This required me to downsize my beloved book…read morelibrary to a mere seven boxes, which have since obviously snaked back up to being stored in book cases (hurrah!) and window sill and chair (boo). So when my my mum recommended this place for me and my boyfriend to inhale a restorative cup of coffee to fill the gap between train arrival and being picked up by parents en route to family party, I was a bit doubtful. It took precisely 15 minutes for me to buy a book in that shop, and that was only because I ended up talking to a friend of my mum's for 14, see my boyfriend was laughing at a book, think "Buying a book for someone else is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT to buying a book for myself!" and then thrust my card in the cashier's face. One Tree has grown exponentially since I last wandered in about seven years ago. It's a lovely independent book shop with a great selection (where Waterstones has fan notes from staff primly attached to the shelves, One Tree puts recommendations on notes on the back of books and spreads them around tables for people to pick up and read). It also has a lovely big coffee shop at the back, tables out the front and more table room upstairs. We were advised not to sit upstairs as it was a bit boring that day - that from the staff! Being a Saturday, the shop was filled with families clearly bursting with relief at having somewhere nice to take the children that the parents didn't hate with every fibre of their being. We had a very nice pot of Earl Grey, my boyfriend and I ignored each other while reading book/Keith Richards in The Times, and then my mum came and picked us up. Just like school.

Well, it was a good thing we did, since we didn't get to go back for afternoon tea... Just as the name suggests, it is located right by the canal. It was very picturesque, peaceful and relaxing. They also have seating upstairs, and had histories on the canal, with photos posted all around the wall. Their cakes looked amazing, but I decided not to order any dessert on this day. Yes I know, a big mistake! Our friend ordered Heavenly Hot Chocolate, and it looked so pretty! We went with Teashop House Blend Tea, and Earl Grey. The young boy who brought the teas (I hear this is a family-run business) was trying to very careful not to mix them up. But the funny thing was, he totally mixed the tea up! LOL. We didn't realize until half way through... I thought the House Blend tea tasted so much like Earl Grey. For lunch, we had Ham, Cheese & Chutney Sandwich and Eggs Benedict. They were both tasty, nice portion, and filling. Our friend went with something healthier, and ordered one of their vegan sandwiches. It is nice to have that option if you want or need vegan dish. We had a nice quick lunch here. It was adorable and cozy. The food was good, not amazing, but good. I think the sweets might be better than the actual food...I will never know, unless I go back! Lesson learned: don't never expect your plan to go just the way you planned them...and have your dessert first!

This place is apparently new in Winchester (at least it wasn't on Yelp!). It's prominently located…read morein the town centre right across from the library, and it's large glass frontage and bright funky décor is inviting to the passing thirsty traveller. The name refers to their proposed connection between coffee and wine, both of which they specialise in. They recommend pairings of coffees and particular wines to try. I think they might have a hard time convincing us of this as the two don't seem like natural companions; but if I'd been in town for a bit longer I might have taken them up on the offer and enhanced my education. I love the layout and the way everything is informatively labelled, and the staff are keen to tell you about the varieties of coffee on offer. I confess I was more interested in a brunch snack at that point, and settled for one of the specials, avocado with red onion on sourdough toast - what a taste sensation! I'd never tried avocado on toast before, but it works really well. With a good strong Long Black on the side, I was content to sit and try and puzzle out the cryptogram on the wall depicting the relationships between coffee and wine with a variety of arrows connecting different letters. In the end I gave up, deciding it was just a bit of fun, but somebody please correct me if it does mean something, as it's keeping me awake at nights! Although they are open late Wednesday through Saturday, it's not really an evening restaurant-y kind of place; it's more of a tapas menu that they have on. But it would be perfect for a pre- or post- theatre glass of wine and a nibble, and it's just along the road from the Theatre Royal.

Inside it's warm and bright thanks to the glass panelling making it inviting. The staff are always friendly and keen to help you find what you want, whether it's a quick cup of coffee, a light snack or something more substantial for lunch. I've tried most items on the menu but my favourite is the sausage sandwiche with chilli jam, avocado and rocket on South dough toast. I always add extra bacon as well and it is divine! Admittedly I haven't been here in the evening all that often so can't comment on the evening menu but for a quick stop at lunch it is one of the best places in town.
