Moab Museum - The story about recreation in Moab

There was minimal focus on the Settlers and the founding of the town. There was not much history telling daily life of the settlers before the uranium discovery. There was barely any mention of surrounding environment and the native Americans relationships to the settlers. Overall, it was a good way to spend an hour to an hour and a half. Admission price was $10 for adult and $8 for Senor. Free parking in front of the museum.

Aside from modern day Moab being a big tourist destination and jumping off point for adventures in places like Arches NP and Canyonlands NP I didn't know much about its origins so I was excited to visit the Moab Museum. The museum is one large room and while you can view the exhibits in any order I found it was best to start at the very beginning and work my way clockwise. The museum starts with the indigenous people who lived in modern day Moab and ends with Moab being central to two national parks and a recreation hub. Missionaries, fur trappers, cowboys, miners, adventurists and dinosaurs were all covered in between. My favorite exhibit was about William Grandstaff. The exhibit called "Tracing the Story of William Grandstaff" traces his roots from likely being enslaved in Virginia to becoming a Civil War era soldier, frontiersmen, pioneer, cowboy, miner and saloon manager in Utah and Colorado. I love when museums leave me wanting to know more and William Grandstaff is definitely someone who'd I'd like to learn more about. I'd also like to hike the trail named in his honor - the Grandstaff Trail in Grandstaff Canyon. One of the best features of the museum were historical pictures of the Moab area that you could scroll through on a tablet. The photos really helped me understand the history of Moab. Admission was $10 for an adult and I felt it was well worth it. The museum has a good bit of reading, some artifacts and a few interactive exhibits sprinkled in so some kids might be a little bored but I really enjoyed it. Kids 7 and under visit for free and students are $8.

It had me contemplating our current existence and what things would look like 2,000 years from now. It was right off the road with a small parking lot with vault toilets. I came during the off season so the lot was empty, but it gets busy enough that there are traffic signs preventing people from parking on the road. Free to park and walk on the sidewalk to the cliff face.

I fixed the pin drop marker here on Yelp, but these things can be finicky. It's marked and on the side of the road, but GPS crowds can set to: 37.9879209, -109.5188924. Man, I really love this spot. I mean, it's a nice little get-out-and-stretch and won't take you more than a few minutes, but it's a nice roadside pull-off when you're already off and rolling on adventure. I first visited in 2005 or so and was struck by just how prolific all the petroglyphs are. Sometimes you only see a few in one place, but here at Newspaper Rock, it's plastered with characters. Pull off the highway, park, and walk up the paved path. It'll take you less than two minutes, so almost anyone from grandma to the little ones can make it. There's a small fence at the base of the rock to keep you from touching the panel, but you get a front row seat to the artwork. This is very near a campground, but there is a small toilet facility here so you can hit that up before you get into the park, or out to Lockhart, or wherever your travels are taking you. Note that this is not the only panel in the area. If you keep driving, pay attention to the cliffs and the walls around you--you can spy a few characters. But they're sparse, and in comparison to this amazing display, they may barely register. That's what makes this mysterious spot (but why were ancient inhabitants all tagging it???) so wonderful.

GREAT DOWNTOWN AREA TO WALK AROUND…read more====================================== If you are driving from Los Angeles to Denver in the summer this is a good place to stay overnight. I didn't include the winter because you don't want to drive at night in the middle of no man's land on that long stretch west of Grand Junction. We usually just stay one night, but there are lots of things to do in the area. The Colorado River is nearby, the Dinosaur Museum, off-roading trails, hiking, mountain biking, snow skiing and lots of other things. I was really impressed by Grand Junction's Main Street with all the restaurants and shops. If you stay in Grand Junction try to find a hotel or Airbnb near Main Street. You won't have to drive to go out to lunch or dinner because there are plenty of spots.

Thank God for that because these small businesses truly are what makes a city wonderful. GJ might be a little rough around the edges, but anyone can see the amount of work that's gone into building a diverse community of business, industry, and residence. It's been about 9 years since I've visited GJ, and I was surprised to see the amount of growth. That growth likely means jobs and making a living toward the American dream. A quick real estate search returned several affordable options - I know if I were seeking to live here, I'd like to find something with a view. The plains, the mountains, either one can be found here if you're patient. It's easy to understand why surrounding cities make Grand Junction a regular stop for errands or a short getaway for a meal. It's relatively relaxing and easy to find or drive to anything you're looking for. I'm glad I made the trip. Next time, I'll scope out a nifty restaurant or three.

I used to have nothing but great things to say about Tiara Rado Golf Course, but that opinion has…read morechanged drastically, and I was proven wrong. My group and I have golfed at this course multiple times and LOVED it! Our last visit was probably the worst interaction I have ever had with a business in my entire life. People make mistakes which is understandable because we are humans. It was not busy and our group got holes #13 and #16 mixed up because they are right next to each other, an easy mistake that I am sure others have made before too. We tried to correct the mistake as seamlessly as possible to avoid disrupting the other golfers (wasn't very busy but now it makes sense knowing how people are treated here.) We decided to skip the hole we missed and continue on our way ensuring the people in front of us were okay with that and behind us. While we are waiting the marshall comes up and I kid you not shoved his finger in one of our faces and is just screaming profanities and being so aggressive. I have never seen somebody act like that and I thought he might be having a medical emergency based on his behavior. While I do know that some people do not know how to control themselves or speak to others in a human way I could not even justify the behavior demonstrated by the marshall. He would not even let our group say a word to explain the mistake which could've cleared up the entire problem. He chose to instead scream and disrupt every person on the back 9 who was trying to play. He went away after people came up trying to defend our group and get him to stop. Once again he drove up when he saw we were alone and decided it would be professional to continue yelling at us, once again, at that point, we were not doing anything wrong. The group behind us ended up joining ours, so we can just hurry up and get out of there. Once we finished, we went into the pro shop to see if there was somebody to talk to about his behavior. He was waiting there for us and still was aggressive, he is quoted telling me, "Don't shake your head like you know," once again talking down on us, targeting a woman. He chose to stand there and laugh and smile while our group expressed our concerns in a respectful manner. He chose to pick on our group and take his anger out on us for lord knows why. We were greeted with no respect here, and it honestly shocked me. We decided to leave and just get the director of golf's information, and once again the marshall, Woody's, behavior was completely dismissed and ignored. If a place allows a staff member to treat their customers like that I want no part in supporting that business. I am appalled at the behavior and actions of the staff at this course. If you feel like getting yelled at and degraded by a staff member this is the course for you! I also want to add that a Marshell's job is supposed to be to monitor the pace of play around the course. It took us 7 hours to finish 18 holes of golf. So on top of rude and aggressive treatment clearly the marshall isn't doing his job. Maybe a training on professionalism is needed.
