Not until yesterday. There are about two dozen booths. There was a food truck! A couple vendors had fresh produce, including heirloom garlic bulbs & scapes. I was hoping for more produce sellers, but as interest increases, that'll happen, right? You might not be able to get a week's worth of fruits & veggies here but they have a lot of good stuff. The rest of the booths had relatively more shelf-stable wares such as fresh salsa, baked goods, dairy products, honey, spices & candles. Leslie Science Center had a booth. A woman had brought the screech owl that has been rehabbed but cannot be released back into the wild. Nice to see that little guy close up. Definitely worth a stop on the way home from work!

I visited this…read moresmall but mighty market for the first time in March, and I was impressed by the variety of vendors and products. The indoor market is also at Pittsfield Township Hall, but the indoor market is set up inside, in Morris Hall. There was a chef demonstration giving away samples (apple pancakes and kale/blueberry smoothies) in the lobby when I entered. In the actual market, there were about a dozen vendors offering fresh produce and prepared goods. Especially since it was early March, I was impressed with the variety of fresh fruits and veggies - including beets, carrots, swiss chard, garlic, spinach, apples, onions, frozen blueberries. Eggs, honey, cupcakes, kettle corn, bread, and pie were also available. There was even a vendor selling fresh pasta. Two vendors also sold homemade products - cutting boards and organic lotion and bath bombs, etc. Many offered yummy samples- including cheese and kettle corn. In addition to the vendors, there was a craft table and an entertainer making balloon animals. A number of kids were singing with a guitarist as well. The market felt lively and active, but not overcrowded, and it was not difficult to shop even with all this happening. I can't wait to come back for the outdoor markets!

First off, we went on a Friday early evening the week the strawberries were ready for picking and it was PLENTIFUL. So many berries. My family and I all agreed that we would only be picking enough to eat at home and that's it. No jamming, canning, freezing, etc. Yet the berries were so perfect, so ripe and beautiful we somehow picked a full tray each, even in the 90 degree, 60% humidity heat. NO REGRET! It's still super easy to go here. Drive up, grab your tray, pick your berries, drive back and get them weighed (there's stall with mixes for baked goods, jams, and more plus bottled beverages if the heat is getting to you). I can't remember exactly but it shook out to be around 2.59 a pound I believe (but don't quote me on that) and I got $23 dollars worth. Now I have nearly 9lbs of strawberries in my fridge for snacking, baking, and more. But don't expect jam this year. I haven't the energy for that!

Pack sandwiches & have a picnic after! Pro tip: check the website, their Facebook page, or call them every year to see how the crop is doing and when it will be ready for picking. If you wait too long you'll miss out because they get picked pretty quickly.

Usually I'm running around Saturday mornings so it's nice to be able to hit a farmer's market later in the day and during the week. They have a nice mix of different produce as well as prepared products. It's great to get Corridor Sausage in my own backyard, love Mindo chocolate from Dexter and I'm thrilled to see them there every week. If I'm feeling like a snack Pilar's Tamales or Good Times Kettle Corn really hit the spot. The Brinary, Seedling (who I used to buy from when I lived in Chicago in their markets), and the Zingerman's creamery are all favorites. Not to mention all the beautiful fresh fruits and veggies. YES. Also--the parking lot rules. If it's too hot to bike or walk it's really nice to roll up and easily find a parking spot without having to pay a meter. It shouldn't matter but it totally does. The Saturday and Wednesday markets in Kerrytown are awesome but I for a few small items I love coming here. Popping in for a tasty eat at the Roadhouse doesn't hurt either! ;)

What a find! This market is the perfect compliment to the Ann Arbor Farmers' Market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Instead, it's in the late afternoon / early evening, which is a nice change, and has an easy location good for parking and on the west side of town. The market hosts about 20 local Michigan vendors, and Zingerman's is usually always outside sampling some kind of yummy goodness. There's a nice selection of fruits, veggies and flowers. I usually hit up this market every Thursday on my way home from work and almost never leave empty-handed. Rain or shine, the market is there.

They have a nice selection of plants, herbs and vegetables. One big thing I did notice this year was that they dropped the cell size of the vegetable saplings from 4 to 3 but the price stayed the same $1.99. A lot of places are still charging the same price for a 4 cell so keep that in mind. The plants looked really healthy this year so far. I love their Salad Bowls. I always pick up 2 or 3. It's great having access to fresh lettuce everyday. I also came looking for a couple Lemon Cypress trees. Sadly they don't carry them so that was a bit of a disappointment. We did leave with some herbs and vegetable plants though. TIP: Get here early in the season... The plants that they have in the first week or two of opening are a great deal for their size, a large 4" tomato plant will cost you less than $3.

The Canton Farmers Market has long been my favorite in metro-Detroit. It is not the biggest or…read morebrightest or shiniest, but it is - in my opinion the best. First, the market is in a super suburban development that is on the edge of "country", as in drive a quarter mile north, south, or west, and you are there. This section of Canton, Cherry Hill Village, was once a huge sweet corn growing area, so the country roots aren't that deep. The market is in public property that includes several civic buildings showcasing the area's rural history. The buildings also offer respite from rain, shade, and porches for live music! Second, solid parking for the size of the market. Though the parking is in grass, it is well set up and marked. When the market is busy, they often have volunteers directing traffic. And there are lots of volunteers at this market, so make that three. There is always a table of master gardeners to offer advice for home planting, free seeds, and perennial swaps. Other volunteers keep things tidy and help those who are looking for something specific or need help. Finally, the vendors - there is a large fruit seller and a large vegetable seller. Of course, each has some cross over, but both are fairly local and have large, diverse varieties. The vegetable seller also sells CSA boxes that you prepay and pick up. In addition to these two, there are a few others that fill in fruit and vegetable gaps. One usually has fresh eggs, but get there early before they run out. The Cheese People are there offering delicious samples of a wide variety of Michigan made cheeses. The food vendors are rounded out by chips and salsa, coffee, cheesecakes, pasta, baked goods -- all local. There are also some non-food sellers with soap, crafts, and art. I know it doesn't sound big, but it is big enough. This is my first grocery stop of the week. I round out my fresh food here with items from a butcher and a grocery store, but when in season, always here first.

Be sure to follow the tips of where the thickest area if berries are. A couple of tips: 1. Bring mosquito repellent as they can be fierce. 2. Bring sunscreen 3. Blueberries don't just grow on the bush's periphery...spread the branches apart and behold plenty of big, fat berries that have escaped picking. 4. A half bucket is about 9 cups. 4 cups is what you need for one Blueberry pie.

This year I picked blueberries at the Dexter Blueberry Farm twice! I wasn't too sure what to expect…read moreon my first trip but it was such a wonderful experience. When you arrive there is plenty of parking. You will need something to take your blue berries home in. I recommend bringing a pail. They have pails there to borrow, but you still need a way to take them home, so it makes more sense to bring your own. They will weigh your pail before you begin picking and then you can head out. It's very organized and easy to navigate. Pick as many berries as your heart desires. And then then You take your harvest to be weighed. They take off the weight of your pail before the berries and you pay accordingly. It's soooo much more affordable than buying blueberries at the store. They are delicious and it's a great experience!
