He coached me last summer with open water swimming techniques. Excellent, patient instructor for all levels of swimming!

When I started working with swim start, I was terrified of the deep end and struggled to even imagine myself swimming confidently.

We booked our first lesson after pandemic for my daughters on that snow storm day, Vancouver traffic was a mass, the road to that Port Coquitlam pool was unreachable, there's a narrow curvy and very steep road leading to that pool, and cars and trucks are sliding down hill. Propel must known that since it's their location, but there was NO way to contact Propel or the instructor throughout the day. When they finally get back to me many days later they said they're just a platform, so they don't care about anything, students and instructor safety are not their concern, as long as they're getting their share of the fee. Very disappointed, my first time and last time.

Having to have my son enrolled in community group swim lesson before, we tried twice, the progress just was not there. The instructor has too big of a group to attend to and it was difficult for young kids to truly learn/progress in their swim. Even before the lesson started, the email communication received with all the instruction and direction was very well written. The instructor was prompt to start the lesson and was very attentive to the needs of those who are learning. (I showed up early with my son so I was observing the person prior to my son's lesson). My son is already asking when he will go back to swim lesson again, now thAt is truly a positive sign that my son enjoyed it n wants to be back! We are signing up for more lessons!

The price is quite steep at $75/month. The price also varies depending on the type of membership (corporate, association etc). For a non-profit organization I think the price should be the same for everyone. Also, they charge a joiner fee and 1 month membership fee to cancel. I don't think they should charge a cancellation fee - things happen in life and you shouldn't be penalized for moving or changing jobs. The facility itself has options - there is a pool, showers, fitness centre, women's fitness area and 2 exercise rooms for classes. It is a very busy and well used location. I haven't tried the personal trainers, but have observed them training other people. They seem very knowledgeable and pay a lot of attention to the people they are training. If you do decide to come here and can afford it, it looks like it would be worth it. Personally, I didn't enjoy any of the classes. They are very full (30-40) people (except for spin and a few other classes that have equipment limits - still at least 15 people though). People also come late. This makes it very hard for the instructor because they don't know what to expect. The classes are good for beginners, but don't always match the description. Some of the instructors aren't open to feedback and will suggest taking another class if you provide feedback. The gym equipment is decent but not as good as a newer Steve Nash. They have most of the things you need but no kettle bells. In summary, the location is excellent and the centre has options. Because of this, it is VERY busy. The crowd here is your standard community centre crowd, so it's not intimidating and everyone is friendly.

It is a bit further for me,living in Kits, but well worth it. With Covid around the local city gyms have huge line ups,not here and Y.W.C.A tries to schedule properly. I tried Fitness World in KIts and was left feeling very unappreciated and Ron Z on 1st ave ,after I called seems to be a rude bully place. I now happily either take 10 minute bus ride D.T or drive.

Aside from lap swimmers, the leisure side of the pool complex was a mix of preschool-aged kids and retirees soaking in the large jacuzzi. There is a shallow and large wading pool for kids to play, a lazy river with a quieter small pool in the center, and then a large hot tub. The jacuzzi and wading pools have a stairs as well as a gently sloped ramp for entry, which is an inclusive way of building a pool as well as fun for the kids. There are a few toys available (balls, pool noodles) and plenty of life jackets for the kids. There are a good number of lifeguards who seemed reasonable. I didn't use them, but there is also a steam room and a sauna. Large locker rooms have plenty of lockers, changing rooms, shower space, sinks, and toilets. Soap is provided but no other products (shampoo, lotion).

The facility has a large main pool that is sometimes partitioned to allow one end to offer laps and the other end to offer swimming lessons. Without the partition, you would have a full length pool. Adjacent to the main pool is a kid's pool with lots of ramps and stairs to allow entry into the water. The water is shallow enough to allow most kids to keep their heads above water. There are cannons and sprinklers for kids to interact with. Additionally, there is a section of the pool that has a gentle current that propels kids along in a large circular loop. The pool offers pool noodles and some toys for visitors. There is even a large hot-tub section next to the kid's pool for people to soak their aching joints. Also, there are diving boards of various heights, a steam room and an outdoor pool. What I like most about Hillcrest Aquatic Centre is that there are large changing rooms available for families with kids to change in. These same rooms can also be used by bashful types who don't like people staring at their twigs and berries. One complaint I have, however, is that the water coming out of the showers is way too hot! I have been scalded on several occasions! Essentially, Hillcrest Aquatic Centre has something for everyone.
