Desk manager Elizabeth was the highlight of our trip. When one air conditioner did not work, and the gentleman behind the counter was far from sympathetic, Elizabeth later helped us with moving. The picture for Clarion shows a fountain that does not work, and landscaping that sorely needs help. They did their best with breakfast considering the person who had to take care of front desk and towels for guests also took care of putting out the breakfast. This was a five-star hotel at one point you can tell. So sad

Big TV and chest of drawers in the king-bed room.

I stayed at the Clarion recently for an overnight, while in The Region to visit family. Let me start with the good things: the room, the bathroom, and everything in it, was neat and clean and comfortable. I was even lucky that the windows faced out onto a small natural area, with trees and a pond, instead of the highway. The free breakfast spread was fantastic. I could hardly believe what I was seeing; I'd expected cold cereal and stale rolls. Instead, there were chafing dishes of scrambled eggs, bacon, pancakes, gallons of hot delicious coffee, cereal, juice . . . it was outstanding. The eggs were especially delicious. I made a pig of myself. And while I was eating, a few hotel staff stopped by to check in with me, was I enjoying the breakfast, how was my stay -- very friendly, pleasant, and good customer service. Checking in was easy, and so was checking out. The hotel was quiet; definitely not a busy night. No problems with parking at all. The downsides: toilet didn't flush well. TV remote was funky, had to be played with to work. Gentleman at the front desk at check-in acted like I was bothering him by showing up (although this one, I understand more -- when business is slow and someone shows up to make you work, it feels like an imposition. I've been there.) My room was at the end of the building, so I entered through a back door that was unsecured. It should be opened only with a hotel key card; instead, I walked right in when I arrived, and when I came back from dinner. (Yes, I reported this.) When my Mastercard bill arrived, I had a brief blood pressure upsurge; I saw that I had been charged three separate times for the single night. Before my eyes totally bugged out of my head, I noticed that two of the charges had been credited. So, someone at Clarion made a mistake, and somebody else caught it and corrected it. I would advise anyone who stays here to carefully check their credit card statement. When I reserved, I mistakenly thought the Clarion was located in that huge lineup of hotels next to Southlake Mall. I was wrong. You exit onto Rhode Island Avenue east of I65, and there isn't much back there except a senior living center. It's pretty isolated. That means you will have to drive for dinner. And when you exit, you don't exit the way you came in, onto Route 30; you exit onto Broadway, south of Route 30. I think this can be very confusing. I am a native of The Region, born and raised in Gary and Merrillville, so I wasn't confused, and I figured out right away how to get back to Route 30 and Southlake Mall area. Newcomers to the area who don't have access to GPS could easily get lost. So, bottom line; my stay here was A-Okay. If I spend another overnight in Merrillville, as I'm planning to do this fall, I kind of doubt I'd stay here again. I would probably be looking to upgrade a little.

We stayed overnight here to celebrate my daughter's birthday at a waterpark nearby. I chose this hotel based on positive reviews and because they had an outdoor pool for swimming/sunbathing. The whole hotel is in disrepair and needs attention. The grounds are not kept up, weeds everywhere, carpet dirty, things broken in the room, our ac didnt work properly (it was sticky and humid even though we set it at 68 degrees), the hallway was cooler, ice machine broken, ATM not working and the list goes on and on. I wish I had chosen a different place. It definitely took away from our family outing. Staff seemed friendly, but the owners need to sink some major $ into updates and repairs.

Disgusting is an understatement. When I went to the front desk to complain of various issues. The girl leaning back in a chair with her feet on the counter took a good 3-5 minutes to LOOK UP FROM TEXTING ON HER PHONE to see that I was there. Seriously? Employees are just allowed to lounge around and be on their phone so much that they don't notice a guest standing directly in front of them. Miranda was her name and she informed me that there was no manager working. Furthermore offered no solution to my complaint about the dirtiness and hair as over the bathroom or the fact that the tub was so backed up when I showered I was I other people's leftover hair and filth. Soooo gross. Not sure why she is working if she can't offer a solution. Gross to see employees smoking in uniform right in front of the hotel. Yeah that really welcomes new guests.

moxie at home for the night

Nice room, but as always could be cleaner. Breakfast was nice with a good variety. People down the hall were noisy, I think there was a wedding or reunion going on.

