Bought an Akubra hat here due to the rather blindingly strong sun in Melbourne. I'm not really into hats at all but this one really gets lots of positive attention from the girls who seem to think I am a country boy. The hat works well but that's not really why were are here, lets talk about the store.
This store has hats. That's what they do. If you need a hat, they have it. They've got hats and more hats and every size and shape and colour, skewed towards your more country style Akubra hat (they have other brands yeah) rather than say the uber-Fitzroy hat hatness you might get at that hat store in Fitzroy.
On the plus side, this store really knows its hats and has been there for generations I guess and is definitely a shop to check out if you need a hat. I can't say I would actually take anyone there for fear they might get an allergic reaction to the rather stuck up staff and somewhat attentive but professionally bored leaning on the counter I can't be really bothered service. It's one of those stores where the staff cant really be bothered to move around much and frankly its INTIMIDATING and not a very good advertisement for the friendliness of Melbourne.
I do recall there were hat orders on the shelves.. I guess people order their hats and come down to the big smoke to pick them up.
I found the staff to be arrogant and almost rude. If I or my friend who has helping me shop asked a perfectly reasonable question, the staff would answer it and then sort of look at you like you are a moron cluttering up their stuck up hat shop. Having said that, the guy looked at me and told me my hat size so he definitely has that black art skill of magically figuring out a hat size which I dare say is probably a dying art. Well that art is going to die some more if the staff don't smile a bit more and try to BE NICE TO THE CUSTOMER who after all IS PAYING THEM A LIVING AND HELPING THEM PAY THE RENT. read more
