How have I never been to this preserve?! What a freaking cool place…read more Pro tip: the abandoned buildings are stupid easy to find, don't be like me and wander for a good hour/hour and a half wondering where they are. As you may be aware of, the preserve is home to the Holocaust museum for the county (which I plan on visiting sometime soon). If you find parking on the left side of the building (the side with the butterfly garden) you will find the abandoned building on the right side of the museum, as if you venture down to the water. There's a few buildings to see and the history behind them is pretty cool. Next time I will have to bring my Canon to take some nicer shots. Wear good gripping shoes as it can be muddy and you'll slip and side a bit. There are signs for no dogs but plenty of people brought their Fido's and Fifi's.

We really enjoyed it. We started by the mansion. It's suppose to be a museum but it' is closed due to COVID. There is a garden which is very beautiful and the placards around the garden tells you about why the garden is there. It is dedicated to the children of Holocaust. There is lots of woods with many different paths to walk. They set it up nicely with small bridges over a stream with rocks. The path we took led us to the ocean. There is a beach in one side and the LI sound on the other. We walked for almost an hour and it was very enjoyable. We didn't get to see the abandoned buildings with graffiti on them because of the timing . However we will be coming back possibly earlier to be able to see more. Definitely worth the trip. There is free parking.

Don't park anywhere near his house of because he will come out and berate you. Instead drive up the dirt trail by the preserve sign and you will find a dirt lot. I had a quick change of plans yesterday when I was out in the Huntington area, so I decided to stop here, because it was on the way. I figured that with the millions of trees here, there must be some fall color. There was, but you had to seek it out. Early on you will see a junction, well signed that says the foot path is to your right. Heed that, because if you bear left you may have my experience of just missing an idiot going full tilt on his racing bike with inches to spare. The trails were mainly gentle, but the state might want to send somebody in to pick up candy wrappers and McDonalds wrapping relics. This is a park that I would only visit in the fall, so maybe next year I will be happier with the experience.

Visit Date: January 3, 2024…read more I visited stillwell to hike the trail on my all trails app. The trail the all trails app has is a 4.30 mile loop. I think Stillwell is one of the closest hikes on LI that would kind of compare to upstate or Mountain hikes. I think it's more for mountain biking but you can hike it as well. The trail is pretty and it covers a lot of mileage. I liked it but if you're used to hiking something flat you might want to avoid this trail.

Make sure to bring water, bug repellent and a face mask with you. Small parking lot so if you want an early start...we were able to find parking for 2 cars shortly before 10am on a weekday. Follow the path once you start to not get lost.. there are several hiking paths and a bike path. We took Long Island Greenbelt Trail - followed the green markers all the way. There is a section that runs by the LIRR and a section by the streets where you have to cross the road to continue the path. I would not have known if my friends had not been here for sure! We passed the tree branch "arch", walked across the street to continue hiking (I believe it was Syosset/Woodbury), saw parts of an old vehicle left behind, followed steps to where we could hear and see the LIRR railroad and train (stay off the tracks!), walked under the overpass, came to a wooden bridge, to the open field which we walked all the way around and headed back.. Good idea of keeping track of these as land markers to help get us back... I for one would have totally be lost in the woods! There is cellular service reception... Please pay attention to the warning signs about feral cats and beware of ticks...don't litter, stay on the trail, stay have and have a great time! Waking New Year's morning , I went on All Trails for moderate 1st day hike before visiting family in Melville. Noted the Jayne's Hill Trail with the distance I was seeking, about 2.5-3 miles and made my way there. My experience was a serene ans scenic, if somewhat slippery walk as some of the trail was hardpack with an ice glaze. I enjoyed the challenge of finding purchase and having to be mindful of my steps. The terrain was varied, flat, winding, hilly in spots, but I would say easy for anyone. Reaching the summit, no longer ocn and sound views even with the bare trees, but enjoyed the nice memorial to WW.
