This is my favorite place for natural skincare ingredients. I buy ingredients to make my own blends. I'm particular fond of the cocoa and coffee essential oils. It adds a yummy smell to the lotions and body butter. One purchase which left me unsatisfied, was a small digital scale. I accidentally dropped oil on it, and couldn't use it afterwards. This shop is a lot smaller than I thought. After visiting their website, I thought I'd be walking into a big wholesale store for craft/natural products but there are just a few shelves yet plenty enough to get started on a homemade project or to buy natural goods. I was looking for some soaping supplies and this was one of the only stores in the area that carried sodium hydroxide, molds, cutters and oils. I was disappointed that some of the shelves were a little bare. Best to order it from their site and have it ready for pick up in store. I'm not one to request assistance, but out of all stores, this is the one place that I could benefit from customer service because it was hard to identify things. It kind of looks like you're walking into a chemistry lab, everything is in jars with small labeling, and raw products like butters and oils all look the same. I was the only one in the shop and with just one employee, I was never greeted with a hello or even acknowledged. The tall brunette on duty was also uninformed about how to process refunds or price adjustments. Not helpful for anything in the least. Other than poor service, this place carries great basics for your creative needs, if I'm back it's only due to lack of alternatives. read more

This place is amazing for anyone who wants to make soap. I started making soaps 10 years ago and the only place to get all of this stuff was online. Coop Coco makes everything readily available in one location and their packaging is much nicer than what I usually get online also. Everything is packaged in bottles or plastic containers. Their own house soap is also super cute. They have everything from liquid to solid oils, bases, colourants, essential oils and fragrances as well as additives. It is really a fantastic one stop shop for everything related to soap making. I do find that some of the items that they have are pricey though, but it's the price of convenience. read more

I don't understand why I've been ordering so much stuff online when Coop Coco was right next to me! As others have mentioned, they offer all an amateur soap-maker could want, from scales to emulsifiers and molds. That's not really my jam though, and I was very happy to find that the store carries a huge selection of organic products (shampoo, castille soap etc..), while also selling stuff that is made on the premises. If I were to recommend one thing, it's a good hard look at their oils and butters (shea, cocoa, mango, sold in small sizes, all the way to 2-pound blocks!) , because it's a "polar vortex" out there! This friendly and well-stocked co-operative is run by three soapmakers who founded Savon Populaire. I finally popped in today as I noticed the bulk soaps/shampoos etc. and have been looking for a place to re-fill my house-hold cleaning and basic soap (normally I use Dr. Bronners) bottles. I was truly surprised at the quality, selection and price of the various products they had. Everything from organic Apple Cider Vinegar ($5.79 for a huge bottle!) to home made soaps, scrubs, organic oils (apricot, neem, castor, olive...), lotions, and much more. I was so impressed with the store I visited their website when I got home and learned that they also offer workshops including soap-making ateliers (French only) and their mandate is truly admirable: "We are dedicated to making excellent skin care products available at reasonable prices, while not sacrificing their quality or the environment. We make every effort to keep our packaging to a minimum, offering reusable or recyclable containers when possible. We only use natural products derived from vegetables and plants, creating a biodegradable product that is also environmentally friendly." If you are interested in reducing your waste in the personal hygiene and cleaning products department then I would highly recommend visiting this store. read more

And there is no warning about the delays whatsoever. Placed my order Nov. 12, Dec. 5 - my order is not shipped. There are a few select ready-made products:Savon Populaire soaps,which are not readly stocked in most natural product stores,essential oils,Accacia bubble baths,and a natural make-up line from Germany,and some natural-haired bath and nail brushes, as well as washing soda,and shampoo and conditioner you can buy in bulk. The worst and inefficient customer service you may find in a company. I placed my order on October 2018 (beginning of the month), they took full payment on October 20th and actually on December 2nd, I have not received my order. Not even a call, an email explaining the situation and giving a date for the delivery. I cannot join them by phone for weeks and I have no answer to the several emails I wrote. This is a poor customer service, unreliable and inacceptable, furthermore when you still advertise on your web site it is a 7 days delivery for orders!! read more

