Clare is the perfect combination of understanding listener and action-oriented coach. I was hesitant about seeking therapy since I had no idea what to expect at first. My friends and family should probably start paying Clare some royalties, as her solid advice and approach gets shared and repackaged to their benefit as well. I'll share one of her golden nuggets here: "You have to put your own oxygen mask on before you can help others." When I first started seeing Clare, she was very sympathetic about a toxic relationship from which I was trying to dis-entangle myself . Your loved ones want to provide support to you and "want the best" etc., but I am way too stubborn to let them influence my decisions, even when I know deep down they're right. Clare was that non-judgy confidant I felt able to confide in about my "bad" behavior. During that delicate time in my life, she helped provide perspective and forced me to examine my own feelings, which was really hard as I'm co-dependent and constantly trying to please other people. We are continuing to work on boundaries, refusing to let guilt eat me up, staying positive about finding a life partner (sometimes it's hard to believe, but her earnestness keeps me going), and taking care of myself overall. As an Asian American, it's not common for us to seek mental health services. Most people who don't know me well would probably be surprised at how high-functioning I am. =) Well, my secret is Clare. I revealed some of the deep, dark stuff to you because I'm truly better having known her. Also, here's another revelation - Clare suggested we cut back my sessions because she has seen how much I've improved and perhaps don't need to see her as often. What kind of business person does that (don't underestimate her ability to understand corporate life, either - she used to work for a hedge fund)? What makes Clare a successful therapist is that she is incredibly empathetic and compassionate. She is real. She connects with you. When I see her, I feel that I'm in complete confidence and that she can relate by sharing her own life experiences. In our sessions, we have laughed and we have cried together. It helps to know that someone like Clare is in your corner. In the past year that I've been seeing Clare, I always leave feeling refreshed and optimistic. It's better than a spa treatment. Therapy doesn't mean that you're clinically insane or that you go once or twice and you're completely healed. I have found it to be useful and helpful in managing my emotions better and learning how to love myself. I don't beat myself up or continue to live/hide in shame. And if I do, I now have tools to help me manage those feelings. Expressing myself through therapy has been such a wonderful addition to my life regimen. I don't drive my friends and family up the wall by spilling more than I need or burdening them with problems. Sometimes unloading too much can create negative energy and cause us to dwell and not move forward productively. It can also affect our relationships with the people in our lives. Very nervous when I first thought about going to see someone, but after having the courage I made an appointment. Clare Johnson is very approachable, comforting, and her energy really allowed me to just figure out if seeing someone was right for me. There are many types of therapists and I had to try a few before I found Clare, who is just right for me. She lets me get through a bunch of things in one session if I have a lot on my mind, or will dig deep into a big concern as well. I've been able to see her for a consistent period of time so she is able to remind me of my common pitfalls in addition to my progress. I have really appreciated that she has been flexible in meeting times so I can come in for consistent appointments even with a less than consistent work schedule.
