The best thing about this place is the lower cost and proximity to shopping. I have had no issues with repairs to my unit; they're typically pretty quick for the basic stuff. Transportation isn't great, as the train is only accessibly by bus - unless you like walking for miles. Street parking isn't easy so if you have a car and don't have a parking space, good luck. But all in all, it's the only affordable place in New York that looks good outside and the apartments are fairly spacious. You could do worse... read more

This is where I grew up and back then I would give it five stars. We used to have kosher delis where my dad would pick up knishes for Sunday breakfast. There used to be a very nice Chinese restaurant that I loved to go to and where I first learned to use chopsticks. We used to have metal slides that burned like hell in the summertime but were still fun to play on, and ropes that we swung on like Tarzan in the jungle. It was so different back then and now it's gotten a little leery. Sure, they've improved the shopping area but the residential sections have become a little dangerous. Riverbay is the main corporation that manages Co-op City and they've done well to separate tenants out of their money. The apartments here are a good price compared to other places, especially considering your electricity, gas and water are all included and many apartments have outdoor space, either balcony or patio. Also, they've now allowed dogs in Co-op which is something I thought would never happen. Unfortunately, many people I know who have tried to leave and get their money back from their down payments have been forced into litigation until they've exhausted every cent. Riverbay is ruthless, in my opinion, keeping monies that should have gained considerable interest with justifications that are quite unjust. It's convenient to live in Co-op but it may end up being a living nightmare trying to get out since they've tripled the amount of a down payment you need in order to have one of their apartments. read more

Co-op City is a middle income cooperative located in the north-eastern most corner of the Bronx. I know that there's no cachet to living in the Bronx, (ask someone from Riverdale where they live) but Co-op City is a pretty nice community of hard working people. Sure, you could live in Manhattan or Westchester County, but you can't beat the rent here with a stick! It's one of the largest housing project in the Mitchell-Lama program. Residents buy shares into Riverbay Corp. as part of the purchase program. And you really can't beat the central air-conditioning with gas and electricity included. Many people who have left Co-op City sorely miss that if nothing else. The newly repaired garages are priced low as well. I consider myself very lucky to have grown up in Co-op City. There's lots of grass, trees, and wildlife. Yes there is wildlife in the Bronx. We regularly see pheasants, egrets, hawks, rabbits and more geese than you'd ever want to meet. Now we even have skunks! No...not large cats with white paint down their backs. Wild skunks. And I kid you not, I saw an opossum just last year. It's sort of like someone put a little piece of suburbia in the middle of the city. There are still some untouched spaces. There's Givens Creek Woods adjacent to Co-op City and Pelham Bay Park just across the Hutchinson River. The best thing by far about Co-op City is its diversity. You'd be hard pressed to find a country in the world that is not represented in its residents. Co-op truly is a city within a city. Co-op City has its own educational park, a private security force, and three Shopping Centers right on the premises. Then there's Bay Plaza on its southern end. The downside is that it is pretty remote. Walking to the nearest subway is a trek, so you will have to take the bus. There is express bus service that will get you into Midtown Manhattan easily. Many of the households here own cars. If you do, just hop on I95 and & head north to do all your shopping. Having lived in 4 out of the 5 boroughs, Co-op City still ranks #1 for spaciousness & affordability. I loved my 23 years there. I think you will too. read more

I feel like I'm going to bump into old JHS and HS from back in the day every time I'm down in Co-op City. I like the facelift Bay Plaza has gotten with the many shops. For a long time, JC Penney was the only department store to make decent purchases in. Now, with the addition of the Mall at Bay Plaza, with Macy's, Aldo and Michael Kors, I think it was an excellent business addition to the neighborhood. (Despite all that traffic it has created). The scene here at times is a madhouse just driving from point A to point B. But for many, the Mall seems to serve the community well. But, the few times I'm here, my mission is to get in and get the freak out- quick. read more

