There's nothing wrong with having a hero - or heroes. The City of Wayne, Michigan is lucky to have such men and women who live their lives in an exemplary fashion. They walk among us each day.
Here is the story of heroes that lived in Wayne long ago but whose actions and sacrifice reverberate on today in the preservation of our freedom and lives we may live.

Background -
I started working on this search and project about three years ago.
I was working with Main Street and some conversation came up about historical markers. At the time I hadn't noticed any statuary around the city. Nothing that brought to mind the historical aspects of the place or the people who lived here.
I learned about Ezra Derby and during that time mention was made of his son. Just briefly, in some pamphlet or booklet. It said he had served in the Civil War.
I asked the City of Wayne Historical Museum for any information they had and Mr. Storey kindly looked into for me. He retrieved a compact set of materials that answered the questions I asked but as soon as I read through it more questions presented themselves.
Here was a man and a mystery of a life tied to the man widely regarded as the Founder of the City of Wayne. Most of us know the unfortunate of Mr. Simmons who, reportedly, in a wildly drunken rage killed his wife. For this he was tried, found guilty and hung by the neck until dead down in the City of Detroit.
The drama and real pain attached to that incident lingered until Mr. Derby purchased the land from Mr. Simmons' children and then commenced with intent to work to improve the area.
About Mr. Ezra Derby, our esteemed founder, we have some information and generally it is agreed he came over from Massachusetts to pioneer here in Michigan. His history is likely very interesting and perhaps someone, someday, might make a foray to discover more clearly our roots that sprung there from back east, in one of the States that had been one of the original 13 colonies of our nation - the Great State of Massachusetts.
Our story and concern here, however, has to do with the Founder's son. His name, as mentioned, was Ezra E. Derby. As a point of fact, and facts I will give you in abundance, I have to state, that I still do not know what Mr. Derby's middle initial stands for. I won't guess and will continue to refer to him as Ezra E. Derby, so that we can be sure of the personage of whom we are talking about.
As we progress you will find that he was, like yourself, a singular individual and person worthy of respect of honor. We are going to hear the names of people and places who have played a large part in the history of our nation and this state. They are big names. They are taught to us in the schools and we study their decisions and act upon them still to do this day. I ask you to consider Ezra E. Derby and the other local personages I will mention to be as your neighbors and possibly your friend. We can certainly look upon the elder Mr. Derby as our benefactor but there is something else here altogether that his son, and our hero, Ezra E. Derby has given us.
Let us first set the international stage in a general way and the national stage in a particular way.
On March 2, 1835 the Republic of Texas declared itself independent from the Republic of Mexico. The Mexican government did not appreciate this and promptly invaded the new country of the Republic of Texas in order to reclaim its territory.
The new country of Texas likewise took a dim view on this intercession and began to battle with the Mexicans. We are likely familiar with the Battle of the Alamo which took place between the dates of February 23 to March 6, 1836.
The result of that battle and the arrival of General Sam Houston's troops shortly thereafter led to the Battle of San Jacinto which occurred on April 21, 1836 and took approximately 18 minutes to complete.
I bring this particular battle to your attention in this story to mark the behavior that was then common among organized armies of the old and new worlds. They fought under what would be considered the Napoleonic Order of War. They fought at certain time and in certain ways. We'll hear a little bit more of this later.
Early the next year, by the way, on January 26, 1837, the State of Michigan entered the Union of the United States of America as a brand new state.
Mr. Ezra E. Derby was born, then, to begin our story, proper, in the year 1840. Again, on this item, and I must beg your pardon, I do not have the exact date but I can tell you with some assurance, a little more of what was going on in the world at that time.
In 1845 the United States annexed the Republic of Texas a new state entered the Union.
So, when 5 years old, the United States that Ezra E. Derby lived in as a little boy was enlarged quite a bit.
In 1846 the Oregon boundary read more
