This area is North what I was expecting. When I saw how lovely it is up here, I Side deeply and…read moredecided to write a good review about it. The Northside of Houston is magical, and I don't mean in terms of traffic or crime, but I do mean in terms of food and culture, as it is one of the most heavily Hispanic neighbourhoods, and in other parts it's one of the most African-American parts of Houston. And so the culture and food in all of these areas is rich and amazing, even as the demographics are poor, and the highway through here - Interstate 45 - is truly and statistically a death trap. Dallas and Houston nothing alike. HOU has more in common with Queens (NYC) and L.A. than Dallas. It is criminally underrated, nearly as pretty as San Antonio, way cooler than Austin and Dallas. One of the most ethnically diverse, exciting cities in the world. With the food to prove it. For this reason we come up here whenever we can and these are some of the food highlights: These on the North Side: Tostada Regia - mole w pechuga, salsas, everything Asia Market Thai Lao - Green or Massaman Curry with Shrimp or Veggies, Thai Hot, Thai Iced Tea or Lime Thai Iced Tea. El Bolillo - warm Bolillos Tacos La Bala - Torta de Cochinita Pibil, Charro Beans, Gordita de Trompo Angie's - chicken fried steak, chicken & dumplings Taconazo Truck - Asada tacos and Charro Beans. Cocina Latina Pupusa Buffet - pupusas, tamales El Pibe - paletas Mighty Sweet Mini Pies And the rest of the list: Top 10 Himalaya - hara masala, rocket naan, boti Peri Peri Factory - inferno chicken Darband - #6 Hunan Bistro - Lamb Cumin, Hot N Spicy Chicken (Dry), and the Sizzling Tofu Seafood (ask for it spicy). Banana Leaf - Char Kway Tow, Belacan Fried Rice (both extra spicy) Tofu Village - Yuk Gae Jang (extra spicy) Zydeco - crawfish etoufee, gumbo Hot Bagel Shop - jalapeno sausage, everything bagel Nguyen Ngo Banh Mi on warm Croissant Yori Yori - Yuk Gae Jang, Soon Du Bu (seafood), Kung Fu Tea is here too! Les Givrals - Banh Mi Spring Roll Express - crispy pork banh mi, spring rolls Nara Express - panang curry, green curry, thai basil fried rice Ramen Okidoki - lim's fried chicken spicy Lankford Grocery - burger Xin Jiang - lamb cumin Pollo Bravo Ekko's - gyros Gyros & Shish - gyros Doumar's - gyros Lee's Sandwiches - viet iced coffee East Wall - flat noodles w chicken, snow pea leaves spicy Fufu - fried rice w salt fish and shrimp, open til 2am Bijan - persian Los Perros - chicken kebab skewer Triple J Smokehouse - bbq Killen's - rib Luigi's - slices Salata - cleanse with salad Dessert: Nu Ice or Nu Cafe (ribbon ice) Shipley - only when hot Coco & Cane Boba: TeaFix - the best viet coffee ever Feng Cha - dirty boba and cakes and kiwi Presotea - milk tea Mr Wish - fiber jelly drinks and wish special and waffle cakes w custard! Fuji Tea - Assam milk tea Yum Cha - best kiwi and other fruit drinks Purple Kow - milk teas and fruit teas! only location outside SF Someday I might buy a "Hous" in Houston. It's where the TV show "Hous" was filmed. It was also the setting for the movies "Hou Framed Roger Rabbit", "Hous That Girl?" and "Hous Of 1,000 Corpses."

I got called for jury duty recently. I had no idea it was traffic court. I know it's my civic duty,…read morebut what a long boring day! I didn't expect this to be a fun filled day, but a review is still necessary. From the start, I was annoyed I couldn't find the "H" parking lot to use my jury duty free parking coupon from my jury summons letter. I thought it was just me. I ended up using the parking directly across from the building. There were plenty of spots when I arrived at 8:34 AM. My duty didn't start until 9:30 AM, but lucky me, I was early - heavy eye roll! The first parking meter closest to my spot that I attempted to use was broken. Nothing showed up on the screen to start my ticket purchase. I walked to the next meter in the middle of the lot. Anyone wanna guess if it worked. Correct, it did not! I moved a couple steps over and tried the third one. Finally! A working meter! Thankfully it wasn't raining, but even at 8:30ish AM in Houston, it is still hot. I was not pleased I had to try so many meters. $5.00 for 4 hours or $10.00 for the whole day. I opted for the whole day since I had no idea what time I would end up being released. I walked back to my car and placed the ticket on my dash. I also took a photo of it to have on my phone just in case. As I entered the building, I was greeted and told to remove my shoes. I get it, but the mat I had to walk on, while barefoot, was so dirty. I finally got my belongings and headed to the jury waiting room. The jury administrator was kind. I handed her my summons and she asked if I parked in "H". I told her I couldn't find it, but that I did self-pay in the lot across the street. Then, I took my seat. As more people entered, I kept hearing them say they too could not find "H". Phew! It wasn't just me. I heard at least 7 or 8 people say they couldn't find the free juror parking lot. We eventually were told about the process and due to the low number of cases, we would probably be released BEFORE lunch time. The judge swore us in and we started our long day of sitting. We were free to come and go and use devices. A bathroom is located directly outside the juror room. Down the hallway is a little area with multiple vending machines. I was surprised the prices weren't crazy expensive. One vending machine takes Apple Pay via your iPhone, so that was cool. The other machines took cash, coins, and credit cards. You are allowed to eat and drink in the juror room. In fact, most people had their own drinks they brought along with backpacks, and a couple people even had a lunch kit. I had no idea you could bring all that. I will be more prepared next time. As lunch time came and we were all still there, we were dismissed for an hour to get a bite to eat. A food service called Fooda was in the vending machine area with 3 types of chicken options at $15.14 each after tax. The serving portion was large, but the taste was not that great. I got the curry chicken. Maybe I should have gotten something else. We returned to the room for more waiting. No one ever got called and we finally got released at 3:10 PM. All this for traffic court and only $6.00 paid for the service. After my gas, mileage, time away from work, parking at $10.00, 2 waters at $2.00 each, lunch at $15.14, and my snack at $1.35, a $6.00 pay is insulting. And again, all for traffic court?? The people who don't want to pay their ticket put all of our day on hold. Maybe I don't understand it fully, so maybe it should be explained better. My suggestion would be to have the free parking more identifiable, fix your meters, lower the price of parking if not using the free lot, clean the entrance mat, offer free bottled water, offer one free snack in AM and one free snack in the PM, lower the price of your lunch service, and up the price on what is paid to the juror. My time is valuable as I know everyone else's is too. It's a hard hit on people who are trying to do the right thing.