I hate this place sometimes. I mean, it's my neighborhood and I grew up here. I spent many evenings crawling through the cheap hole in the fence and going fishing with my grandpa on the water. I spent many afternoons watching geese and old people [I'll let you decide who is more entertaining] but as I get older, I realize how much of a pain this place is. Good luck trying to stay out late... the only 24 hour bus is the disgustingly ghetto Bx28. The only links to Pelham Bay [the Bx29 and QBx1] decide to be difficult late at night. I used to live here a few years ago, but since my grandparents still live here, i visit every few months. This place has gotten better ever since they got rid of the parking lot in the center. Cars used to be in their "Panic" mode in the middle of the night and it was impossible to sleep. It's all gone now. Neighbors can always be a problem in any apartment building. 50/50 chance of having a nice and quiet neighbor. Transportation is fine. Bx28 takes you to the (5) train or further via Gun Hill Road. Bx26 will take you to the (2) train at Allerton. QBx1 takes you to the (6) train at Pelham Bay Park and continues into Queens via I-678. Bx12 will take you to the (5) or the (2) via Pelham Parkway. read more

I've lived here for almost 10 years. Pros -Flora and fauna. Sometimes I feel like I'm living in the fucking Bronx Zoo; we've got skunks, geese, hares, possums, and the occasional confused deer from Westchester roaming around in the fields at night. During periods of low-tide, the air gets that delish sea-salty flavor. -Checkers. Though I prolly only eat there once every four months, I still like bragging about it. -Proximity to City Island/Orchard Beach/Pelham Bay Park From my apartment in Section 5, I can walk to either or just look off my terrace for an unblocked view of either...yeah, its sweet. Cons -Geese. True, we don't have pigeons like Manhattan, but trust me...geese are not worth the trade-off. These fuckers are huge, nasty, and HIGHLY TERRITORIAL. I've never met an animal that could simultaneously ; Block traffic - School buses, MTA Buses, cabs, cars, trucks, etc...NO ONE is allowed to pass or honk at them if they're crossing the street, espesh when they have their newly hatched babies. Which is cute on a Sunday afternoon, but a pain in the ass on a Monday morning. Kick my ass - these birds run deeper than the Bloods, Crips, and all the LA Cholo gangs put together. ...and still fit in my oven, if I ever lose my job and can't afford chicken. -Crappy stores/shopping. Don't get me wrong, I accept my bougie-ness, but even the Bay Plaza stores are low-brow for me; Mandees, Footlocker, JCPenney's? Eh... I'll address this in my review for Bay Plaza. -Transportation Unless you own a car (which many people like my parents do, since we have reserved parking for residents) you WILL either be memorizing the schedules of several buses in order to get out of Co-Op City...or walking over/under I-95 to get to the train like I occasionally do. In conclusion - for the moment, Co-Op City will do...but as soon as I'm done with grad school, I'm outta here. read more

If your thinking of moving her go to the different sections and select which sections you would prefer to live in. Check out the bus routes an stores. I fell in Love with Coop City when I moved in 10 years ago. This place is getting better and better. They provide FREE workout classes and upgraded the playground for the kids and the Adult playground (Workout stations around the Greenway) and Community rooms. In the summer they offer FREE shows every Tuesday after work on the Greenway and they cater to all cultures, Caribbean, Latin, American, the young and old. And these are not some small side show they hire local residents who are professionals. The firework show is the best I've ever seen. Even better then the Manhatten show. They cater to the young and the old. The show is always shoveled in the winter and the sprinkler system is up and running in the summer. They added police poles in case you have an emergency and we have a Garden and base ball fields. When I have an issue with anything in my apartment they fix it. Your not going to find a Coop in the Bronx for their economical prices. Heating, AC, water, and electricity are all included in your Maintenance price. Also the section you live in defiantly effects your experience in Coop City. I prefer sections that don't have stores. The stores increase traffic and young adults lingering around (even some older adults) and making it hard to enjoy all that Coop City has to offer. There are some down sides: Parking is a mess. There is never an abundant amount of parking for guest. The garages do offer paid parking but it's still annoying that I can't just invite someone over without them getting frustrated looking for local parking. Since they built the mall traffic is so heavy. It can take me up to 10 - 15 just to get out of Coop city. The street lights don't coordinate perfectly so if you don't move fast enough it's the full 15 minutes. Snow days the buses just don't care about us, they just don't show up. If one elevator goes out your only left with one elevator so your wait time can be long. I think if you grew up in the 80's or before, you may think negatively of Coop City because of all the changes. But not all changes are bad. read more

