Did you know that this is the highest AND largest steel arch bridge in the state of California? Plus it remains one of the tallest in the country at 400 ft above the canyon floor? Fact. It originally opened in 1964 and is on the Historic Register of Historic Places, plus a designated Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1976. They recently confirmed this bridge was stable and repainted it the green color it has always been. Unfortunately, locals used to refer to it as 'suicide bridge' due to people ending their lives by jumping. Since March of 2012, that had been 55 suicides. You will still find crosses of those who took their lives at the base. Since then, they have installed a metal fence barrier on the sides to prevent this from happening. It's a beautiful bridge in the cold spring canyon. Surrounding area is a scenic canyon also. Amazing engineering skills , made entirely of welded steels. You see quite a few crosses on the side of the road. read more

Now that they finally erected the suicide prevention barrier, this bridge is very beautiful. Thank you CalTrans for finally doing this suicide prevention barrier and hopefully you will do the Coronado-San Diego bridge suicide prevention barrier very soon and then it would be one of the most beautiful bridges in the entire world. This used to be a great scenic bridge you could jump from till they erected a giant barrier on both sides. I don't know why they can't just let the public go out with beauty rather than in a bath tub or enclosed shed. read more
