What a well organized, interesting, informative event!! I've never been to an air show before, but I think I've been spoiled by this amazing event we attended the first weekend of August... Not sure how future shows will measure up (and with my everything flight-related SUPER FAN husband, there's bound to be more!!) From the super organized parking, to the loooooong but very smoothly run entry and security lines, the clear, easy to follow schedule of events, food area that was well-set up (so-so food, but wasn't expecting gourmet deluxe!!), to the awesome exhibits and planes, this was definitely a well planned and set up event from start to finish. My only "ding" would be that it was HOT and there were nowhere near enough shaded areas, but is what it is out on an airfield... We went specifically because the Mr.'s a HUGE fan of the Corsair airplanes, which were showcased at this event. His head nearly exploded several times over the course of the day, first just seeing all those fine pieces of machinery in one place, then at the end of the day when they all started up, unfolded their wings (real unique plane!!) and took off (then landed/refolded their wings) in unison. Well worth the cost of admission, especially the discounted "early bird special" he got, which was a great deal w/a year's membership for us to the Yankee Air Museum (and reciprocated with MANY other similar museums). This festival attracted us from "next door" in Ohioooo, but we also came across other attendees from around the country. Don't miss it, if you're an aviation fan. We'll be back!!

I had heard of this show, but never been, even growing up in Toledo. When I heard about the gathering of Corsairs, I had to come, since it's my favorite WW2 plane. I got advance tickets and parking. Prices are indeed high, so buy ahead of time. Was it worth it? Yes. To someone like me, anyway. I've been to Oshkosh dozens of times, and many other shows. This is a smaller one, and more geared to historic aircraft. Plenty of signage and a good website to guide you in. Plenty of parking, reasonably close. Rough field though. The museum was open, for free, and was a welcome respite with shade and bathrooms. They sell rides in an assortment of aircraft (out on the flightline) and prices are actually competitive. Expensive, and I passed but was tempted. But go anywhere else and they are about the same. A good number of ground displays, including some oddities like a Luftwaffe A400, an L-5 ambulance, and a static EC-121. Many of the bigger planes were open for tours. There was a morning show and an afternoon one, with warbird displays, reenactors in a mock battle, aerobatics, an F-16 display in the afternoon, and of course mass flights of the Corsairs. I was grinning often. There were a decent amount of food choices, and lines weren't too long. Expensive, yes, but again, competitive for airshows. I recommend bringing your own water and snacks, and only getting a cold drink or two here. Also: hat, sunscreen, good shoes, maybe a light folding chair, battery stick for your phone/camera. I'd come back. It's a haul for me, but if they had something interesting like the Corsairs, it would be worth it. We visited friends while we were here, so it made for a good trip. If Baby K were a few years older, I would have brought her for a half day (kids under 15 are free!)

Prior to attending I definitely winced when I heard the price of admission. But the sheer joy on my airplane-obsessed husband's face when we watched all the incredible stunts and planes go through was worth every penny. It's just such a blast and I can't believe we've never been before this year. There are aircrafts on display on the grounds for folks to explore and get up and close and personal with. Great photo ops from planes as far back as WW2. Throughout the weekend several impressive aircrafts fly over Willow Run and the surrounding areas, culminating with an impressive show by the Blue Angels. You can certainly see a lot of the show around Willow Run (lots of cars parked up and down Michigan Avenue, and we event saw a lot of the show the day before we went from my mom's backyard in Canton) but there's nothing like being right there in the thick of it, watching those jets pass right in front of you. It's amazing! Protips: Bring sunscreen, there's not much by way of tents or protection from the sun. The grounds are pretty much just an open field/parking lot. I believe there may be some VIP tents but we didn't spring for those so I didn't pay super close attention to the availability. Food and drink is also onsite but we didn't take advantage of any of that either, so I can't comment on pricing/quality, but if you're interested in snacks or sips they do have them.

Where the plane landed after hitting a tree. Without hitting the tree the plane would've gone into the building and killed everyone inside.

BURN IN HELL Or at…read moreleast while attached to a hearse. The man that designed this custom built bar and grill does just that at least once a year when he treks with the trailer to Hell, Michigan with his "open casket" grill. The grill, which was built over the course of 80 to 100 hours at The TechShop of Allen Park, is made out of a modified casket. The shell of the casket is mounted to a portable tow-behind trailer, so it draws onlookers when being transported behind a hearse, but with no visible tie-downs. (Video of the creator talking about the grill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0RXI8DHWgo) It contains a four-burner stainless steel grill that boasts 48,000 Btu of power. It boasts 496 square inches of cooking space, with electronic ignition and porcelain-coated, heavy-gauge wire cooking grates and a 20-pound propane tank. The other half of the casket includes a marine style waterproof radio and a 27-gallon cooler with built-in drainage features. Of course, the grill wouldn't be complete without tools that all have "Open Casket Bar and Grill" laser etched into their handles, and custom-made salt and pepper shakers. Why a hearse? Because the creator, Steven Frye, is also the founder of the Nightmare Cruisers Hearse Club for car enthusiasts. The club boasts more than 120 members, mostly from around Michigan, though some join from across the country. "We like to get together and do the cruises," Frey said. "When we do these cruises, we like to hang out with our friends, old friends and new friends. Anyone that has a hearse is welcome to join us, even if you are just a hearse enthusiast." Frey first bought his hearse to promote a product, "Dr. Frybrain's Pumpkin Embalmer," though most people thought it was just a name for his hearse, rather than an actual product. After a couple of years of explaining the product on the car, Frey grew tired of answering questions and instead just painted over the advertising. For a time, the club also held the record for most hearses assembled in a parade in 2011. Frey said the rule for any gathering of cars is that is has to be a parade; otherwise, the record would be held by the manufacturer. "We held the record for about 11 months," he said. "Then a group in the Netherlands broke the record. Almost all of them were 'in the business,' though. Only three of our hearses were owned by funeral homes.

