M&S Simply Food at Brighton Station is one of the few shops inside the station concourse, it is…read moreprobably one of the better places in the station to grab some to-go food and drinks ahead of a train journey, with rivals Superdrug and WHSmith barely having a food selection, and PRET being the only other place which sells food, but even then they sell a limited menu compared to other stores. This is pretty different from other M&S Simply Food stores as it is a travel store, they specialise in to go food and drinks at really high prices, as I recall a meal deal cost around £5 which is £1.50 more than a regular store, an increase of around 42.8%. I understand travel stores can cost more because of the location, but this seems to just take it a little step further, knowing there is little competition elsewhere in the station and it is from the Marks and Spencer brand, which has a reputation for being towards the higher-end scale for food anyway. The gluten-free selection was awful, they didn't have any wraps or pasta pots which stores usually have, they had two varieties of sandwiches, even then this is quite poor for a Marks and Spencer store, who have much more to choose from. I personally have a strong hate for seeded bread, which is why it frustrates me to see so many places only offering gluten-free sandwiches on seeded bread, and this location is sadly no different. A useful store, but they really do need to work on making pricing much more reasonable and stock of gluten-free items, which Marks and Spencer are usually pretty good here, so this branch is pretty rare in that sense. 2*

They're open til 11pm every day except Sunday and also sell staples like bread, milk, yoghurt, fruit and juice. Of course, Marks and Spencer is always slightly more expensive than other grocery stores but the food is usually of such good quality it makes up for the extra pennies. This has got to be the biggests supermarket (or is it hypermarket) I have ever been in. If you…read moresimply want to do a week's grocery shopping you can probably ignore half the store as it's dedicated to George clothing and homewares as well as big TV & audio section. There's also a huge pharmacy area and huge rows of seasonal items. The place resembles a warhouse as goods are stacked so high. It's usually busy when I've been but seems less so on a Thursday at about 9pm. As I say there is a huge clothing section so of you see something you like in a smaller ASDA, but they don't have your size chances are you can find it here. There's a section for Polish (I think) foods but not a huge amount. I'm not sure that there's a greatly wider choice than a usual ASDA - just more of them so chances of empty shelves are greatly reduced. There seems to be bread constantly reduced here but I've not noticed many other end of shelf life reductions. There is always staff busying around stacking shelves and often driving some kind of platform or other. There are a huge number of tills too which is a bonus. There's a customer service desk but strangely only ever one person operating it for such a big store.

It seems to be this second point that balances out the first. It strikes me, that if you have the relatives, or some friends coming round for diner, but can't cook and need to give the impression you can, then Cook is the place to run to. Everything looks plausably home made, in the same way that some cookery books give you images of nice looking food that's not too expensive or difficult to make luring you into attempting the dish yourself. You soon find out however, that the meal in the book looked so tasty because its sitting on a granite work surface in an ornate bowl that has never even seen the inside of a sink, and has about 500 watts of light illuminating it. Style over substance.... But at least Cook has the substance, just not to the degree the price asks for if you ask me.

It's frozen food for people in hurry but it's high quality and very, very tasty. I really think the various curries they do are top notch and prefer them to a takeaway. For £6.99 or thereabouts you get a very delicious dish for two and hearty portions they are. Also you can bag party nibbles and desserts to die for. Basically, if you so wish, you can pass this stuff off as your own. There's also a branch in Lewes. Not cheap, but good value. This is the good stuff.
