I have been a patient of Gustavo Martinez DDS for the four years we have lived in Port Charlotte. The quality of care was extraordinary from the moment I walked in the door until the moment I left. The front desk personnel welcomed me and was on top of my insurance, getting me the best bang for my buck. Adie , Dr. Martinez's assistant, and Dr. Martinez handled my crowns with compassion, patience and professionalism. Dr Martinez not only was pain free but explained all my options. I should've read the reviews before I made an appointment. I am so disappointed. I arrived for my 8am appointment and after confirming my insurance prior and they made me wait 40 minutes for them to make calls to my insurance company because they were unsure about it.. He told me there would be an extra xray fee of $40 but then said $80. I ended up walking out because they were so unorganized and it was 8:50 by the time I walked out. Back in February of 2025 I had a cleaning and was charged for a fluoride treatment that I didn't have done. I called the office in March and was told I would be reimbursed. It's now March 2026 and after many calls I still haven't been reimbursed. Twice they said they were going to send me a check. Now they want to credit it to a card I don't have anymore so they want me to get a letter from the credit card company stating I don't have that card anymore. On September 16th, 2025, I went to see Dr. Gustavo Martinez at Coast Dental Punta Gorda, and he recommended for me to do a deep cleaning ($2544) and a crown and root canal (both $2318). I had a deep clean and root canal that day, and a temporary tooth was placed. On September 23rd, 2025, I had my crown done. By October 13th, the crown started loosening up, and by the 27th, it had completely fallen off. I'd like to note that I had gotten an appointment on the 14th and was told that nothing could be done about my loose crown until it had completely fallen off. On the same day, Dr. Martinez twisted it back in and glued it back with a material similar to cement. I felt extreme pain after this procedure and went back on the 4th of November because an abscess formed on my gums near the infected tooth. He didn't examine my tooth or abscess; he just had his assistant prescribe me Amoxicillin for the infection. He stated that if I couldn't stand the pain or the infection, or if the crown fell out again, I would have to get an implant ($9200). He also said that I got the infection because there was "food stuck in my teeth". That day, I realized I couldn't trust them anymore, so I called for a second opinion. I had my appointment with Dr. Annie Smith at Wellen Family Dental on November 6th, 2025. At the consultation, she recommended an extraction of the work Dr. Martinez had done, but I had to wait until November 21st, 2025, to get my abscess removed because we had to wait for my partial denture to arrive. On the 21st, after she had extracted Dr. Martinez's work, the tooth showed how poorly he put a metal piece (which had the thickness of a paper clip) between the crown and into my root. The twisting mechanism he used caused a hole in my root and caused the initial infection and abscess, which he originally stated was caused by food getting stuck in my teeth. Over the past two months, I became very sick and ended up in the ER on November 26, 2025. For the two treatments, Coast Dental charged me $4961.00, and then Allstate Health Solutions an additional $2233.00. I had also contacted the office manager of the Punta Gorda Coast Dental location about a month ago many times to find a solution for this experience, but nobody has contacted me back. Evertime I leave this office I pay for my floride.That is okay. Last visit while siting in the chair, they pointed out that I needed to pay for my floride.I signed to pay for it. I gave them my card as I was leaving the office. Next thing you know I get a bill from them. I go in and they told me I owed for the fluoride.I said no I payed, they said no ypu paid 18.00 for a tube of toothpaste!!! Long story short,they tried to get an extra 35.00 from me for the fluoride. A 15 year old crown fell off. I got a quick apt to resolve that and to become a regular patient. I was given 2 types of xrays and told I need deep cleaning. I asked about the crown: it had to be redone (build up and impression), another crown needed to be replaced, and a cavity needed filling. The dentist didn't explain any of this (other than "it broke" (crown or tooth?) to me and left the room before I could ask for details. I saw another dentist who explained that the crown could be recemented and what my expectations should be. It's back in, and I found a dentist I can recommend with 5 stars. I've had unnecessary dental work done in the past. There is a difference between preventative and precautionary care. The staff seemed competent and the front desk was helpful & pleasant: that is the basis for the 2 stars. I prefer a family style dentist and am driving 4 times as far for that experience. read more