People were stationed at the entrance to also help guide you to where you need to be, 2 different people were so kind to make sure I knew where I was going. Arrived to my court room and the officer taking attendance was very helpful as he told me I needed to talk to the clerk to see why I wasn't on the docket. I approached the clerk who was very welcoming and helpful, she printed out my new court date, apparently my attorney's office was on vacation so the date was changed. Over all clean courtroom, plenty of parking out front, $5 for 4 hours.

Yours truly got called in to do her civic duty. I may not serve in the military, but I can serve…read morethis country by aiding in giving people their due process. This place is way the heck out there and is actually a police station! As it was originally built for and still is a police station, things get weird for jurors from here on out... The purpose of this court is to provide jury trials for those who wish to contest minor offenses like very minor assaults (pushing people), traffic moving violations, etc. Therefore, you will only be needed for one business day. SCORE! ARRIVAL TIME: They request that you be promptly there at 9am, but the guy who manages jurors is super friendly and is understanding if you get there at 9 WITHOUT that form filled out. UPON ARRIVAL: You will encounter a security guard and a metal detector. They will have you pass TSA-style sans shoes through that detector and inspect whatever you brought with you. JUROR WAITING ROOM: They have a super tiny room in which they keep about 2 dozen jurors who have also been summoned. There are only two AC units, and so it can get stuffy. There's hardly any room to walk, but you'll survive. They have a TV in the corner of the room that softly plays CNN. REFRESHMENTS / BATHROOM: I'm sure there is a bathroom. I didn't check it out and therefore can't review. Outside of the juror waiting room are two vending machines -- one for sodas and water, one for mainly junk food snacks. Bring some pocket change. THE COURTROOM: We were called into the court room at 11am. (So, note to self, bring something to do or to read.) We were promptly notified by the Honorable Judge that we would not be needed as jurors for the remainder of the day, that she had been able to settle anything without needing jurors. As it is a police station, there is a huge pylon in the middle of the courtroom that may make it hard for you to see the judge... EXIT PROCESS: We then were escorted out of the room. The guy who manages jurors met us. He had us sign something that acknowledged we showed. You can choose to get a $6 check in the mail as compensation or choose to have it donated back to the City of Houston, but not as a tax write-off. This guy will give you a certificate of gratitude for your time and can fill out an excuse for work, if need be. SPECIAL NOTE -- PLEASE READ: This guy said that even if you serve the Municipal Courts, that does not exempt you from serving at the Downtown Court for more complex (read: lengthier) trials in the same calendar year. Be advised!

North what I was expecting…read more North Houston is a land that I don't venture to very often. It's pretty built up, somewhat lower income compared to West Houston, parts of it anyway, and has a lot of people. When we come to this part of town, it usually is to try some of the great food, such as the Latin foods, and there's a lot of great African-American Foods in the Northeast portion (such as Burns BBQ), and then if you go a little further north into the Spring area you can get some good Vietnamese places, good Boba and whatnot. Cypress and Woodlands are bougie areas, but they have a few treats in them too. And there's some good stuff over towards the Northwest as well, including some wonderful Latin and Korean areas. I don't love the traffic on the highways during the weekdays up here - especially on 45, and parts of 610, but generally it's cool - and one of our favourite Thai restaurants is up this way as well. The one problem is that the Heights (where Barbi lived for years) are creeping up into other neighbourhoods and starting to expand, which means the rich people (of the Heights) are pushing northwards, and they're also pushing Southwards from the Woodlands, so before you know it this whole entire massive portion of Houston might be gentrified, and I will be sad. But that's the way it goes. Houston is one of my favourite cities in the world. It's the 4th city in the country, the true capital of the south (sorry Dallas, sorry Atlanta, sorrynotsorry Austin). Its food and the thrill of living here is comparable to the other 3 great cities in the US (NYC LA CHI). When on the Northside, try Tostada Regia on Airline, try Asia Market Thai Lao on Main (not the other one), and try El Bolillo. Here are some more local greats to eat and drink: A 5 star city, and so, so unfairly maligned. Food paradise. Ethnic melting pot.
