Drugs are also there, but completely avoidable if you have friends who also avoid them. I hope this review helps... I think Carlmont is only improving every year.
