Hilton was running a status match, which I applied for back in May. Long story short, it took over 60 days to get approved because every time they needed additional documentation, the responses were vague about what they actually wanted. I travel quite a bit, which is why I was doing the match in the first place. Because it took so long, I missed out on having Gold status during travel I had about 30 days after submitting the request. Fast forward to this stay. I'm finally Gold, and one of the benefits is a room upgrade based on availability. At check-in, I specifically asked if an upgrade was available. The lady said yes and started going through the process. Then suddenly it was, "Oh, never mind, you're with a team, so you all have to stay on the same floor." Apparently I missed that part in the fine print. An upgrade was available, but because we were traveling with a team, I couldn't have it. She wasn't willing to budge. So that definitely left me wondering what the point of having status is if the benefits don't apply when they're actually available. Then we get to the room. The mini fridge was leaking water all over the floor and some of the drawers were broken. I called the front desk and they agreed to move us. When I went back downstairs, unfortunately I ended up dealing with the same person who checked me in. Maybe she was just having a bad day, but the attitude wasn't great. I understand everyone has bad days, but guests shouldn't have to feel like they're inconveniencing someone when they're simply trying to get a room issue fixed. Our family chose to stay at your hotel and spend our money here. I didn't get anyone's name because I don't think this should be about calling out one employee by name. Leadership should have a good sense of what's happening at their property. Good, bad or ugly, if they don't know, that's part of the problem too. The positive: the location is good and the surrounding area is convenient. His behavior left us wondering whether LGBTQ+ guests were openly accepted, and the interaction felt discriminatory. At one point, I even thought he had canceled our reservation. We booked a hotel stay, not a lecture. Thankfully, Jeff, the manager, was a breath of fresh air. He helped explain Brian's confusion and made us feel welcome. Everyone else was amazing, too. When did this start happening. Isn't it standard hotel procedure to refresh the room daily? 2) They slid my invoice under the room door very early in the morning (it was there when I woke up at 5:45am) on checkout day. I am not a fan of having my personal information slid under a door. All it takes is a tiny bit of human error and then someone has bits a pieces of my personal info and certainly enough to start charging items to the room. And my biggest issue of all ... 3) The "fitness center" is a complete joke and cannot be referred to as a fitness center. I don't expect very much out of hotel fitness centers, but this was a storage closet with 2 ellipticals, 2 treadmills and a dumbbell rack squeezed into a room the size of a closet. There wasn't even enough space to get down and do some push ups or sit ups. It's a complete slap in the face to anyone who books there and wants to get in a workout. I actually had to go seek out a gym in the area, and pay them, in order to get my workout in when I should have been able to do that at the hotel since they advertise a "fitness center." If working out is a priority to you, completely avoid this hotel.

So of course it took forever to get my hair wet enough to wash and forever to get the shampoo out of my hair. This is close to one of the coldest showers I've ever had to take - including the time we lost our hot water heat at our house. There are just some basics that a hotel should be able to provide. Homewood Suites Urbandale Due to an issue with the Hilton in…read moreUrbandale, we were fortunate enough to discover this place, enjoy a change of scenery, and feel truly welcome. The suites are excellent and very comfortable. The only thing I would suggest is improving the breakfast service. Since the suites are fully equipped, guests don't have the option of bringing breakfast back to their suite. Otherwise, if I ever return to Des Moines, I would stay here. I also want to express my gratitude to two people at the hotel who served us professionally and made us feel welcome. Especially Tara, who, after we had been driving for four hours and were eager to reach our destination, was told by the Hilton that I didn't have a reservation there. Tara, Homewood, very kindly and patiently made the reservation while we continued on our way to Des Moines. That demonstrates professionalism and excellent customer service. I hope this hotel recognizes her character and her competence in what she does. Krissa and Brenna were unhelpful, gave conflicting information, and spoke negatively about each other. The hot tub never worked. As Latina LGBTQ+ guests with disabilities, we felt singled out, unsafe, and unwelcome. While we cannot know why we were treated this way, I would not recommend this hotel.
