The process is much better. I check into room 240 and a pleasant young lady directed me to 1 of 6 kiosks, where they ask for your mailed summons and you scan the bar code and after checking in, you are directed to the payment line for proof of service and the mandatory $15 payment. It took less than 5 minutes. I was very impressed. Next, I was directed to take a seat in this room or one of three other juror assembly rooms in addition to a "quiet room", if that was your choice. *NOTE: Baltimore City has a one day/one trail pro ess so if you are not selected to serve on a jury you are eligible to be called the following year. Just because you were summoned to serve does not equate to serving as a juror. And as always, they have movies for your viewing pleasure, often the latest ones out on DVD and, if you are not chosen by lunchtime you are allocated an up to 90 minute lunch break where you can leave the building and report back at the time indicted. All in all, a needed improvement in the check-in process for jury duty. read more

I had Jury Duty today and I have to admit that this has been a smooth process, although I have lots of things I could be doing today! Nonetheless, check-in was quick, the security check was fast and none of the employees had a tude. Which I feel has happened previously in government facilities. They played good movies the spaces were clean and the bathrooms were as well. (Well for there to be 1000 people in the building they were decent). This building is super old and it's so apparent in the elevators which are always out of order. Today I had jury duty selection and we were on the 5th floor. Only one elevator was working. The stairs are for emergency exit only and the doors at the bottom of the stairs are locked. It was a total cluster trying to leave for lunch. The courtroom benches are uncomfortable and I was stuck there all day. And to make matters worse, I have to go back tomorrow because the jury wasn't fully selected. No wonder everyone hates doing their civic duty. Do better Baltimore City. read more

Jury duty. I love the architecture of the courthouse, and the history behind it. The check in process took HOURS, and I sat in a room with about 300 other people.....and waited. and waited. They need to update the waiting area to reflect the world we live in now. Some outlets and charging areas for mobile devices would be nice? The court is not the cleanest place ....but I do love the architecture. If you get called for jury duty......bring and extra battery for your phone.....and a kindle or book to read. They do show "movies". Men in Black was movie the day I was there. Seriously....a 20 year old movie? read more

Most people come to the courthouse regarding a legal issue; however, we were fortunate to come for a tour with Baltimore Heritage of the Museum of Baltimore Legal History, which was founded on October 24, 1984. Our volunteer guide was Ms. Elva Tillman, who was a host of knowledge and had the ability to deliver it as well. The museum was actually the courtroom of the Orphans Court of Baltimore City from 1900 to 1977. It is located in room 243 and is considered to be the most beautiful courtroom in Maryland with wainscoting and the judge's bench made of West Indian Saint Iago mahogany along with a gilded ceiling and parquet floors. In 1984, a group stepped in to rescue the courtroom, raised the money for its restoration, and formed the museum. The museum is filled with historical artifacts of Baltimore's Bench and Bar. The museum offers a self-guided walk-through tour, and it is free. Here you will be able to see a grandfather clock that was installed in the city's first orphan court around 1810, a copper drum that was used until the 1960s to randomly select jurors, and the original historic court opinion from 1885 that ruled black lawyers could not be denied the right to practice in the city's courts. There is a mural of "The British Surrender at Yorktown" done in 1907 by French muralist Jean-Paul Laurens. We were surprised to see the red robe on display. Evidently in the United States today, only the Maryland Court of Appeals wears red robes when hearing arguments. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to see this stunning courtroom. read more

I may be crazy for saying this one, but I actually love this Courthouse! I love the architecture of it, the decor, and just all that is capable of! I've been coming to this Courthouse almost 20 years now for different reasons, and it never disappoints! I used to come here about 20 years ago when I worked in foster care and had to come here and advocate for my children and families. Now I come when I have to go with the client as a support system while they're battling petitions, as well as recent charges! There's so much history in this building that's overlooked. My only gripe about this place is Parking! Absolutely horrible parking and no free options. Typically garage parking is the best option but sometimes I can park on the street!! read more

Jury duty here is the WORSE. This is a waste of time. They call 200 people in a room and ask all of them questions one at a time that takes a total of five hours They are better off having that same damn questionnaire online. We have to go online anyway and answer questions about our career, they minus well add those same questions and stop wasting time. It was TOO many people in one room. I was nervous. Too many people in my personal space. It felt like I was down Lexington Market or on the MTA. Miss me with Jury Duty next year please. read more

No one that I know particularly likes jury duty in ANY jurisdiction, but serving in Baltimore City is particularly painful. The courthouse is old, it's hot as hell, and the chances that you'll be selected for a trial are sparse. No outlets to plug in a laptop or a cell phone - and wifi here? Laughable. You'll be treated to moronic movies, nothing to eat or drink until they release you for lunch (where you'll then spend 10+ dollars on disgusting fast food options), and nowhere to park (unless, of course, you drop another 10 bucks in a garage somewhere - so much for the 5 bucks a day they give you, huh). The last time that I served was a colossal waste of energy. Particularly since I'm a law enforcement employee - what are the chances, ladies and gentlemen, what are the chances? LESS than zero? Want to get out of jury duty in Baltimore City? Tell the defense counsel that you're against drugs in any way, that you think law enforcement is a good thing, that you believe in criminals being punished for their crimes - you'll be dismissed faster than your brain can translate, "Thank you, you're not needed." Other types of services are just as painful and mind-numbing, whether it's applying for a divorce or child support enforcement, etc. Really, you just don't want to be here for any reason whatsoever. And I mean any reason at all. read more

