I am a long-time Citizen Bank customer, but... In recent years, Citizen Bank has seen a decline in customer service. Many branches in locations convenient for customers have been closed. This bank's branches are staffed by foreigners who often speak only a little English. Worst of all, even branch managers are hired with poor English skills and limited technical knowledge. If they are also rude and treat customers like idiots (as was the case at Citizen Bank, 5 W.Germantown Pike, East Norriton, PA19401), it is best to close your account and find another bank. I've had very disappointing experiences at CITIZENS Bank. Over a short period of time I dealt with multiple employees, and unfortunately, the constant staff changes led to repeated mistakes and inconsistent information. What concerns me most is the lack of care shown towards customers money. Had I not carefully reviewed their documents and caught errors myself, I would've been out thousands of dollars. Rebecca LaChapelle and the underwriting team of Citizens Bank are the most incompetent group of financial (I can't call them professionals) folks I have ever come across. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME DOING ANY LOANS ETC with them! They send these flyers out to people with the offer of HELOCS and second mortgages. These people will promise you the world 200K, 150K, 50k, run your credit, do appraisals, get your paystubs and then start gradually diminishing the amount they initially lead you to believe you qualify for, then they will change the terms on you. They wanted me to pay off my son's student loans in which I co-signed AND IN WHICH HE IS STILL IN SCHOOL, despite a great salary, 2 properties with plenty of equity, and a decent credit score around 700. All to disappear - didn't hear from anyone REBECCA LACHAPELLE (loan officer is an idiot) for over a week. I reached out to her (not the other way around) and she calls back and says oh we can't do the loan. Something they should have an idea of once they pull credit to debts, once they have your pay stubs should have an idea instead of continuously asking for items all while decreasing. While you wait patiently AND they send you a fake notification with Conditional APPROVAL....so you are being MISLED that you are on your way as long as you supply specific documentation. Insanity! Incompetence, lack of professionalism. One mistake I made is to not check the reviews. Unfortunately, others will make the same mistake. For those that do not... Don't fall into their trap. The bank would give you a slightly better interest rate and you must put in $25000 new money for a short term CD, like six or ten month, but if you don't renew when it's mature, the CD will be auto renewed and the interest rate could drop to 0.1%. That just happened to me. The original interest rate was more than 5%, after auto renew, it is 0.1%. they do not notify you before the CD is mature or after renew. They want you to forget it so they don't need to pay interest. I feel that they are taking advantage of young and elderly people, who tend to either neglect or forget to renew their CDs. read more

I just spent an hour on the phone with five different people at Citizens. I had a mortgage with Investors Bank for over 17 years. Citizens bought Investors and the service level is now in the gutter. It took an hour to create an online account. (I couldn't create it on the website because the system couldn't verify my information.) The system won't let me set up electronic drafts until the January payment is due. I used to have my bank send the payment electronically. The payment could be drafted from my checking account on a Monday and Investors Bank would receive the money either the next business day or the day after that. Citizens won't accept electronic drafts from other banks. (Chase has been mailing checks for the past few payments.) The "managers" at Citizens don't understand the importance of securing personal information. Passwords can't contain any non-alphanumeric characters. You have to use "Abcd1234" not "@Bcd!234" DO NOT GET A MORTGAGE THROUGH CITIZENS!!! (I would say not to have any account with them but don't have any experience with checking or savings accounts with Citizens and I never will.) read more

Don't bank at Citizens Bank. My mom died November 5, 2024. The bank without any explanation or rationale, placed a freeze on account which caused my mother's rent check to bounce. I'm the sole Beneficiary and Executor of Estate. My name is on checks and I served as Power of Attorney with full access and authorization, prior to death. The bank stated they placed a freeze on account because someone called to report the death. Yes, someone sure did - ME. There was an online promo of a $500 bonus for new money of $10k for keeping it for 5 months. I opened an account 4/28/24. I did call 2x re the promo just to confirm sometime July, then on my account's 5th month - September -looking for the bonus where I was told to wait end of October. But it never came & when I called they said I was ineligible. This made me frustrated and furious as I spoke to at least 2 agents discussing my account, making sure it was meeting its requirements and I even looked for the bonus, but none of them corrected me that I was ineligible, no accountability from the part of the agents. I could have had better made use of this and withdrawn earlier at other banks. Couldn't even withdraw the full 10k as it's max of 2,500/day. Talk about hardships in withdrawals as compared to deposits. Sadly, this was not the first time I had a bad experience with Citizens. So, clients just beware. Not to mention that not all agents are nice- with a supposedly supervisor just coldly saying Hello without any introduction. The latest example is they declined a Zelle deposit into my business checking account. When I spend 30 min holding for on-line banking support, a lady told me it was "a system glitch" and that I should contact the other party to try it again! I have been an HSBC checking account customer for longer than I can remember. HSBC decided to dump all of their retail checking account customers on to Citizens Bank. Citizens sent me piles of paper Citizen's swearing up and down that the transition would be "seamless." That is a TOTAL LIE. I called their 800 to activate my atm card. After several calls ~ with no HUMAN CONTACT whatsoever, I was told it was activated. I used it once and then it was declined 3 TIMES (I have enough money in my checking account). I called the the activation number again and was told the card had not been activated, and then the robot hung up. Getting a human being is IMPOSSIBLE!!! Also, every time I call, they play this gawd-awful "muzak" only interrupting it to say how important my call is. The piles of paper that they send LIE. The papers said they would take care of all direct deposits and bills that I pay on line. NOW, I have to contact all of them. The only polite people are the tellers. Management talks down to you, dismisses your concerns all while many haven't got a clue how their institution runs. On pay day I'm told Citizens rejected my direct deposit. I look in my account, the money I transferred in never arrived and the checking account was removed from my account. I chat with them and they say "we decided to end the relationship with you." No email, no communications at all that this was the case. My money transferred --- just no word about it. I ask why they "ended the relationship" and magically the chat ended. I call, same song and dance with literally no explanation of why they closed my accounts and didn't tell me. No apology for the inconvenience of wasting my time, won't tell me the check number so I know they really issued it. Just a total joke. Customer service stopped responding to me on the phone call until I hung up, but that was after the told me "I should act professionally" on the phone after they told me they couldn't give me any information or explanation about this entire situation. read more

