Once COVID hit I was not sure how I felt about putting my daughter in school but knew that she needed interaction with other children due to how shy she was and how upset she would get when my husband or I would go to work. Once my husband and I walked into Smith Mills Preschool we knew in that moment that they would be the ones who we trusted with our daughter. All the staff at this school are AMAZING and make you and your child truly feel welcome and at home. Once being enrolled my daughter has blossomed from a shy little girl holding my leg each morning to giving me a kiss and not noticing I'm gone at drop off. This shows me completely that my daughter feels safe and loved here. At pickup time she talks the whole way home about her friends, teachers and activities. It just warms my heart how loving, compassionate and open armed this whole school is. I hope each and every person who has come into contact with my daughter knows how truly grateful we are to them for taking care and treating our daughter like one of their own. They will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

If your child has any type of delay please do not have them attend this daycare for they are not patient or even caring enough to work with you and your child to try and better them to succeed. They refused to help my child with his speech delay and they do not help potty train and if you are a single mom like me working a lot then that is key. This play is constantly getting new workers, my son had a different teacher aid in his classroom every three months. The owner dared to ask me for a note from my sons doctor so he could move into the preschool room after I just explained to her that my son is in speech therapy. This review is for my experience with the 3 yr old room only…read more First I will say that the room is always changing. There were two teachers at the beginning but then a couple months in one left. Then there were two teachers who helped while they tried to find another teacher for a month or so. Then they finally got another teacher. Also as kids turn 4 they leave the 3 yr old room and go into the 4 yr old room, so if that was your kids best friend then tough luck. Also if kids turn 3 they are put into the 3 yr old room. This means if your kid likes routine they will have different teachers and different kids throughout the whole year. Next onto things that happened. My son had "bad days" at school the entire year except for maybe a handful of times in the last two months or so. When I first asked how he was doing I got "nothing to worry about". Then that turned into "hes definant". When I asked what they thought was going on the response was "I do not know what his home life is like". So trying to be proactive I set up an time to meet to try to help my sons behavior at school. I informed them that at home we do the 1,2,3 magic and it works. They were unwilling to do this. Instead what they do is put kids in the calm down chair, because you know if your kid is having problems sitting still during story time and has some energy then obviously putting him in a chair will help (sarcasm intended). I then brought up a sticker reward and if he did well he could earn stickers. I even bought them stickers. Now on a good portion of his good days when I would pick him up I would hear the teacher say "(name) had a good day but we forgot to do the sticker so we will do it tomorrow okay!". useful right? What my son did that contributed to bad days: did not sit still during story time threw mulch threw snow threw a hula hoop did not nap (even though I was told they did not have to nap) cried because he could not have ice cream because he would not eat strawberries (he hates strawberries and I never pack them for his lunches). etc Literally every day I picked him up I was told "not a good day", "tough day", "bad day". etc. If he did something good it was all ruined by one time not sitting still. At home my son sets the table, puts his dishes in the sink or dishwasher, picks up his toys, does his workbooks and letters, puts laundry in, will vacuum, and sweep willingly (WILLINGLY). But at this school they never were proactive about his behavior and refused to work with me to get him to behave. Pros: Affordability, Time Availability (all day till 5, any day of the week), and Location (close to where we live). Cons: my son did not learn anything in terms of educational learning or social learning. the 3rd year old classroom is a daycare. That is the bottom line. It is not a preschool. When we evaluated this school for next year we realized that the pros were all for our benefit and not his, and that made our decision about where to send him next year easy.

The campus is beautiful, but beyond that, a few things stood out. 1. The head of middle school was great. She was engaging and immediately handed me two business cards. She asked me to please pass one on to my child and let them know that they could contact her with any questions they may have. My child felt like the head of middle school genuinely cared about them and proceeded to send an email asking a few questions/concerns they had. This was huge for my child. 2. All of the students played together. We watched a huge divide occur in 2nd grade at our previous school. Boys played football and soccer, and girls stood around. At St. Michael's the main playground equipment is built to accommodate all ages. Kids all played together and had fun. There was no division between boys and girls. I really liked how the middle schoolers came together so much. 3. The depth of learning going on, the number of options for a smaller school, and the responsibility placed, taught and expected from the middle school students was something that I knew my child would appreciate and could learn from. My child loves learning and wants to be challenged. I knew they would be challenged on many different levels. Things that we have loved since attending: * I love the Harry Potter'esque' houses that each student gets placed in at the beginning of their school year. In a nutshell, this day school serves 3-5 year olds in the heart of downtown Newport, and conveniently allows parents to customize the schedule based on their needs. You can have your kids attend 2, 3, 4 or 5 days a week, and classes are small, with 3 full time teachers that live by EDS's philosophy "Instilling lifelong love of learning... building a foundation for life". It's a super nurturing environment for discovery and exploration, with strong ties to the community. Word of mouth from other parents led us to this school and I have to say it is such an inviting, creative, and wholesome atmosphere. Our daughter gets excited each day she attends and we absolutely love the convenience of drop off because some days it just takes a little longer to get going and Emmanuel Day allows drop off from 8-9am. The teachers keep us up to date on everything and we also enjoy all of the family oriented events they host. It gives us a chance to meet the other parents and get to know the staff better.
