The y also stock food, treats and essentials for your pet, and the staff are always happy to help out with any questions you may have. One thing I love here is the giant Maccaw that sits near the bird section. He is massive, and I am tempted every time to buy him and take him home. That is until he lets out his huge squawk, and I realize that I do want to be on good terms with my neighbours.

We've been…read morein a couple times, and while the staff is friendly and they stock a huge amount of pet supplies, I wonder if it's too much. The last time we were in, there were two really sad looking labrador puppies for sale and their enclosure looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a while. They also had four manx DSH kittens in an enclosure right next to the puppies and the kittens too were trying to deal with a cramped, filthy space. It was a warm day and there was no air conditioning for the animals. We bought a cat carrier from them a few months ago and the cage itself was covered in a thick layer of dust that they didn't even offer to clean. I had to clean it before putting our cat in it for her vet trip. Most the birds in their massive enclosure look extremely distressed and some were plucking their feathers out. I'm not happy that they're outright selling dog and cat breeds, combined with their lack of cleanliness and state of the animals they have on display. I don't care to support shops who practice business in these conditions. The only saving grace is their stock is massive and their staff are friendly enough.

What I love about this pet shop, is after a nice chat with the manager, we learned he refuses to display kittens or backyard breeder cats "for sale" and rather, helps Animal Aid with adult cat rescue adoptees that need forever homes. After meeting with little Dante, we adopted him and he has been the sweetest cat. They welcome dogs on leashes into their stores, cater to dogs, cats, birds and fish. They offer grooming and classes. They also offer some really good loyalty rewards for repeat business and you can tell they're passionate about pets and pet care. They have several business and pet industry awards and it shows. Another chain pet store has opened up across the street, so I hope that doesn't hurt Claws'N'Paws' business. If you're in the area, please go visit them!

(Public holidays they are open from 10-4). One store is dedicated to all things fish, birds and reptiles - including the live animals themselves. Prices here are really good and the animals are well looked after. The fish tanks are clean and the staff are really good at chasing down the exact specimen you want for your new pet. The second store is for kittens, puppies, small animals and grooming needs. They provide a grooming service here but I have never utilized that. While meandering around their pet toys you can hear the sound of puppies playing and kittens purring - nothing like the kind of pet store where the animals are asleep in tiny boxes. The staff are happy to let you have a hold or a play with the animals. In terms of pet accessories these guys have everything. Albeit groovy dog collars, piles of pet food, mirrors for your birdcage or all manner of fish tanks - you are bound to find it here. They even have a Do It Yourself coin operated dog wash in their store which is always a lot of splashy fun - depending on how well behaved your dog is. Lucky for owners of escape artists it has a reasonably tall gate that prevents your dog from jumping out. I recommend keeping the lead on just in case. This is a really great store for pet lovers and staff turnaround here is pretty slow so if you are a regular you will be greeted by name. Highly recommend this one.

I've used the dog bath at the back of the store a few times and it's really handy. The store has an excellent selection of dry foods and refrigerated meats plus loads of dog treats. Watch your dog if you're walking around the store with them - a little tempting! I've had to purchase a couple of treats unintentionally. I don't really go to the other part of the store with the birds and fish. I like that they now have pet adoption, which I think they have had for a while but I only noticed a few months ago.

The plants are STILL looking great and growing strong. We recently bought more tetras and the staff here are knowledgeable, know their fish species, give great advice and the display aquariums always look clean and the fish, healthy. They're one of the only pet food shops we've been to in Melbourne, and we've been to many, that carries the oft sought/seldom found grain-free wet cat food. (Which is good for your carnivorous feline friends! Unless advised otherwise by your vet. I am not a professional.) They have litter trays big enough for the discerning, plus-sized feline, but their scratching posts are more suited for kittens and not larger breeds like Maine Coons, Norwegian Forest Cats or our dainty lass. We also bought a de-shedding comb for our medium/long-haired cat that works WONDERS. I'm pretty sure I brushed out another cat from her coat! Tip: Sign up to their loyalty program. Sometimes they do vouchers and there's usually a special on. They'll email letting you know what they are, but they're not so frequent in volume that they're annoying. Very happy to keep coming back here.

They've always been open and honest with us about the products we buy, including animals that have health or behavioural issues (eg, fish who are more aggressive than normal for their specie and need to be kept alone, or products that are damaged or missing pieces). This store also always been really good with replacing faulty products, including ones that have come damaged from the online warehouse or from other Petbarn stores!

Our dog is a big boxer and trying to wash him at home is super difficult. He either jumps out of the bath or runs away from the hose in the backyard, either way it is a total pain in the you-know-where. The Happy Pet Company has a bath with nice high sides and plenty of washing settings in the hose. It is operated with coins so make sure to bring plenty of gold. It generally costs us around $8 to give him a thorough scrubbing and about $5 for a lazy wash. The shop itself also sells dog treats, dog food, toys and bedding. They offer dog washing and grooming as well but this is a little expensive for my budget. Be careful if you come here with a big dog as there are often dogs all over the place. Our dog loves 'socialising' with other dogs but sadly others don't like being pinned to the floor with a big paw. For this reason I always go early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

They keep a record of what food you buy your dog and because of their advice his skin condition has completely vanished, his coat is shinier and he is just a happier little dude. Plus they don't get upset when your dog pees on the floor... thanks guys!
