Turn in to the fish hatchery entrance and park your car. Get the key from the admission booth by giving them your license to hold onto. Head back towards the church and make a right up the hill to the upper parking lot. Walk southward along the path until you get to the entrance. The sanctuary is small, only fourteen acres but a pristine natural gem. The path is about 0.5 miles. Before leaving, check out the groves of laurel trees and rhododendrons that grace the gently sloping hillside. And don't forget to bring the key back to the Admission booth.

I figured that with the millions of trees here, there must be some fall color. There was, but you had to seek it out. Early on you will see a junction, well signed that says the foot path is to your right. Heed that, because if you bear left you may have my experience of just missing an idiot going full tilt on his racing bike with inches to spare. The trails were mainly gentle, but the state might want to send somebody in to pick up candy wrappers and McDonalds wrapping relics. This is a park that I would only visit in the fall, so maybe next year I will be happier with the experience.

Washington Rock Park is more of a scenic overlook than it is a park and unfortunately you're not…read moregonna find any Hiking Trails or outdoor Picnic Areas with Grills anywhere near here, but it is still a pretty cool Historic New Jersey Landmark plus it was an important part of the Revolutionary War.     In May of 1777 this mountain overlook provided General George Washington's Army a vantage point in order to see the British encampments below which solidified an edge for any future troop engagements.    Long story short, the mountain's sheer height and location made it the perfect observation site and natural defensible fort. Definitely worth checking out if you ever find yourself in this immediate area. Come And Get Your History On!!

I didn't park on Fort Salonga Road to get in, google maps always takes me a different way so I entered the trail from Makamah Road. The hike I took was a little over a 2 mile loop and I did it in snow because I will hike in snow even though it's a little rough. I had a great time looking at all the nature and actually taking time to think about stuff in life and realize what I want, what I don't want, what's in my life that could give me what I'm looking for, what I have to do to go get what I'm looking for. I might come back here with someone I'm currently flowing with if it still keeps up or again by myself or with my son when he's older and can handle a longer hike.

To the right, or Eastern half, the trail has hills ans passes a creek and pond, and then leads to a tidal area of Long Island Sound. To the left, or Western half, the trail tend to be flatter and passes through woods until again coming to the Northern end of the park and the tidal area. If you walk quietly, you will see chipmunks and the occasional deer along the trail. Please be careful of all the poison ivy on the sides of the trail and growing up some of the trees.

The sanctuary is less crowded and a more desirable destination. One can park their car in the Rye park parking lot all the way at the end ($10) during peak warm season and enjoy. *Fishing is forbidden, although we saw a few people fishing a few times.*