Ive lived in coop city for many many moons and at the end of the day i rather live here then a lot of other places in the bronx or manhattan. You come home late from parties its quiet nobody loitering in front of your blg. All year round its a pretty decent community. Its the people who live here or come from other places to visit or live who actually make it worse a lot of times, with there "ghetto" and un-neighborly ways. Bay plaza is really changing the new indoor mall should be nice soon to open and more places to eat as well. They are even upgrading the aMc movie theater (about time) lol hair salon, nail salons etc... It really is a decent place to live. Even as far as crime the police do a good job of keeping it peaceful after all these years. The bldgs are kept clean the floors swept garbage rooms clean lobby's clean nice lobby attendants i can go on and on and its affordable to live here, very nice sized apts with nice views and terraces. Even the outside around the bldg and landscaping is kept clean, grass cut flowers and trees planted grass planted. The farmers market and other summer activities they provide to kids and adults are nice too. For the money its worth giving COOP CITY a chance if your considering living or visiting TRY IT any negative reviews these are HATERS!! read more

I have lived in co op city for 19 years till my parents bought a house in Westchester county. After 4 years I filled out an application to get my very own place in co op city to be close to my job since I work for the city now. After waiting almost 2 years the director, Mrs. McNeill of RiverBay apartments told me she couldn't offer me an apartment due to my co-applicant credit score and told me to re apply....smh I have good credit and both me and my co-applicant are city workers who grew up in co op city.... It was so easy for her to deny us after waiting so long and telling me to get back on the list...I guess to wait another 2 years. But they have people living in Co Op city that can't pay rent, smoke weed in the staircase and basically ruin the community. oh well time to move on to better things... read more

I have lived in Co-op City for many years, its not Central Park West, however, it is a relatively nice neighborhood. One's perspective on the matter, really depends on what section they live in. For example, I live in section 1, but have spent a lot of time in section 5. In some ways, they feel worlds apart. Section 1, is low profile, things may happen here and there but I feel secure. There are several parks within walking distance and there is a lovely green way, that I utilize during spring and summer. The Bronx is not what everyone else sees on T.V.-dirty with Bodegas on the conner. Co-op city is pretty clean and has maintenance people that are visibly working to keep the neighborhood in order. Is it perfect no! Things happen that get swept under the rug, and sometimes, Riverbay has a laps in judgement with regard to the quality of the people they let move in, but overall it is okay. I do not live in filth or fear, and as a mother that is important. I am surprised by all the negative reviews. True, if you do not have a car, it kind of sucks, but lack luster bus schedule vrs. shoot outs every other day and zombie drug addicts- I WILL TAKE THE LACK OF BUSES. PRIORITIZE PEOPLE! read more

My grandparents and uncle were original residents of Coop City having moved into their apartment in 1969. Coop City went through many changes both good and bad, but became very unsafe in the 1990s. I am very pleased to say that it has become much safer. My biggest issue with Coop City and Riverbay Corp is the very poor maintenance of apartments. You put in work orders and they never get done. Unfortunately, about 5 years ago due to severe leaks from above my grandparents apartment developed a severe mold problem. Because we could not get maintenance to come and fix the issue I hired someone to do mold remediation and paid for it out of my own pocket. I finally had to move my grandparents and uncle out as another leak developed and it took four months before maintenance to come up to repair the leak. As I could see the mold and mildew forming in the bathroom and bedroom I gave up and moved my grandparents and uncle out. Furthermore, I just discovered they were charging my family $400 a month MORE than what their maximum posted rents are for that size apartment. Riverbay Corp has demanded three months rent and is refusing to take responsibility for the da mage caused by the major floods in the apartment (they actually want to charge my grandparents for the repair). It's sad that people who have stayed when everyone else fled and been integral part of the community are treated this way. Be prepared it seems the only way to get anything done at Coop City is to hire an attorney and sue. read more

