City lit offers an amazing breadth and range of courses on such a variety of disciplines. I'm doing some short term courses related to food and quite enjoying them. The quality of faculty that I have interacted with has been very good, but I obviously cannot generalise that to all the faculty. Classrooms are large and spacious. Enough elevators, washrooms on alternate floors. A cute little cafeteria downstairs that serves good coffee. Will check out some pastries the next time I'm there. City lit is meant to focus on continuing education and they offer a huge range of vocational subjects too. I saw a lot of posters regarding counselling for jobs and courses, so they are concerned with skills that can be used to up your resume or make a job change. - massage, therapy, computers, languages etc But they also offer courses in drama, food, wine tasting and jewellery design. I'm a big fan of City Lit. They take education really seriously with a ridiculously broad range of courses on offer and top-notch, motivated teachers. The staff are super friendly and helpful and you can pay for your course in installments if stuff's not ideal financially. The main building is modern and bright and the cafe serves pretty decent food and drinks at very reasonable prices. There's a good library and they also provide a careers service! They also seem to really try to be all-inclusive in terms of encouraging people from all sectors of society to get into the classroom. I warn you, if you look at the programme of really interesting courses you will kind of want to quit your job and start at least five courses right now! I like naked people. I like them even more when they stand still for 3 hours and let me draw them. It's some of the best fun you can have without your clothes on... So I've heard. Late 2010 I decided that I should get back into "art". After studying at LCF for a year I surprise myself at how uncreative I can be during my down time, so I search the internets and found a life drawing class. Life drawing is pricey, and normally for an hour or so you can pay upwards of a tenner so when I saw an four full day drawing class for £149 I booked it straight away. So for the past three Sundays I have been cycling down to Covent Garden to take part in these classes. I have sat in many life drawing classes and this one is pretty good in comparison, our teacher Gill, is a little hippy dippy and enjoys and hour of meditation at the beginning of the class but after that we get right to it. It's all about enjoying myself rather than learning anything new for me. So I generally leave covered in charcoal with a big smile on my face. The whole centre is fabulous, with loads of facilities and teachers who seem to give a shit about what they are doing. The only down side is the price. I still think £149 is a large amount of month to dish over, and after this class I probably won't be enrolling in another any time soon. The other problem is the canteen, just don't do it... just don't. read more

I'm a strong believer in my own creativity. Deep down ... oh so deep down ... I'm the new yet undiscovered Barbara Hepworth of the art world. I'm sure of it! So to find my fortune and my talent I'm trying my hands on different art mediums. This place is perfect for trying new stuff. This school has a wide range of course to offer, which range from Computer courses over languages to music and art. One can choose between weekday, evening or weekend courses and prices range from low price introduction course to 10 weeks full classes. I'm not mentioning the price itself as its all depending on the materials that need to be provided by the school. currently I'm doing a jewellery course and yes, its proper metal jewellery so i'm playing with fire. Yeah baby yeah! They provide all the basic materials and the necessary machinery and all you need to make your own ring or earrings or chastity belt ... if you so desire. The course I joined was meant for beginners, but most of the people had done a bit of jewellery before and just wanted to have the support of the teacher when necessary. It made for a nice atmosphere, as the teacher had enough time to explain stuff to the absolute beginners. read more

I am learning British Sign Language at City Lit (Level 2 at the moment) and I enjoy every lesson. We were well prepared for the exams. All of the teachers we had so far were brilliant. The venue is very nice. There is a cafe on the ground floor. Everything is bright and clean. I highly recommend City Lit! I'm really really enjoying my drawing classes here. i started a couple of weeks ago and I'm having a great time, throwing charcoal about and generally making a mess. Sometimes I even draw stuff on paper instead of all over me. The place is huge, it took me two days to decide the course I wanted to do. There's so much to choose from. There's day courses and you can do weekend seminars and stuff too. My course is ten weeks, the lessons are three hours long and it was £164. That's pretty cheap! There's only 10 people in my class and we've got a huge airy art studio with easels and stuff. I want to buy an easel now. Maybe I'll even upload some of my drawings soon. I'm reserving my fifth star until I've done a few more classes, but it's brilliant. If you're thinking of doing some evening classes, this is the first place you should look. read more

I really enjoyed my ceramics course (2 weekends in summer). It was sensibly priced, beginners and intermediates worked alongside each other and the course tutor was really patient, helpful and full of great ideas. It was a lovely, friendly (and small) group so lots of individual attention and I'd definitely go again. Problems arose with actually collecting the fired and glazed tiles. I'd originally been told they wouldn't be ready until August, but when August came around their switchboard said no courses were running, therefore impossible to retrieve my stuff. Since there was a ceramics course beginning yesterday, I arranged to collect the tiles then, but the two receptionists seemed reluctant to allow me access and one of them (a man in his fifties reading a newspaper) was extremely rude and refused even to confirm which floor I should visit. I appreciate jobs need to be made accessible to people of all backgrounds and education, but please City Lit... not on your reception desk. read more

