As the soil pipe was not connected to anything, they removed it and the lead, put in a section of lathe to replace a rotting area and fetched in a new tile to fill the gap. Whilst initially we were only looking for a roof repair (as suggested by Mike) it transpired after a heavy downpour that we needed a whole new roof. Mike provided a favourable, realistic quote and could start the work fairly quickly. John and Nathan who were the roofers for our job were absolute superstars. Billy and his staff were initially called to do our flat roof. We were also experiencing a leak on the main roof of our house, but something we were going to leave until Summer came around. Impressed by B&T Plastic's work we asked Billy to have a look and agreed on a reasonable price to get the whole roof of our house done. His staff were great under Billy's supervision and they came back to fix a few odds and ends on 2 occasions even after payment.

Billy, the man who apparently runs the outfit, calling me "sweet" all the while, quoted £380 for the replacement of the lead flashing, replacing two tiles (that is fitting them - we provided the tiles), and for putting up a cowl for the fireplace chimney in front. He was available for the following week, and it all sounded well - expensive for the two hours he believed it would take, but it would at least be done. I should have cancelled when he called me a couple of hours later asking to do it the next day. They spent less than an hour on the actual work - no new lead, they used old lead, and where I am not against recycling, it doesn't look flat even now - how it can prevent a leak is beyond me. He didn't arrive prepared, and I got the next lovely surprise - he couldn't get the cowl for my type of chimney pot (I have subsequently found them, and they would have been here on the day originally agreed). They cost about £25 - and he took £25 of the bill, but that didn't reflect in any way the actual labour charges - apparently, I still had to pay for that, despite the fact it was not my fault he couldn't do the work agreed. He then tried to upsell me for other work - if I had been treated at all fairly I wouldn't have minded. £150 to change 5 ft of guttering, £250 for cement between the ridges. I said I was in the wrong line of work - it took me a week to earn that money, and he said "you wouldn't be able to go up the ladder sweet". That assumes a lot - I have painted every bit of my house. But it does not address the gross overcharging for the time and effort, that did not involve any actual materials purchase on his part. I wanted it done and I have no confidence that it has been sorted. He even checked that I had signed the check! He wanted to return Monday for cash - I said no, because I already was too irritated, and if he is going to overcharge me for work not done, he better pay tax on it. I am really glad I asked about payment beforehand, or he may have tried to insist on cash. As it happens, his accounts are overdue at companies house at this writing. I guess he expects everyone to be as shifty as he appeared to be - maybe really competent, but every time I queried something, it was a case of his trying to make everything sound more complicated than it was - too bad a roofer recovering from injuries was inside, listening to it all. It says on the "contract" (for the guarantee - he made a big deal out of this) All materials guaranteed for 10 years - nothing whatever about the workmanship. This was a poor choice on my part - I felt generally I have been treated well by workmen, and I didn't do "due diligence" regarding the workman, so I accept that I hired him.