I had to come here for jury duty last week, and it was...eh. Jury duty is a fact of life, but there's got to be a better way for it to be handled. The check-in process has improved, but it's still extremely slow. My main gripes are: 1. Parking. I used the garage where you get a "discount" for jury service. My fee was knocked down from $9 to $8. How generous. 2. There's only one metal detector, and the way security is set up is so inefficient. I was happy it wasn't raining because the line was out the door on almost all occasions. 3. They show the worst movies, and unfortunately the quiet room was filled to the brim with people. 4. Wi-fi is a joke. In addition to that, my phone's battery drained so quickly from trying to find a regular signal all day. Reception sucks. 5. There is a complete lack of outlets in the regular rooms, and if you don't get to the quiet room early enough, you're not going to get dibs on one there either. Make sure your devices are fully charged the night before! 6. The bathrooms are gross. Hopefully I don't get called again for awhile, because I am not looking forward to repeating this process! read more

Serving jury duty today at Mitchell Court House. The State Police/Staff at the St. Paul Entrance are rude and inconsiderate. You are herded through the entire process like cattle. Staff is disorganized giving incorrect instructions. I have had better experiences with the State Police at the St.Paul Entrance than today. Baltimore County is nothing like this. read more

Recently got married at the local courthouse! The staff up on the 6th floor was accommodating to me, my fiancé at the time and all our guest. The deputy clerk who married us was actually the same gentleman who issued us our marriage license a month prior. He was really great officiating our wedding and helped made the day really great for us both. read more

Went by today to Courthouse to get a license and postpone jury duty. It was a quick and easy visit. Went on a Monday morning around 10 AM. The first task was to get a license. The wait was no more than five minutes. There are only two other people in front of us. The lady who assisted us was pleasant and explained everything thoroughly. The process was quick. Second task was to postpone a jury duty date. There was no line, and the wait was just one or two minutes. Again the process was quick, and they explained exactly what needed to be done. Took care of everything just in about 25 minutes. Besides the difficultly parking, overall very satisfied with the visit. read more

Romance is in store for wide eyed engaged couples planning to tie the knot at the Balmer City Courthouse! Who needs ushers when Sherrif's deputies double as a uniformed escort for their charges from central booking and for the lovely bride? Who needs a pipe organ when the steady ching ching ching of fine young gentlemen shuffling off to court down the historic hallways in chains from their wrists to their ankles fills the air? An attractive perk of being a Baltimore City resident without a felony is the annual rite of Jury Duty. $15 and threats of arrest if you blow it off compensate you for a day of lost productivity and tedious boredom. They then immeditately part you with $6 for super slow wifi. Our eight city employees who streamline the productiivity of the jury process specialize in lines. There is a huge line weaving outside into the rain for the one metal detector. Next is a collosal line to sign in. Next, a forced to queue for a second sign in and fifteen bucks. When you leave for lunch or to walk over the the other courthouse, back to metal detector line. Being selected to serve on a jury is good fun. The debate in the jury room makes it crystal clear that the majority opinion will rarely side with the poolice. The fact that your name and occupation as a juror is made available to the defense is flat out scary. At the same time, Charm City residents deserve to experience a piece of Americana our county friends just can't get while they sit in traffic 45 minutes each way to work. 1,000 citizens were called to serve today, and only 100 were called in the late morning for 1 trial jury selection. Over the juror snoring and drooling while draped across three chairs, the PA interrupted the Jlo movie at 3:30. "Pay close attention, we will need a large juror pool for the next case.. Just kidding, you are dismissed." Clever stuff, but the joke is on her if she thinks her underfunded city pension will be around for long. read more

I feel a little odd writing a review of a courthouse, but if you've ever been called for jury duty (and if you live in the city you will be, it's turned into an annual event for me) you know how unpleasant it can be sitting around here all day long. The last time I was called for jury service they called so many people that they didn't have enough seats for everyone (you'd think they would've had that figured that part out by now) and then the overwhelming majority of us were never needed. I understand that it's impossible to know exactly how many people you'll need, but having compared my experience with people who've done jury duty in other jurisdictions it's clear that jury the Baltimore City Circuit Court system is very inefficient and poorly run. read more

It is not fair to force the city residents who actually show up to do it every single year while the majority of the city refuses to show with no consequences. The whole process is awful. To make 300+ people sit in a room all day for two trials and none after 11:30 is absurd. Congress also needs to look into restricting jury trials to criminal cases only. The cost to the state and the burden on its residents to sit through frivolous personal injury claims is outrageous. These cases should really be done in arbitration but if not that then by judge. I lost my mind by about 2 pm stuck in that room with so many people so I spent the last 2+ hours pacing the hallways. The rooms smell horrible by that time of day due to people returning from lunch and using the restrooms inside the waiting rooms. I think I'll be joining the rest of the city in not showing up in the future. People have jobs, kids and pets at home and generally just better damn things to do than sit through a trial for a cabbie suing the MTA over a minor car accident. The only positive is that there are bars in the area to slam back a few during the lunch break. read more