I've been going to city Lit for a few years now and can thorough;y recommend it. The college is modern and bright and there are a huge range of courses to choose from. I did a couple of terms of a silver jewellery course here and also about three years worth of dance classes (ballet, tap, musical dance workout and intro to latin dancing). I'm still going back to the weekly ballet classes (12 weeks for £64 - bargain!) after three years so they must be good! The quality of teaching is excellent from my experience. Class sizes are never too big so you get plenty of help if you need it. I've recommended it to a couple of friends who have done languages and drama courses and they have been going back again time after time. I've not tried any of the day or week long courses but I'm very tempted as there's so much choice. My only grumble is that a lot of the courses only run during the day and anyone working full time misses out on quite a lot of the classes,. Still, there is plenty going on in the evening too! read more

I am a recent arrival to adult learning and in searching for obscure language courses came across City Lit and their very diverse prospectus. I had visions of classes in a cold school room after hours but the course I attended us in the very professional Fashion Retail Academy off Tottenham Court Road. Great course in a very difficult language! Has been a very positive learning (getting back to learning) experience for me. Broad range of students, young and not so young which gives a great balance to classes. I would not hesitate to take the next course when I have the opportunity. read more

Having completed my first term of french here, i recommend the excellent quality of teaching. I have studied many courses there, including a year's drama course and singing. It's music and drama departments deserve a speial mention as the professionalism deserves top marks. The school has a fantastic choice of study. The teachers are fantastic. Courses are offered throughout the year. The website is easy to find your way around and gives a good description of each course. The building is clean and modern. City Lit is an extremely well run adult education college with a huge range of courses. I've done one art history course here and found the teacher to be excellent and knowledgeable. The course was well paced and structured for those at beginners or intermediate level many of whom are likely to work full time as well. I knew nothing about art history before I started this course but am now able to identify paintings from different eras and get more enjoyment from looking at art, sculptures and architecture. Located in central Covent Garden the college was easy to get to and from. My course was £91 for 10 weeks. read more

A warning about City Lit Creative Writing Courses. I did a Playwriting one last term and it wasn't a positive experience. The course content was uninspiring and I learnt nothing. The "workshop" sessions were poorly managed and criticism was far from constructive. Comments ranged from unhelpful to extremely negative. The atmosphere was unsupportive. I've tried to complain but the response from the Creative Writing Department has been derisory. So--be warned--there are cheaper ways of developing a thicker skin! read more

City lit drama courses are not considered professional by the industry. I have since met theatre directors who will not audition city lit trained actors. The drama department is shambolic. I had a complaint about a teacher who is a (well-known) bully and took my complaint to the Head of Department- they did not listen to my complaint, I had recorded each incident- or care that this was an ongoing problem, but instead they attacked me and accused me of being the problem. They refused to refund me for the course (over £1000 for the year) when I said I could not continue with this teacher, they also refused to let me transfer to a different course. I took the complaint to the Head of Quality who did not engage, and received a vicious, overly emotional response from the overall Head of Drama who had never met me, accusing me of being disruptive. If they believed I was disruptive or difficult why didn't they refund me to get rid of me? I am amazed that they are still in business! read more

I really had a good time at this acting course. I attended it because I wanted to give a go at acting for fun and at the same time learn technique to get more confidence for my work life presentations. The teacher was very professional and her feedback constructive. The class structure is good enabling to understand the skills a well rounded actor has I suppose. The class is good fun and challenging at the same time. I really liked the improvisation which put me out of my comfort zone. The group was good fun and we meet outside the drama class which is an added bonus I didn't think off initially. Last December, I registered for a sculpting course on my partner's behalf as his Christmas present. The course was supposed to take place in March. He was very much looking forward to it. Two days before the course was due to start, I received a call from City Lit telling me that the course was cancelled because it was under-subscribed. I asked if I could transfer my funds to another course. They told me I had to wait for my refund to be processed and then sign up for another course. My refund came through a week later, but my partner was very disappointed. There was also nothing similar available. City Lit, I'm NOT impressed! read more

City Lit might be ok if you don't mind being insulted by tutors who believe you are there because you are a substandard human being. It is very likely as it was for me, that you will be spoken to like a child, told off for being late, ridiculed if you ask a question etc. The truth is that the tutors themselves would not be teaching there if they were successful themselves, they need the ego boost of feeling superior to someone; if you take a City Lit course that will be you! read more

I attended a one-day course in Gestalt Counselling and I thought it was excellent. The teacher was smart, positive and really knew what she was doing. She stuck to the programme completely and made everyone feel welcome. The course was quite intense, there was constant group work and self-evaluation. Overall, very pleased. read more

I took the Copywriting course with teacher Doug Jenner. From the first class he was already spliting and making differences between "the good" students and " the bad" students, saying who's work was great and who's work wasn't. Anyone with basic pedagogical knowledge and skills knows you should not create difference among students in order to avoid disencouraging them. We wasted the whole class time with "acting fun escenarios" in groups, having a laugh and creating ridiculous situations for us to act and have fun with instead of actually learning practical, technical and professional information (it was like being in a Theater or Comedy class). The teacher also didn't upload online the info seen in class as he said he would do from day one so students could not access the info afterwards (the course site was empty all the time), he didn't anser emails when you wrote to him, he made derogatory and sarcastic comments to students, the course was not systematic nor methodical and so he was teaching random lessons, even moving to the next lesson without even explaining the concepts mentioned before. Terrible teacher. The course was a waste of money. read more
