It's a beautiful site to see, but unless you have other business in Doolin, don't go out of your way just to view this 16th century castle. It's just not worth it. I wasted half a day to check out this castle that I could only drive around. Other than that, I don't know a whole lot more about this 16th century Irish castle. Some of the passages are slightly narrow and until you get to the main cave they are very short. So walk low, make sure to wear your hard hat and you will be awed and amazed, especially when you see the tiny hole the original discoverers had to crawl though, make sure to walk around the path before or after your cave visit to see the animal the fairy village the original entrance and some beautiful scenery. There was also a nature trail to walk and lots of animals to look at.

To consider that some of the stones were brought from 3 miles away is just astounding, as is the understanding that this site dates to 2,200 BCE. To think of the ancient peoples that walked here so long ago is certainly astounding! The stone circle is definitely an impressive site to behold! It's a short walk to the cliffs. We did not go inside the shops or visitor center, based on online advise. There are very safe walkways in both directions where you can see the cliffs. The day we were there was grey and drizzly. As soon as we parked, the rain stopped and the clouds lessoned. I'm very grateful for that. That wind though, there were moments, I was almost afraid of the wind. I hadn't walked in wind that intense since a tornado when I was 5 years old. The views were breathtaking. The walk from the visitor center up to the fort is pretty rough. The temperature was nice and fairly cool so that helped but I think if it was a hot day it would have been way harder. You're basically walking on uneven stone and rocks the whole way up so wear decent shoes!

It's about a 15 minute walk up to the fort. Once you're up there, the view are spectacular. It's right on the coast and the views of the cliffs are amazing. It was probably about a half an hour bike ride over from the pier. I would definitely recommend stopping here when on the island!

The visit costs 4 euros per person.

She has spent many years collecting artifacts and stories about Frank McCourt. Even if you did not read his books or are not a fan of his work, the Museum provides a glimpse to what life was like in Limerick during the World Depression in the 1930's. It shows the harsh reality of growing up poor in Ireland and motives the soul as you see him and his school mates become great successes after such a rough childhood. Plus, the owner is very knowable and has designed the entire museum herself. She has a great hand made art work and has utilized her skills to create authentic scenes from Mr. McCourt's life. Afterwards you can go to South's Pub for a pint.

There is also a small building you can enter which provides some height for a slightly altered view. I can imagine the line can get long on a busy day, so I would say you can skip it if the line is out of control. Walking fast and ignoring everything, it will take you 25-30 minutes on an average day to get from end to end. Factor in photo stops, more tourists than I hit, and a slower pace and I'd recommend you plan at least an hour - an hour and 30 minutes if you pop into the building I mentioned above. Most tour groups give you 2-hours, so you should be fine to enjoy. Check it out!

Outside the area are stores and vendors selling gifts, food, jewelry and clothing. Most of the prices are similar.
