Effusive, energetic and very very talented, Paula and her Hair Suite gals make getting your hair cut as fun and gossip filled as it's supposed to be. The magazines are new (!) and what's more there's a good selection of trashy and trendy. So you'll have plenty of fashion to flip through as you while away an hour or so chatting with Paula as she expertly trims and styles your hair. Paula is a woman with a plan. Once she gets to know your hair, you may arrive for a trim, but if you happen to fancy a change she'll already have pictures and a whole new look in mind. Paula's consultations are as knowledgeable as they are sensible. You see, she knows I really can't be bothered styling my hair, so she's given me a cut that I only need to hang my head upside-down and blow-dry, and in two minutes it looks fabulous. And when the day comes that I fancy something different, I know Paula will already be two steps ahead of me.

Choosing a hairdresser is serious business. About as serious as the first time you learn to drive…read more Or as serious as saying yes to a wedding proposal. I have tried many hairdressers all over Sydney but have never been able to commit to just one. I find most hairdressers pretend to listen to what you have to say and then cut whatever style they are used to. I said no layers, miss. Oh you said no layers? I thought you said four layers. Too late, my bad. You can see my conundrum. Well that was until I was referred to Partners Hair. I made a booking with Joe (sometimes hard to come by) and prepared for the worst. But the moment I arrived ("Would you like some tea, coffee, water infused with strawberries ma'am?") I felt a connection to the place. Joe was wonderful. He was delightfully entertaining and all around chatty. It was like getting a haircut by your best friend. We talked about dancing, partying and our weekend hangovers that we'd been trying to put at bay, babies and boyfriends. I left feeling satisfied and confident in Joe's handiwork. Now I don't go anywhere else. I generally make appointments with Joe but have also tried Wissom, who is equally friendly and just as good with the scissors. They have a loyalty card where every three visits you receive something extra (free treatment, free product or free hair cut) and they send you birthday specials via text message. Once I even received a message for a discount haircut because they noticed I hadn't been in awhile (I'm lazy like that). If that is not true customer service, I don't know what is.

I am a little funny about my hair. While I often indulge in pompous products and fancy styling (by…read morewhich I mean, I take a straightener to it with reckless abandon), I don't always put forth the same amount of care when choosing a stylist. When it's time, it's TIME. Most recently, I found myself with hair reminiscent of the homeless lady that patrols Glebe Point Road, and so I set out to find someone to remedy it. A short Google search later, I discovered the nearby Partners Hair Workshop and BAM, booked for that afternoon. So first of all, they were doing a spectacular 30% off for first time customers, free deep conditioning special. What's more, I was offered a glass of white while I sat down for my consultation (which turned into 2, I mean, right?). My hairdresser Max listened closely to what I was after, gave some good input and got to work chopping. He worked quickly and amused me all the while with his stories of big nights out on Oxford St. As I slurped the last of my wine, he went to town with the blow dryer and about 5 round brushes to achieve the "bouncy" look. At the end of my appointment I ended up with a kickass haircut and a new possible best friend. It just took one wash to bring my 80s prom queen-esque styling into the current decade but I must admit, the cut was a great one- well shaped, good layering and the perfect amount of fringe. Go see Max, he's definitely a kick and the boy knows his scissors.

They have standard hours, open 9am to 5pm most days, until 9pm Thursday's and until 4pm Saturday's, not open Sunday. They do any style you would like, I've seen people come in and have all their hair cut off, others gone from dark to light, some with intricate designs. I have waist length hair and every time I come I let the girls style my hair however they like which they all enjoy. You can see them wracking their brains to try to come up with something new and exciting. I've been here when plenty of kids come through and they usually are able to keep them entertained while getting their hair done, either by changing the channel on the tv or having one of thee other girls distract them. As a regular myself I've noticed they have a ton of other regulars. I would highly recommend everything come to this salon.

Embarrassingly I was a bit apprehensive about a male cutting my hair but he gave me the best cut I had ever had and straight away regret my quick judgement. Chris immediately sat me down and we discussed what look, cut and colour I was looking for. He took his time to explain exactly step by step what he was going to do. The result was a perfect blonde and the cut was perfect. At last I found my hairdresser! Will be back.

After crying over a bad cut and dry, a friend referred me to Prema. She went to their Bondi salon…read morebut she said they had one in Surry Hills. How much? Expensive, she said. But don't worry, it's all worth it. At a starting price of $75, it better be! I made the appointment and booked in the advanced stylist (a "new talent stylist" charges $75 and the "advanced stylist" charges $95, and so and so forth). I started off with something called the "Prema Ritual" where the stylist rubbed aromatherapy oils on her hands, got me to inhale the oils, and then gave me a head and shoulder massage that lasted about 5 to 10 minutes (just make sure you inform your stylist if you have any shoulder/neck/back injuries). I love massages...so far so good. The coolest part of the salon is the room where your hair gets washed. When I sat down in the chair with my hair in the sink, the entire wall that I was facing was plastered with Warholian and vintage posters of Marilyn Monroe, David Bowie, No Doubt, The Beatles, The Stones, etc etc. It's something to keep looking at, until you fall asleep while getting massage number 2 during the wash. My first haircut was a repair job from a bad haircut I had previously, and was excellent. The girl who cut my hair gave me ideas on what would suit me and allow me to maintain with ease until my next book-in. Three months later, I was back in for another cut with my original stylist. This time, I wanted a fringe (keeping in mind my first haircut at Prema rescued me from a bad fringe), but maybe I was unsure. Okay, she said, let's leave it for now and if I still felt strongly about getting a fringe, we could talk about it the next time. Three months later I was back and I wanted the fringe. I had seen a photo of Alesha Dixon and she looked hot and I wanted to look like Alesha, so please please please. No, she said to me. I was allowed side bangs and layers, but no fringe. She cut them until they fit nicely as side bangs, but that's as far as she would go. Grudgingly, I had to agree, I was rocking those side bangs. Damn it, fine, you win. Occasionally I'll flick a suggestion towards her and get her opinion on what would look good (my last haircut was drastically different with top layers and beautifully executed). Since then, I've sent many a friend her way, and they've all come back happy customers. In an industry where stylists refuse to be accountable for their mistakes, deliver poor advice, or overcharge, the honesty and skill exercised by Prema stylists is refreshing. The salon is really trendy and can be intimidating for someone who is used to more casual places. Stylists are dressed up, hair is a feature (yes!) and comes in a variety of colors, positions, layers, and looks. But the salon has a good focus on customer service so that makes it less stressful.

A couple weekends ago, I had my second wedding reception here in Sydney, and I needed a place that…read moreI could wholly trust with my hair and makeup (as well as for my mom). Since I was living in Canada up until the day before the reception, I didn't have a chance to do a trial, so I needed to make sure the people here were excellent. The man (I think his name was Sean?) who did my makeup, hair, as well as my mom's makeup, was superb. I showed him some inspo pics for what I wanted, and he understood immediately how to draw that style onto my face. A major concern I always have is makeup artists and hair stylists not being experienced with Asian faces, especially since I have monolids, but Sean was fantastic in understanding what parts of my face to highlight and lowlight. He explained that he actually teaches makeup and spends a full lesson just going over Asian faces; explains a lot. My mom was also very impressed by her makeup; no complaints from either of us! Hair for both of us was great; there were a few things we wished later they had secured a bit better, but overall, it looked great. Service/friendliness was fantastic, and this is a place I'd definitely come back to when I need my hair did for a special occasion :)