I've seen other casket grills, and none of them even compare. This one looks like it came direct from the factory. No other casket grill has a built in cooler, or on-board tunes! They normally only cook for club members, but you can generally get a casket-grilled hot dog for a donation to charity! Well done!

The naked mile hasn't been the same since about 1999…read more That was the biggest year ever, when hundreds of students ran naked down South University Street, across the Diag and into Regents Plaza, (some of them celebrated by wading through the fountain near the student union, or by giving the cube a spin), and tens of thousands turned out to watch them run. I was new to U of M in 1998, and I had no idea that there was any such event, so I was a little surprised to leave Angell Hall one evening and find naked students streaming across the diag and up the steps of the art museum. Among other things, I learned that evening that people without clothes really need to be carefully posed to look good. Running doesn't help, and I imagine stop motion photography is worse. The tradition of running naked on the last day of classes started in 1986 when a group of athletes did it on a whim. The event got bigger every year until University President Lee Bollinger, a very dour man, made a fuss about it, and the police started threatening to arrest naked people, something they still haven't done, as far as I know. The American Pie sequel is based on the real Naked Mile at U of M. Personally, I think a lot of presidential hopes will be dashed by the photos that were taken that night in 1999, but I never saw any harm in letting the students have their little romp. I'm sure there is still some surreptitious streaking going on around the end of the semester, even now.

Hamtramck Banksy Authenticated…read more (Posted on April 1, 2014 by Hillary) A stencil on the corner of Sobieski and Commor in Hamtramck was painted by none other than British street artist Banksy. This work is based on an earlier piece, "Laugh Now", commissioned for a Brighton night club in 2002. The new message can only be a reference to the 555 Gallery and their intention to sell part of a wall taken from the Packard Plant in Detroit. We couldn't believe it either, but when we heard from a friend of a friend that Banksy had again visited Detroit to make a statement about "commercialism, capitalism and the mechanics of the art market", we sent a request to Pest Control, a service that issues certificates on behalf of the artist. Despite their promise of a "lengthy and challenging process", they were quick to reply in this case. "Graffiti art has a hard enough life as it is - with council workers wanting to remove it and kids wanting to draw moustaches on it, before you add hedge-fund managers wanting to chop it out and hang it over the fireplace." "For the sake of keeping all street art where it belongs I'd encourage people not to buy anything by anybody unless it was created for sale in the first place." This entry was posted in Hamtramck by Hillary. This proved to be an April Fool's joke, but we had tons of fun visiting and discussing Albert Kahn, the Packard Plant, Banksy, the Packard Banksy, the 555 Gallery, and this "Banksy".

But that means there is also not much to offer in the way of excitement for the visitor. Other than being a lodging town for the activities at nearby Michigan Speedway, we see very few visitors in town. But there are some subtle niceties about Adrian that would interest those hardcore explorers who like to peel back the layers to experience the variety of everyday life in the US. Adrian has little in the way of touristy attractions. The vintage downtown area is a starting point. A two-by-two block area is decently preserved and fun to stroll. In that downtown area you'll find the Croswell Opera House, Michigan's oldest theater. The historic interior is quite lovely and worth a look. For fans of small museums, the Lenawee Historical Museum is a nice stop to acclimate to the history of the area. After that, the festivals are of interest. Artalicious in the summer draws a good crowd from around the region. The four downtown blocks are closed to traffic while booths and artisans line the streets. First Fridays mimics this on a smaller scale but on a more frequent basis (first Friday of each month). Shops typically stay open later on these special days. There's also a Halloween celebration during which local businesses and organizations set up with tables on the downtown sidewalks to give out goodies to the kids. It's also worth mentioning the parks. The River Raisin runs through Trestle Park, which has a nice boardwalk that facilitates strolls through a wetland patch. Comstock Park is quite a sight around the Holidays with end-to-end Christmas Trees that are sponsored by different organizations, families or individuals. Heritage Park is also a nice spot and Riverside Park offers a public pool. In a town of 20,000 people, you'd expect there to be a few good restaurants...and there are. My favorite in town is Fiesta Ranchera which offers tasty Mexican and Tex-Mex fare. You can get some creative burgers and fries at Chomp Burger on the edge of downtown. For comfort food, Tip Top is the...wait for it...top choice. Brenda's is a great Tex-Mex "hole in the wall" downtown. And JRs deserves mention if you like steak. For a nightcap, try Mammoth downtown. For a touch of class, Chaloners cigar bar is a fun spot. While Adrian is not a scintillating place to visit, there are some hidden, low-key things to do that might make it fun to spend a day here. If you're so inclined, hopefully these suggestions are helpful.

There are a bunch of toddler and kid rides which was just what we wanted. One adult wristband was enough to go on a few additional rides with our 5 year old. We brought lunch and ate at covered picnic tables. It was hot, and as adults we were sort of miserable trudging all over the blacktop, but our kids had so much fun and 6 months later, are still talking about it.
