On my most recent mini-vacation in Portland, I made a list of the statues that I wanted to make a point of visiting and contemplating. Well, this is one of those statues that I sought out. I am a fan of the odd, the different, the things that can fade in to the background while going about your daily life and trying to bring it to the front of my attention and pointing out for others to think about.
City Reflections was designed by American artist Patti Warashina, who was inspired by life on a public walkway in an urban environment. Supposedly, it is a "stylized version of a strong female in both a classical and minimal form", while the dog serves as a "counterbalance" and is the "friendly canine companion that is so much a part of our popular culture". Both sculptures feature black and copper geometric shapes. According to lore, the black shapes allude to aspects of the human body as well as the "shapes and shadows" of nearby buildings. The copper shapes represent "computer-generated forms, which speak to the times we live in".
I do not know about all of that, but I do find that this sculpture is interesting to look at, and the back story is something to think about. read more
