In the early 1900's , the British Crown purchased land for the purpose of settlement across New Zealand. The " Ahuriri Block" which is today known as "Hawke's Bay " was signed with the " Maori People" in 1840.
The land of which Clive Square sit's on today was originally used as a sports field for playing cricket & football. In 1884 Clive Square was converted into the Village green & garden. But, after the earthquake of 1931 the Square became known as " Tin Town". A refuge and market for all the displaced citizens.
Today, Clive Square offers a peaceful retreat with seating benches/ beautiful gardens/and water fountain. Many of the city's yearly fundraising events happens here in the square. The historical importance of Clive Square, should make this one of your destination in Napier. Enjoy !