Do not use Citizens for banking or mortgage. Have a mortgage with them on auto pay since 2015. Suddenly May 2021 we can't pay our mortgage. All payments are reversed. Payments are coming from our Citizens Checking Account, which they forced us to open with the mortgage. Concerned about staying current, we transferred over $3,500 from the Citizens Checking to the Citizens Mortgage, which was shown as removed from our checking account but was NOT credited to our Mortgage. We spent hours and hours on the phone, only to be shuttled between Banking and Mortgage departments. No one could explain or help us. Finally, they said that we changed the account number on the Checking account, which the online banking portal does not allow a consumer to do. They promised us a call back, which they did not honor. My family had over $150,000 in this bank but I have pulled it all out. My father passed away last September, and when I sent them the death certificate, they shut down access to the account. My mother is a joint owner, but do you think they gave a shit?? Hell no! And, they wouldn't even send her the 1099-INT so I could do her taxes. She is 84 years old and doesn't understand any of this. I was told that the person that was supposed to call me was with another customer and would call me back as soon as he was done. One hour later and still have not received a call. At this point I don't even want to open my account there. I was a long term customer of HSBC which has decided to sell their customer accounts to Citizens Bank effective February 2022. I looked at their banking products and decided I wanted nothing to do with Citizens Bank so I closed my HSBC accounts in November. Then two months later in January 2022, I received a "welcome package" from Citizens Bank with account numbers for three accounts they plan to open for me in February despite me having closed them in November. I called Citizens Bank and they said they can't answer any questions about these accounts they plan to open until after the sale is completed in February. WHY ARE THEY OPENING ACCOUNTS FOR ME AFTER I CLOSED MY HSBC ACCOUNTS MONTHS AGO? I went to HSBC and they say yes my accounts are closed and I should ignore the Citizens Bank welcome package. But the fact that Citizens Bank has already assigned account numbers means they are very likely to indeed open those accounts. So I have to wait a month to see if they do, and then go through the hassle of closing accounts I never opened. As far as why I don't want Citizens Bank accounts is because they require you to make at least one deposit a month to waive the monthly fees. Most banks require a small minimum balance to avoid fees, but not Citizens Bank. They require a deposit every month to waive fees. No other major bank does that. Citizens Bank pays .01% interest on savings while I get much more at another bank. There is no reason I would want to do any business with them. read more

I called Citizens because I couldn't log into my account online, turns out my account was placed "under review" with the fraud department, for a reason they couldn't not disclose over the phone due to security reasons. I have to wait for letter in the mail to detail why. Meanwhile my debit card is locked and online access to my account is shut down, but the account is still open and active, for now. But in order to get money I have to go to a branch in person. Very angry and turned off by this as a new customer. Thank goodness I have an account in another bank and only direct deposited a small portion of my paycheck to start off with in this one. If this was my only account I'd be stressed as hell because it's the Labor Day holiday weekend and the beginning of the month so I have to pay rent and other bills. Just opened the account online 2 wks ago to take advantage of the $300 sign up bonus and only two transactions have been made, opening deposit and a direct deposit that hit yesterday. Funny how this all happens right before the qualifying transaction (direct deposit) hits so I would be eligible for bonus...wondering it this was done on purpose to disqualify me so they wouldn't have to pay. The one on Boston road: the atms are always inoperable, and if you get one that works, you have to touch the screen over 10 times just in order to get your money. Their online banking website is horrible but that's not the biggest problem. I made sure I paid my bill monthly manually. All of a sudden a start getting a call from an unknown number claiming to be citizens bank. They said I owe 50 dollars fee which need to be paid. They said they only take checking accounts. Being cautious, I looked up the number and it was reported as scam call. I didnt pay anymore attention to these calls and they never leave a message. One day I notice my credit score dropped 100 points out of no where. I thought it was identity theft but I checked it was Citizens bank reporting my $50 fee as more than 30 days late. It's the only delinquency I have ever received. This fee was not there when I paid early in the month. The only notification was through a number that was marked as spam online.