If you live in Montreal, visiting the store is fun - they have some cool products that are hard to find. But always call in advance, because they are almost always out of stock of whatever it is you actually need. Most importantly, avoid the online store like the plague - they will charge your credit card, make you wait a month for the shipment, then notify you that half your order is out of stock, without refunding you. It will then take 3 months to get the rest of your items, and all this with no receipts or explanations given. This has happened to me the three times that I ordered from them online. They even charged me for items that they never got back in stock, so I had to call for refunds, months later. Well, it's three strikes and you're out, so I am no longer a customer of theirs. Each time I ordered online and was missing items, customer service had no idea what I had ordered and didn't seem to care either, with no apologies. I requested receipts for what was meant to be refunded and they never provided them even though I have spoke with numerous employees. Don't waste your time with their online store. read more

I took the beginner-level soap making class this weekend, and I was really impressed! The 3-hour class is divided into two parts. The first is theoretical and the second practical. In the second half, everyone makes their own soap using the same base recipe (same proportions of oils and lye), but you get to personalize your soap by choosing your scents, colours, and exfoliants. They really don't skimp in this department: there was a HUGE array of essential oils and different kinds of colourants (from clays to oxides etc) to choose from. The hard part will be waiting until the soap has cured to try it. Camille taught the workshop and was extremely thorough, knowledgeable, and patient. The first half is really useful if you want to go on to make soap at home: Camille clarified the science behind soap-making, explained how to use soap calculators and the two techniques for superfatting, and provided us with lots of useful tips and tricks that it probably would have taken me several soap-making trials to figure out on my own (if ever!). I highly recommend this class! On a side note: I've been to Coop Coco two other times to buy candle-making supplies and was really impressed with the service. I was greeted upon entering both times and the staff were really helpful. The person helping me wasn't sure of the answer to one question, so he encouraged me to look for my other ingredients while he went to look it up and then came and found me and gave me a few possible solutions. This place is amazing! However, I am only giving a three star rating because the service leaves much to be desired! The staff are indifferent and one in particular is downright rude and intimidating. When I politely asked if a certain product was cosmetic grade (as this is all new to me) she basically snorted and said: "well yeah! Everything here is!". Well excuse me! I joined this lovely COOP after many months of debating whether or not belonging to COOP Coco would be advantageous for me. After all, I have little interest in making my own soap. Oh my goodness, why, why why did I not join earlier!?!?! I could have been benefiting from buying my household liquid soap in bulk. As someone who is always looking for ways to cut down on my family's carbon footprint and more specifically our plastic waste, I was thrilled to see that I could buy liquid dish soap and laundry detergent in bulk, refilling my plastic containers ad infinitum. Not only am I making a difference, albeit small, in landfill waste, the bulk liquid soap selection is wonderful and competitively priced: all natural, SLS-free soap, paraben-free, organic, unscented, laundry soap which is ideal for babies.... whatever you are looking for, they have it! Who knows, buying my soap from here may spark an interest in making my own soap and then perhaps I may sign up for one of their many soap-making classes. By the way, COOP Coco membership fees are really reasonable, but it is not necessary to be a member to shop here. read more

I made an order online and never heard back from them. The first time I called to inquire, the representative on the phone said it would be at least 1 week before the order is fulfilled. I called a week later and was told that the order processing personnel are on vacation so it could be another week. I pushed for an estimate so I can modulate my process accordingly and the lady on the phone even refused to give an estimate and even said she does not know when it will be completed. This might be alright for the home formulator that is purchasing their ingredients for a hobby. But, I make products for sale using raw material I purchase from suppliers and cannot wait indefinitely. They could not even give an estimate on when the order would be fulfilled but push back week by week. They are highly unreliable as a source of raw material if you are a professional formulator that that is my only reason for giving them one star. There are many other professional raw material suppliers in Canada that are prompt with order processing, have great customer service and have reliable process times. First time customer and I will definitely be back. Good suppliers are few and far between in Canada and most of the time I resort to ordering from the States or even Europe. I like that there are a lot of organic products and I particularly appreciated the argan oil coming in a blue glass, pump container. It provides easy dispensing without waste and also protects the oil ... and the last thing we need is more plastic. There are some things at Coop that are unusually expensive, such as the lecithin. I've never seen it so expensive anywhere else, so do shop around, but the quality of the oils I got is wonderful. I'm not crazy about the eye dropper container. . the little insert/cap looks really loose and it seems if I did use it as an eye dropper the insert would fall right out along with all the liquid if it's turned, but we'll see. I got some metal tools and spatulas as well which are great. read more
