Both the ones on my plate and the ones on the side were swimming in grease - saturated with butter. Having lost most of my appetite, the waiter (who seemed to find the whole thing funny and was very patronizing toward me) brought a flower pot full of chips as consolation. My friend is gf and they brought out a table of allergies v dishes which was very helpful, they also offered to (and made) her a burger without a bun. She and my other friend who had a burger weren't overall that thrilled with them though. My chilli bowl was unfortunately not good - very dry and no real spice to it. It was basically cooked mince with plain rice. This is touted as one of their classic dishes so they need to review the recipe/preparation (I note another reviewer had a much better experience 2 years ago). There was hardly anyone in, which was surprising - my guess is that, if it was based one street over on Bold, it would've been rammed. A music venue at night, the food here is really quite delicious. There are small plates and starters, burgers, massive bowls of chilli, fried chicken and biscuits etc. We went for a chilli dog each, triple fried chips, and mac & cheese (with bacon). Now this was proper chilli, with hunks of beef in a rich spicy sauce, and the meat was super soft. The pairing with the hot dog was perfect. And with the mac & cheese? Even better. Triple fried chips produced plenty of crispy edges, with just the right amount of seasoning. Service was really friendly and laid back, giving just the atmosphere we needed to relax after the train journey in and before exploring the city further.

After spotting this recent newcomer to the Liverpool food scene on Twitter (where else?) I instantly knew I had to go. Run by the same folk behind new favourite Motel and the controversially named Death Row Diner, there are plenty of similarities between the venues, but just enough differences to stop you from ever getting tired. Inside is relatively small for something I can see booming once word really gets out; there's bench seating for eight x 4, though you could certainly fit more on if you were all pals, and then some window seats at the side. The decor is fun and eye catching, with window decals announcing that "everyone loves fried chicken" and promoting their corffee & doughnuts morning deal (refills on filter coffee and one of their homemade doughnuts, if you're interested). The menu is simple - chicken, with a few vegetable based options, and a clean and simple drinks list. Very pleasing to the eye. You plonk yourself down, deliberate over what to order, then head to the bar. We both had a coke to drink, but I also tried a blackberry collins, which was just delicious. Sweet with a gin kick, served long, it was a real thirst quencher as well as a little alcoholic treat. They do a range of these, including mango and strawberry flavour, and only set you back £5. Okay, and now for the good stuff - what we ate. The other half went for the Dead Man's Fingers; chicken breast, coated in tangy buffalo sauce, served with blue cheese dip. Simple but so satisfying. We also shared some cauliflower florets which were doused in the same sauce, and salt & pepper fries with gravy. And I mean proper chip shop gravy. Delicious. I just had to go for the Chicken, Bacon & Waffle with habanero hot sauce - the latter of which looked not alike something from Ghostbusters due to the green! The three pieces of plump, fried chicken were amazingly moist and tender, and really different from the plainer breast from the other plate. Great to see some actual differentiation in taste. The spicy sauce cut through the saltiness of the chicken and bacon, and the sweet waffle just completed the perfect combo of salty, sweet and spicy. The 'kitchen' is basically one man just doing his thing, so you get to hear the magic of the fryer throughout your meal and see the food keep getting served up. Oh, and everything is served in tin foil plates - just to add to that naughty feeling you're already getting. Go. And take me with you.
