For groceries, though, it's got a lot to offer. Fruit and veg are of good quality and usually well-stocked. They have two 'car trolleys' which amuse small (and big) kids greatly, and make the shopping trip easier with children who are too big for the trolley seats but too small to walk all the way around without whining. And yes, we did see my sister's neighbors there and apparently it is where people go to in oxford on a sunny sunday afternoon. I was wowed by the rows upon rows of stacked up imitation branded goods in Aldi and even more WOWED by their prices. Unfortunately most of the food I have tasted as far wasn't as wowing.... This included the not so cheesy gruyer cheese straws, the salty chocolate digestives, very dry bread (literally the sandwich dried my mouth better than a dentist's office) and not very juicy lemons. HOWEVER, they do somehow managed to make delectable "posh" chocolates, which comes in either packs of 5 in a pretty card board box or a bag of 5 variety flavours for about 99p. I am partial to the milk chocolate which tastes a bit like lindt and the dark is pretty decent too. Wowed by the prices, I leave with about 10 times as much groceries as I get from waitrose and about 5 times from tesco. Not sure I would shop here rather than the other 2 though... It is very cheap and the fresh produce looks ok, but I am not sure about anything else, down to the £3.50 bottle of "champagne"...

This particular Marks and Spencer is really just a grocery store (not a big M&S like the one…read moredowntown that has clothes, etc.) - and has a lot of good, fresh food as well as some innovative sauces and kits. Their prices are not bad, even though I think they have a reputation for being the pricey option; but when doing my own informal price comparisons with Sainsbury and Tesco, they all seem to be pretty similar. M&S tends to have a pretty good selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. I think their weakness is in the fact that they mostly only have their own store brands of nonperishables, but they've started to incorporate other brands of cereal, etc. But generally, you can be sure you're going to find what you need here, with good quality, and at a decent price. I'm a fan of their Indian cooking sauces, some of their pasta sauces, and their house-brand cereals. Just a note: For anyone with experience with actual Mexican food, their enchilada kits will be a disappointment. But that's pretty typical for Britain, anyway... you don't really come here for Latin American food ;)

The range of products is not as good as that in the Westgate and the prices are higher - a tub of houmous might be 5p more expensive here. It's not the place to do your weekly shop, but is convenient for little things that you might have forgotten to buy. Queues are long but fast moving at peak times. One thing that does put me off is that most of the fresh fruit and veg is pre-packaged, which means that a) you can't pick out exactly what you want, and b) you can't have smaller amounts than are in the bags.

Because it's only Sainsbury's Local, as opposed to the main shop, you don't really get the good Sainsbury's Basics deals or the more unusual foods, but there's usually a suitable alternative available. The queue often snakes around the shop and is very offputting, but it moves surprisingly quickly; they've got a very efficient system going, so don't be put off because of that. The most frustrating thing is trying to fit everything into a bag on the tiny counter, as the shop assistants work very quickly! Some are friendly, some aren't so, but you'll get your food for a reasonable price, so it doesn't really matter.

There's a public carpark right next door (rumour has it that Waitrose tried hard to buy some of the carpark from the council but were refused) and most of the Headigton buses stop fairly nearby.