It was less than $200 and the suite was pretty large (see photos), the kitchen had everything you need, there were 2 tvs one in living room and one in bedroom. Bathroom was huge (see photo). Very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was complete with hot food, although both mornings we were there, small complaint, only sausage no bacon. The people of course very friendly and they kept all the food stocked. The fitness room was pretty good for a hotel, not like the Marriott Marquis but still more than adequate. Also attached to the fitness room is a laundry room and it says it is free. You need your own detergent but that seems like a good deal. All in all very good experience.

The sitting area was larger than many of the other Staybridge locations where I have stayed. So it would be a good place for a longer term stay. Breakfast was just ok. Scrambled eggs and Cajun potatoes were hot and fresh but there weren't as many selections as at most Staybridge locations. No cheese, salsa, fresh fruit, cottage cheese, condiments, etc. and the wheat bread was quite stale. This hotel is conveniently located near many restaurants and shopping. Many are within walking distance.

We're also Hilton loyalists, so that made the choice easy and Hilton Garden Inn is our favorite of the Hilton brands. Located not far from I-65, this location is relatively easy to get to. It's nestled toward the back of a large retail area and backs up to a large, empty field and some woods. We arrived late afternoon and checked in the day before (room selection) and chose a room on the back side of the hotel, towards the large, empty field and the woods, figuring it'd be quieter than the retail/street facing side (it was). We stopped to check in and get physical room keys (Hilton's digital key is great...when it works). The young lady behind the counter was awesome. She was friendly and didn't mind chatting for a few minutes. She made us feel pretty welcomed. The bar and restaurant were closed (on a Sunday evening), so dinner had to come from somewhere not on the property. Not to worry, there are plenty of chain eateries in the area, but it as far as we could tell lacked local food establishments. Outback did the trick, but we were hoping to stay in after doing an obscene amount of walking throughout the day. Our room was clean and tidy when we got to it. We had to adjust the temperature because it was about 66° when we arrived. The bathroom was a bit dated in its appearance and for some strange, annoying reason the bathroom door automatically closed all the way. Every time. Aggressively. As it it was running a race. The lobby was bright and spacious, as most Hilton Garden Inn lobbies are. We never made it to the pool, but without a hot tub we didn't really have a reason to. Checkout at this location is noon o'clock, which is nice because we like to sleep in. All in all a good stay. If we're in the area again we'd gladly consider staying here again.

My family and I just wanted to change quickly and go to my wedding. Maria was the front desk person at the time and after she came out of the back room she already seemed to have a nasty attitude. My mom proceeds to tell her the names and that we booked through a third party website since it was cheaper, and the website had given us adjoining rooms (and selected handicap accessible). Maria proceeds to take 5 minutes to tell us we "booked wrong" by booking through a third party instead of the through them, and that they couldn't guarantee adjoining rooms. She additionally says the bookings that they did for us were two rooms on two different floors. Maria proceeds to stare blankly at us expecting us to do her job apparently. Since as the customer I had to ask her to do her job and try to get us on the same floor at least. She's clicks around for 20 minutes with nothing. Not interacting with us and not trying to update us. Eventually my mom steps in after being preoccupied by my young nephew, and asks what's going on. Maria reexplains that my mom "booked" wrong etc. and again just stops and stares at us blankly. And I tell her, well are you even trying to get us on the same floor, because apparently she needed another reminder to do her job. She proceeded to start clicking away and complaining to us about the system even though I know damn well it should not be taking 30 minutes (by this point) to figure it out with customer prompts. My father wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt after and said maybe she was at the end of her shift but no. My parents got back to the hotel near 10/11pm after our reception and she was still there. And on top of that, Maria did not give us our breakfast cards almost making us pay. So she just had this nasty attitude, had no clue what she was doing, and was acting like a total deer in headlights after already being hit. The overall stay was nice but working in customer service is a very specific position and Maria is not cut out for it. Maria is the reason I was late to my own ceremony.