The hygienist was very good on my first visit but I have never had an interaction with the dentist until recently. They are not professional and in fact very rude. They would not re-cement a crown I had even though I was their patient. They told me to go back to the other costal dental place in North Port where I had it done 2 years ago. They wasted 1 hour that I can never get back but the least I can do is spread the word on how TERRIBLE they are to their patients. Coast was the closest place 'in network' for my crappy insurance plan. I never researched them, as I should have. I called over two months ago for a cleaning. Then, a couple days prior to this appointment that I've waited for, I get a call to confirm I made sure to clarify not only a new patient visit, but a cleaning.... since common sense isn't so common anymore. She responded 'I can't guarantee that, we only have one hygienist... there may be a cancellation that day! We would then be able to give you a cleaning... we could still give you X-rays....' ???? Then today my husband & I had appts; the office called & asked us to come early at 2x&2:40. We arrived at 1:50 checked in & provided insurance cards. This place is a complete scam. I used to do Anesthesia/surgery assistant for a Periodontist. I had already called my insurance, so I KNEW what was covered and my cost before going. They come out with a treatment plan costing several, several thousand dollars yet I did not have a single cavity. Lied and said I had an infection and needed deep cleaning, which 1. I saw the xrays-no infection and 2. You NEVER do a scaling or deep cleaning on an infected person as it can lead to infection in the heart. I reported them to BBB for Medicare fraud. The dental hygienist here is a FRAUD! I am new to the area and went to this office to get a regular teeth cleaning that is covered by my husband's insurance. After looking at my teeth, the hygienist told me that I had periodontal disease and that I needed a special cleaning that cost $1,500 (out of pocket)!!! [Note: she had already charged me $200 for an oral cancer screening that most dental office's do for free.] I was completely distraught and almost in tears... being told that I had periodontal disease. I have never been told that in my life (and I am over 50)! I told her that I was not prepared to pay $1,500 and asked if I could just get the regular cleaning that is covered by my husband's insurance. She refused. I then asked to speak to the dentist. He came in and looked at my teeth and said they looked fine. Of course, I was thrilled to know that I didn't have periodontal disease but so upset that the hygienist lied to me. There was no way that I was going to let her work on my teeth. I left. I called my sister-in-law, who is also a dental hygienist (but unfortunately lives across the country from me). She shared with me that some hygienist work on commission. I guess since I came in wearing nice diamond jewelry (and maybe because I am english speaking) the fraudulent hygienist thought she could take advantage of me. I just recently went to a different dental office and they told me that my teeth and gums are in great condition and gave me a regular teeth cleaning without any issues. They changed my appointment twice. On the day of my appointment i received a text 2 hours before it saying the time was 1:30pm but my appt had been scheduled for 2:10pm. I adjusted my plans and showed up at 1:25pm only to sit and wait for 40 minutes while 10 other people walked in for appointments and not one of us were take back to see the dentist. We went to another doctor got x-rays and a second opinion and none of the work he said we needed to get done is necessary. I went in for a basic cleaning X Ray's and advised them that I was on Medicare and fixed income. They started out with a $200 co-pay so I called my provider and got this resolved and got told I had to spend $23 more for x rays. According to BCBS all this was covered but they did more extensive X rays..Ray's... I told them fine I just want my teeth cleaned. The only reason I was here was to get them cleaned and my prior dentist of 7 years who I was happy with didn't take insurance.. with that said I was told that the would not do a basic cleaning like I had for the past ? 40 plus years. I had to have a very special cleaning that involved antibiotics and if I didn't pay $1800 I couldn't get my teeth cleaned. I only have 1 filling in my mouth it was changed 4 years ago. I now need 4 fillings replaced .. Needless to say I left. BEWARE! This is like a having your car well maintained for years by a local shop and then going to the auto dealer for a oil change and getting a list of $3000 worth of work the car needs done? I had an appointment scheduled as a new patient with a coupon for free Xrays and a super discounted cleaning. I arrived on time and was seen 20 minutes late. They did a full Panorex and another 18, yes 18 xrays, I probably absorbed enough radiation to be the Incredible Hulk and the tech told me that it was low radiation,,,,LIE. So after a Zoom call with the dentist, I waited another 30 minutes to be seen and instead got the attempted Up sell. My initial visit of $23 was now over $450. I sat in that waiting room, two dental chairs, a ton or xrays and never had my teeth cleaned. This place is highway robbery and has the feel of a car salesman. Stay away from this one. My biggest complaint is not being able to decide what I need rather then "this is what we do, no negotiating". Case and point...I need a tooth (molar) removed, they insist I need Bone restructure to the tune of 547.00. Ouch...