The shows do seem geared towards the quite elderly. If you're 60 years old, you'll be one of the youngest in the audiences. My only complaint is the theatre is very hot. There's very little air circulating. In honour of the recent Johnny Cash show, I've made up a new verse for the Cash song "I've Been Everywhere". Enjoy :) Please turn on the air man, I don't think it's fair man, I'm burning in my chair man, My socks are in despair man

The Playhouse in Gananoque is summer-stock theatre with two twists. One being locale, and the…read moreother the seasonal program. As such, it stands out as one of the best regional summer theatres in all of Ontario. Firstly, the theatre is found in Gananoque proper right on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, giving its lobby one of the best views of any theatre around. Dock space is also available, allowing you to book a slip to pull up your boat and spend the night after an evening of theatre, making it one of the most unique experiences that you'll have. The program every year has the typical run of theatre favourites that you'd expect from a regional theatre of this kind. That said, the program directors at the playhouse ensure that there is a healthy mix of summer favourites and new Canadian works. This has allowed them to bring in plays like the Wingfield Farm series which through its production in theatres of this kind, has brought mutual success to both the playwright and the theatre. The playhouse also provides a more challenging theatre piece in the early fall, allowing theatre students from Kingston and the surrounding areas the opportunity to see a more demanding piece in a truly distinctive venue. The theatre itself is rustic and smallish, seating over 300 in a close proximity so that everyone is close to the stage, close to the action, and experiencing a unique evening of theatre.

There is…read morean eclectic range of performers that have graced the stage - from K-OS to Stompin' Tom, Davy Jones to the Tragically Hip, the Temptations to Buddy Guy and the outdoor venue (the Empire Square) has featured such acts as Bachman Cummings, Styx, Peter Frampton and Kenny Rogers. And that is just the tip of the iceberg! And it doesn't stop there...children's performances, dance competitions, ballets and most recently, plays courtesy of Caroline Smith. And movies, movies, movies. Empire movies are not the typical movies seen at the run of the mill multiplexes - it is also home to the Quinte Film Alternative, featured every second Wednesday. But the staff went above and beyond this past Saturday with their customer service. I had purchased tickets over the phone for Brett Kissel in November for my husband's Christmas present. When we arrived at the box office to pick them up just before the show, there was no record of my purchase. Nothing under my name, phone number, or the confirmation number that I had. It didn't make any sense to me, and I was scrambling to find the charge on my visa bill, sure that I was about to be told "Sorry, but there's no record here so you won't be seeing the show". Then the attendant at the desk did something amazing - she said "You know, I believe that you purchased tickets - I'm not sure where those tickets are, but here are two more. Enjoy the show, and thank you for choosing The Empire Theatre". I was floored. My husband was floored. That, ladies and gentlemen, is incredible customer service. Long story short, thank you Empire Theatre. Brett's performance was flawless, and so was yours. We will gladly choose The Empire Theatre again!

Sitting towards the back of the theater the noise from the party at the second floor bar was so loud it was hard to hear the performer! We asked about all the noise and the usher told us that they would check on it. A bit later nothing had changed so we asked the general manager. He told us that the people had reserved the bar for $200.00 so they had full use of it. He said he had asked them to quiet down a bit, to no avail! Well, we had paid for tickets to attend also. Our full table amounted to $272.00. Must be we didn't pay enough!!! This will make me think before I purchase anymore tickets to shows there or recommend this place to others!

They have tables and chairs with "no bad seats in the house," I was told. Unfortunately, we arrived well before the performance began, but could not find a seat because the theater was almost completely black, as are all the chairs and tables. I stumbled into invisible chairs and tables and had no idea of the layout of the place or where I should start looking. I fumbled my way back to the ushers, who were standing in a line at the entrance (not one of them was helping to seat people), and asked if they could bring the house lights up a bit. Instead, they suggested that I use the flashlight on my cell phone. While that prevented me from bashing my ankle into yet another chair, it still did not help me see the layout. We simply sank into the first two unoccupied seats we spotted. Again, at intermission, the house remained dark. It wasn't until after the show that they raised the house lights, and that was ONLY because they were having a question-and-answer session with the dancers and audience. I was actually irate by the time we left, because I then knew that their house lights were working, and they had simply ignored the many many complaints from people who were trying to find seats. How hard would it have been for one of the ushers to ask the house to bring up the lights???