Two different cars where people were just sitting inside with the car running and smoking. Not exactly the thing I like to see as a female traveling alone. As I walk in, the lobby smells like cigarette smoke and is warm & humid. Even though I checked in in advance on the app, they did not have my room keys or room ready. I still had to check in at the front desk and give all of my information, phone number, credit card, which is weird because when you check in on the app that is not normally required. You are just handed your room keys after they confirm your identity. I get to my first room, and upon walking in I noticed the toilet seat up, black hairs on the toilet seat and black hairs all over the floor in the bathroom. The roll of toilet paper is also dangling almost to the floor. The room also smelled terrible, like dank mold. I immediately walked out back to the front desk to request a different room. The front desk workers were not very friendly or welcoming, and almost seemed annoyed when I asked for another room. She clicked around on the computer for a while and was able to find me another room. Upon arriving in this room, the smell was much better, but it felt so wet and humid in the air. The air in this entire hotel is very moist, to the point where the linens and bedsheets feel wet to the touch. I also found out the carpet feels wet under your feet, so I kept my shoes on the entire time except when sleeping. Every surface in this room just feels grimy and sticky. There are fingerprints and smudges on nearly every light fixture, the remote (which I didn't even touch because I could see the nasty grime on it). There are water stains on the ceiling above the window. For some reason, there are bed skirts on the bed (which are not needed because the wooden frame of the bed goes all the way to the floor as most hotel room beds do these days) which just seems unsanitary in my opinion as they have white stains and tears all over them and are obviously not washed in between guests. They also feel nasty to the touch. When rooms look like this, it makes me nervous for bed bugs. Thank goodness there was no evidence of them that I could see. The first towel I grabbed in the bathroom, had a make up stain on it. At this point, I'm expecting nothing less. At least this bathroom didn't have hair all around. The sheets on the beds were clean. Though the beds were extremely uncomfortable and hard. Let's just say I really didn't sleep, thank goodness I was only staying one night. It just seemed like everywhere you turn there's another problem. I parked at the end of the building because the main parking lot was full by the time I got here, however, by no surprise, the key card scanner at that entrance was broken with wires, just hanging out of the wall. So then I had to walk all the way around the front of the building. The coffee machine at the breakfast area is broken, so you have to make the coffee in your room. This hotel should be ashamed to call itself a Fairfield Inn. Mariott should be ashamed to have this in their portfolio. They need to reconsider. I have stayed at over a dozen Fairfield properties and I've never seen one in this much need of maintenance and updating. I haven't stayed at a hotel this run down in over a decade. As platinum elite (and formerly titanium elite Mariott Bonvoy member up to last year), this is unacceptable. If this was my first experience as a guest at a Fairfield property, I would never come back. I wish I would've read reviews on the Mariott app before I booked this stay. I rarely do for stays of 1 night, or stays at Fairfield properties in general because there is usually no issue. And for $140 for the night, that's a double with this room should cost. I bet the red roof Inn next-door has nicer rooms.

We were overcharged for a night, and the staff refused to correct it. They also would not accept our tax-exempt paperwork, because apparently basic hotel administration is an optional amenity here. Housekeeping knocked on our door at 7:44 a.m. on a Sunday, then returned at 8:23 a.m., just in case the first unwanted wake-up call had not fully ruined the morning. The manager appears to live on-site, which somehow makes the condition of the hotel even more confusing. Room 116 had floors so slick and greasy they felt like someone had mopped them with hair conditioner. Walking across the room felt like competing in a low-budget indoor ice-skating competition. The air conditioner was not working properly, so their solution was to attempt to replace the entire unit while we were still sitting in the room watching. Nothing says "relaxing hotel stay" like unexpected live HVAC theater. The shower water smelled like pond water, the bathroom was dirty, and the entire experience made us question whether "Comfort" Inn was intended as a name or an elaborate joke. Save your money. Sleep in your vehicle. Camp in a field. Befriend a local raccoon and ask to stay with its family. All would likely provide cleaner bathrooms, better customer service, and fewer surprise maintenance demonstrations.
