I went to Niyama on week nights almost 4 days a week this past summer when I was living in the suburbs. Almost all of the teachers I had on week nights were amazing, kind, patient and everything a good yoga teacher should be. The studio is clean, inexpensive (especially if you're a student) and relaxing. If my rating were based on the weeknight classes only, my rating would be much higher. I made the mistake, however, of attending a few of Mac's classes on the weekends. Mac owns the studio- and therefore, I thought it would be a great experience since I loved the studio so. How wrong I was. Upon the first class I attended Mac made it a point to humiliate a student in class because he wasn't doing a backbend correctly. I decided to write it off as a fluke and attended her class again the following weekend. I realized that it was not a fluke. Mac was obnoxiously phony throughout the entire class and brought a condescending teaching style, constantly showering her students with demeaning comments instead of the uplifting inspirational attitude that you so often find in yoga. The final time I visited Niyama, I made the mistake of not checking the schedule beforehand and Mac was unfortunately teaching. During a posture that I find very difficult, Mac came up to me and said (loud enough for everyone to hear) that I should be in the back of the room because I clearly didn't know what I was doing. When I said that there was no room, she rolled her eyes and snapped "There's plenty of room!" I was furious and humiliated! Though I loved so many of the other teachers I refused to go back after that and support a studio owned by a person like this. When I decide to go to yoga I expect a comforting and uplifting experience led by teachers who foster a sense of support and community. When I told my story to a few other students I realized I was not alone in my sentiments. Others told me of similar situations they had either experienced or witnessed. Mac has no business owning a yoga studio and treating her students this way. If you do decide to attend Niyama- opt for a class taught by any of the other teachers, unless you want to leave feeling badly about yourself and your practice.

She quickly assesses the abilities and needs of each new student, then guides them on individualized paths of learning and self discovery. Her classes are always therapeutic--never about driving students to attain some arbitrary or out-of-reach goal. Perhaps even more amazing is that she accomplishes so much of this personalized instruction through the live Zoom classes she offers almost every day of the week. The classes are small-group, allowing for chats before and after the session. For students who are seeking even more customized lessons, Shana offers one-on-one sessions in person. She has helped me address numerous issues related to mobility, posture, and pain over the past few years. I can't recommend her highly enough.

Ever. At yoga of all places?!? I arrived early to figure a log in issue, so I could sign up online. I had not been able to log into my account after attempting several times at home and also there. In front of the class she stated that there was something wrong with me, and not the computer. I'm tech savvy, it was the archaic website. Simply put -- I was there for yoga, not to be berated. Central Street Yoga is not a place to practice yoga if the owner does not care about exercising kindness to those who support her business, or anyone for that matter. This attitude exemplifies everything yoga is not. Unless she's in a good mood or likes you, her mission below is not in practice. Kindness wins every time. The world gets better when these small things are handled with grace, not hostility. Namaste. "Our mission is to provide an environment for you to explore inner peace, creative expression, and to cultivate a deeper sense of you through yoga, meditation, and mindfulness."

My first experience with Tony was awesome and unlike any other massage experience I've had! This visit exceeded my last one! The massage area is really cool and eclectic with every square inch covered with messages, chimes, lights, sounds that call in good energy into the space. It would be hard to imagine not feeling immediately calm in the space. We sat down to chat briefly before my service and I was invited to pull a tarot card and read about its meaning before we began. It resonated with my current situation. My actual massage experience was multi-faceted and multi-modal. Tony guided some parts with a guided meditation, and at some points assisted breath work for deeper releases. I honestly don't want to spill the beans with all of the special treats that come along in this massage experience so that other therapists aren't tempted to co-opt the approach! I think the benefit of Tony operating out of his own facility is that he can control how and what he offers in his service offerings without having to follow a cookie cutter approach for exactly the same thing for every customer! Definitely recommend trying his services and I will return!
