No matter how hard I try, I can't stay away from charity shops…read more Shelter shops are always well maintained, something I've noticed from trailing charity shops this past month. This one adheres to that generalisation, with clothes clearly marked and some high quality high street tops and trousers to be found in here. They seem to have a range of work trousers which always comes in handy. There was a man hard at work arranging books when me and my boyfriend visited, and it seemed they had a generous selection of fiction on offer, including some nearly new releases. So this place would be good to kit yourself out for work, but also great if you're looking for some reading material to get you through your tea break!

I've had so many rejections and sometimes it's been an endeavour to build up my confidence again. The Shaw Trust have remained such a great support thoughout the last few months and continue to be a great backing towards my employment. Everyone who I have met and worked with have just been so kind and helpful. They have even encouraged my ideas and this has led to funding for me to gain part time employment for a few months. So much better than signing on. Yay! The Shaw Trust have informed me that they will continue to keep in contact with me weekly making sure that I am ok and able to complete my hours. I love the fact that they don't abandon you once you start your job. It's such a great peace of mind to know that they will mantain their support and I can rely on them if any, which I doubt there will be, disrepancies arise. They are based on the fourth floor of the Centrum Building on Queen Street but please note that the lift, I do believe, has a mind of its own. It sometimes works and sometimes decides to go in the oppposite direction of where you want to go. I remember arriving with another couple of people on the ground floor a few times. 'Hi, to the people waiting on the ground floor, again'. Embarrassing! The reception is based on the first floor and I am always guided towards the lift. You can also be waiting on it for ages, a guy and myself one time eventually gave up. If you can I would advise taking the stairs but it doesn't half have you gasping for breath or is that just me?! Hehe! At least it's worth the journey in the end.

After seeing on Facebook that they were running low on my blood type (a good thing to keep an eye on) I thought I'd look up when they were open. Turns out you can make an appointment after work on Wednesday and Thursday. They are open until 7 these nights, which is great! No excuse for 9-5 people ;) All the members of staff were brilliant, I go there at 6.05 and had left by 6.50. It probably would have been quicker, but because it had been over two years I had to see a senior consultant. The lady giving out juice and bicutes afterwards was lovely, and really made sure you were feeling fine before letting you leave. All in all this place is a great resource, well run and spotlessly clean. It's in such a convenient location if you're in town as well. I need to make an effort to give blood more often!

South Africa was still apartheid and Nelson Mandela was still imprisoned. So any excuse to visit is welcome even if it involves giving up some of my blood. The centre is located in a beautiful building and is as you would expect spotlessly clean. All the staff here are lovely and I can imagine that if you were in the least bit nervous would be amazingly good at talking you down and getting your blood. As far as I am concerned the absolute best bit about donating blood is that you are forced to have a snack and a drink before they let you leave! Obviously with me there has never been any need to use anymore force than "tea, coffee or juice?" and I'm always going to choose a tunnocks tea cake.

Clothing rails are so large and take up so much space that any more than six customers you would find it a struggle to manoeuvre around the shop. Notes Shelter is a charity for housing and the homeless in their charity shops they mostly sell clothing and a small selection of bric a brac, beware of any board games as the ones that I've bought in the past have been incomplete, games are sealed in store and there is no way of checking if they are complete. Shelter charity do other fundraising by cold calling, visiting your home uninvited and hound you in the streets constantly to sign up to a direct debit for £12 or more per month. The woman who served me seemed reluctant to end her conversation with a visiting friend and after ringing up my purchases and taking my money immediately went back to her conversation. Sorry, my dear, but when I buy something I expect it to be put in a bag, especially if I'm buying multiple items, and when I buy breakables I expect them to be wrapped. I do not expect to have to tell you this. When I made the observation she muttered something under her breath and summoned another volunteer to wrap and bag my purchases so she could keep on chatting. I found this incredibly rude and would have told her so if I'd been able to get a word in. The lady who did help me was polite and wrapped my breakables well, but a second member of staff should not be summoned to perform such a basic task. If you serve me, if you take my money, you damn well finish the job yourself. Had the conversation been pressing I might have understood, but it is not necessary to neglect a customer to gossip about how a mutual friend's husband is having an affair and how said friend is clueless. It's certainly not nice to talk about how a child, present in the store and scratching their scalp, has lice. There is a word for such behaviour - obnoxious. Great prices, but shoddy service. I won't be going back, but if you value bargains over service it is a place to go.