For a family who mainly has children, this is a nice neighborhood. The streets are not littered with trash (unlike Fordham eww...); every spring, the walkways are decorated with tulips and lots of green grass; the parks are within a close proximity of each building; you get a nice view of Pelham Bay Park, City Island, Long Island Sound, and the Hutchinson River (unless you live in the side facing the bus depot, scrap metal shops, and I-95... bummer). Pretty safe neighborhood with the Co-Op City Police Department making sure everything and everyone is safe. During a midsummer night, you can smell the fresh salty air as you take a walk on the Greenway and play soccer with your buds. It is truly very refreshing. Now for the bad stuff... If you're a college student who works and/or goes to school in Manhattan, New Jersey, or the other boroughs, then this is NOT the place for you! You will feel trapped here. Bus schedules are not consistent with your time from school and/or work, so you must comply with the MTA or else you do not get a bus ride. At very late nights when riding the train from Manhattan is not an option, the express bus is available for the price of more than two subway rides. During 9am or 10 am, buses run very slowly and once you miss it, your screwed for a half hour to an hour, depending on the day. We say buses because no trains run to Co-Op City. The closest is the Metro-North, but there is no station available. The I-95 blocks our way to walk to the 6 train and the 5 train is in a pretty sketchy neighborhood. The 2 train is too far and forget about the 4 and D trains. The 1 train is nonexistent. Bay Plaza was once a pretty ghetto shopping center, but I've noticed surprising changes, such as the introduction of Claire's last fall, the Children's Place, and now a new construction plan. They're going to build a Macy's, which will heavily compete with the only department store in Co-Op: JC Penney. It's going to be called The Mall at Bay Plaza, which will not only include Macy's, but connect JC Penney and open a few other stores. This project will end in 2013. Let's see if I'll still be here for it. Otherwise, if you were recently married and looking for a nice, quiet neighborhood to start a family, then this is the place for you. If you travel a lot with no car available at your hand, good luck. I hate it here. I can't wait to finish college so I can get my own place and know the feeling of having a walking distance to my train. I love coop city the only downfall for me is too many teenagers; some hang out in front of some of the buildings making the community look unattractive then there are other teenagers who enjoy making trouble. The other issue for me is walking from the garage to my building during the nighttime. It is a residential community; therefore in some areas it's pretty dark, some parts more than others and it's quiet so I am always cautious. For the most part it is pretty safe. I can't believe all the complaints from all of you. I moved into co-op in 1970. We were the first family in Building 8. Only 8 buildings built at the time. I was able to see co-op city being built. I was 7 when we moved in. It was a clean and safe place to grow up. The apartments are all very nice. Utilities included in your carrying charges. We didn't have schoold when I moved in. I had to go the the yellow school house on the blvd. I was also the first class to go through casals from 5 to 8th grade. Please don't get me wrong. I don't think there is anything perfect about where one lives, but try to appreciate what co-op is and what it was built for. A place where middle class people can raise a family in a clean, safe environment. Co-op certainly met that need. I am proud that I grew up there. I hope one day you all will feel the same way. read more

what i don't like is the fact that when you move out, you are required to fork over 3 months of rent. then if they don't sell the apartment they keep all of your equity, i am still waiting for my equity to be returned. if anyone is interested in moving there do your research.... they have been sued several times for this same reason... read more

co op city is rapidly going down hill . it is becoming a bad example of a "project".. it use to be a decent lace with decent residents but since river bay has started letting anyone move in, not to mention the rent hike every few months, its forcing the older generation to move out. river bay in itself is one of the most thieving organizations out. i wouldn't advise anyone to move into this place unless you enjoy being financially bullied by the administration. It never use to be this way. i don't mean to rant but i think the world should know about these people. where else on earth are you charged a late fee of $200 on your rent? if a person buys a co-op why are they paying $1400 on their maintenance? smh!!! every week the admin. is in the papers for doing something shady, all to do with stealing the peoples money. God help these people turn from their wicked ways. My advice to people seeking housing in co-op: PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!!! YOU WONT REGRET IT UNTIL ITS TOO LATE. read more
