Head to Coffee Fellows. Your train is delayed or cancelled in Mannheim? Head to Coffee Fellows. While I prefer to seek out local and unique coffee houses on a good travel day. On a day that I'm essentially sleep walking or loaded down with luggage and not up to exploring, this German chain is my coffee comfort zone. There are three locations in Mannheim, but the lounge at the Hauptbahnhoff was a welcome site. The decor is modern, subdued and swank. In my mind it is the German version of Starbucks. They always have good space for groups so you can have a meeting or otherwise spread out and work or visit with friends and colleagues. The menu is a whole host of coffee drinks, but I'm a fan of their hot chocolate. Lots of seasonal options and special drinks. They have a few other food items on their menu, but the focus is definitely on bagels. Not just plain, but filled with all sorts of interesting items. Elegant grab-and-go for your train trip.

Bagelstein is not bad, don't get me wrong. The interior is very nice, they try their best to appeal to young customers by being hip and witty. I decided on a (mini) Gab bagel, a small sized one (they get props for that, I like that they offer smaller sized bagels if you're not that hungry), whole grain bagel with pastrami, cream cheese, grilled peppers, red onions and bbq sauce. The bagel was too doughy and dry for my taste, and as they're definitely far from being generous with the toppings the dryness really stood out. It tasted decent, but due to the dry bagel and few toppings it was rather unsatisfying. I will come back to try out the sweet bagels, chips (they have some really unusual chips), coleslaw and desserts, and I might adjust my review accordingly.

I was happy to find out that they have a different bagel every day - but I didn't have any this time. Instead I had a very good lactose-free latte macchiato, with a delicious slice of banana bread.