$741.00 to have 1 tooth removed. Not easy, but thankfully we found Dr. Alfred Choi and his staff here at Coast Dental in Punta Gorda. Everyone is fabulous. Caring, kind and professional. Worked with us to help us choose the best dental plan or insurance for us! Not what plan worked best for them like our last dentist. I would give them 10 stars if I could. One of the worst dental offices I have experienced. Very unprofessional, rude and incompetent staff. They are incapable of empathy toward handicapped people. Even though they are the only office that takes our insurance, we will gladly pay for thoughtful people who care about their patients. The attitudes of the staff are absolutely horrible. This type of behavior comes from the top. We finally left the office even before meeting the dentist. This is my review in regards to the Coast Dental in Punta Gorda, Florida. I took my husband there and they gave us a copay quote of almost $200. Fortunately, I keep a list from my insurance company of patient responsibility amounts (we have HMO coverage), I had them fix it immediately. I scheduled the appointment several weeks in advance, specifying that my husband was a new patient and needed a cleaning... the hygenist wasn't even there!!! Now they say we need to come back at the end of December for his cleaning. The rooms are dirty and very small - the room my husband was in, the baseboards were almost black with built up dirt/dust and the waiting room chairs were ripped... it's really hard to feel you are in a sanitary environment if they don't care about general housekeeping. We arrived 30 minutes in advance, and still waited nearly an hour for him to be seen... the waiting room was empty, just us! In addition, when I visited the Coast Dental Facebook, I discovered they do not have a review section on there, but they do have a section where you can make visitor posts... I wrote the same as above to them a week ago, they never commented on it as they had the 'good' reviews. I went back to look at it, thinking maybe I just didn't receive an alert... It had been DELETED! I will be reporting them to the BBB, they are scamming people into thinking their practice is ethical, and it's completely the opposite. This is, by every measure, the worst dental practice I've ever experienced. The staff seems inept. They understated my insurance benefits and were quick to charge my credit card for their "services based on my insurance coverage". I went in for an extraction and bridge. They started to extract my teeth and noticed they forgot to check my bridge before they started the extraction! The maker made the wrong teeth in the bridge! I was in such pain later that day, I had to have emergency oral surgery at a different practice the next morning. Then I went back in 2 more times before they finally got the bridge correct! Great experience. I hadn't been to a dentist in years. Fear of pain I guess. After exam and X-rays I met with dr Choi. I needed several extractions and bone grafts. Dr Choi explained the procedure and what to expect and I scheduled my appointment. Dreaded this day but kept the appointment. I was shocked. I didn't feel any pain at all. I was sore for a few days but nothing a couple of Advill didn't fix. Dr Choi and his entire staff exceeded my expectations and they now have another patient for life. Was hoping this Dental practice would be our permanent one as it is so close to our new home in Burnt Store Isles. The experience however was probably the worst I've ever encountered. My appt was at 9:40 am, then it was changed the night before to 10:00 am via e-mail. Then when I arrived, they said I needed x-rays, which I didn't as I had sent them in from my previous dentist. They finally found them and, after some more computer delays, I finally went back around 10:30 am. The person I saw said I needed new x-rays because mine were dated 2017. I showed her my copy of the x-rays showing a 2020 date and come to find out they had loaded someone else's x-rays on my record. They finally got it straight and the office manager was very apologetic. The dentist came in and really didn't poke around my mouth as is typical but said he recommended two crowns on two discolored teeth. At 11:05, and still no Hygienist for my cleaning in sight, I got out of the chair and left. Terrible experience all around and will be finding another dentist. read more

They told me my insurance wouldn't cover the "type of cleaning" I needed, without actually checking the code with my insurance, and made me pay. I then contacted my insurance who filed a grievance. They stated it was illegal for them to charge me as they obviously did not run the code. My insurance then paid them, and told them to refund me. I have been waiting for my refund for over a year. I have called the office, been in the office, called "corporate" which doesn't really exist, and spoken with online chat. The office tells me they can not refund me I have to go to corporate. I call the number and the automated system says "for refunds, contact your local office." I've called the 800 numbers and have spoken with online chat who all say, "we are escalating the issue and you will be called within 48 hours." I've never ONCE been called, yet I've called nearly every month for a year and get the same response each time. They not only took my money, they took insurance money as well, and now refuse to refund me although "the refund is in the system and just needs to be released." Apparently no one in the entire company has the ability to "release" it though. Shame on me for trusting them when they told me my "type of cleaning needed" was not covered, but shame on them for double dipping with my money as well as the insurance money. I will never recommend this company, and I will continue to let everyone know the type of company they are. read more
