HSBC also recently instituted a rule requiring a $1,500 minimum checking account or linked accounts to avoid a $15 fee, while other banks still don't require such a checking account fee. HSBC's phone customer service is laughable, as the department you call never takes the blame for their errors and will seize on the opportunity to transfer or hang up on you. Closing my accounts took several days consisting of several phone calls since the representative at the branch lied about closing my accounts when I attempted to do it in person.
